Can the Sony PS3 be a Nintendo Wii as well?

It’s an interesting question to ask if the Sony PS3 can be a Nintendo Wii as well, while Sony would not be able to steal technology, they could do similar things and with some new software and a Wii-Remote-Like accessory, the PS3 could be a Wii.

On the 30th of May, PlayStation LifeStyle made a claim that a Wii-like PS3 controller was the subject of a secret PSU focus test. Now even if I had most of the Wii features on my Playstation 3, I still would of bought the Wii as Nintendo and their style of games are very different to the graphics and gameplay of a PS3.

Would we really want more motion control on the PS3?

Personally I do not use the SIXAXIS motion controls, I am happy with no motion at all and I leave all the moving around to the Nintendo Wii. If we do see Sony give us the option to buy another controller much like the Wii Remote, this could introduce many other games that could even be downloaded via PSN.

PlayStation LifeStyle said that the secret PSU focus test had “PS3 controllers that were motion-sensitive and required use of a “mini-tripod that stood about 12 inches high.” Mini-games, such as fencing, paintball and tennis were supposedly demonstrated. The devices were said to be incredibly responsive and accurate.”

While this is just a rumor, would you really want a Wii-like PS3 controller and how much do you currently use the motion controls?

PS3 ownes like myslef will hate a wii controller type on ps3 is just a lame confusing controller. The ps3 contollers are perfect the way they are. Wiimote is so gay geeky not fun. Sony won’t make that mistake and make crappy controller since ps3 is market as a luxury gaming system with futuristic hight tech software unlike any other.

Sony is missing the point with this. The Wii is not winning because of the wiimote. It is not winning because of the “casual” gamers. Nintendo is winning because it is catering to a huge untapped market of entry level gamers, and it isn’t treating them like stupid children. They are putting their best teams on the chore of making simple to play games that still have a lot of depth and playability. Sony is looking at Nintendo flying high, and instead of trying to figure out the mechanics of that flight, its just trying to glue feathers onto it’s existing frame.

When deciding to buy a next-gen’ console I couldn’t decide whether to buy a Wii or a PS3. I decided on a Wii as I thought it might be something innovative and fun.

When I got it home and after playing with it for an hour, It felt like the novelty of swinging my arms was wearing off fast. I thought that after a month or so, I’d be regretting my choice.

Also, the graphics and style of games seemed more suited for casual gamers. I am used to playing FPS games and games like GTA4. I enjoy a certain depth to playing games and the competitiveness of online play that seemed non-existent and throw away on the Wii. I am sure the Wii is great fun with a few mates around or at a party but as a day to day thing, swinging the Wiimote around the room on your lonesome is pretty sad.

I took the Wii back the following day and asked the shop owner if I could pay extra and swap it for a PS3. Luckily they did (probably as they were selling them buy the truck load) and it was a much better decision. The PS3 is a much more powerful machine and it can do so much more than just play games. It is also regularly updated with new goodies too and there’s some cool stuff coming on the horizon.

I think the PS3 and the Wii have a very different kind of customer altogether because of their differences. Some absolutely love it for the Wiimote and the simple kiddy-ish graphics and that’s cool.

I think it’s great that we have a choice of such machines as a consumer. Adding a Wiimote style controller for the PS3 gives us even more choices which is great. However, I’d rather Sony improve the infrastructure of their network with games and movie downloads, than copying from the competition.

Famous quote “We are what we are. We gain nothing by copying others!”

wise up sony. i would love to have a bash at mike tyson after a hard day at work. not some mushroom head with a permanent grin. it would be great. please someone from sony read this. ignore these cynical ‘ps3 is mine’ bloggers. some motion control for grown ups would be great. the commercial possibilities would be enormous too.

It’s not the motion controls it’s the pointer!!!! Why do PS3/360 bloggers miss this? The pointer allows for a much better interface for FPS games. The motion controls are cool but they are not what really makes the Wii better.

My kids love games on the PS3 that use the SIXAXIS motion controls, any improvement to this would be fantastic and save me having to buy a Wii as well! The more people catered for the more successful the PS3 will be! I personally think the Wii has a very limited life span but anything that puts more PS3s in living rooms must be good.

Well done to Ivan for his demonstration of fanboy logic, spelling and grammar. Thankfully not all PS3 “ownes” are the same. Some of us would welcome a new “contoller” provided that the motion sensing is not forced upon games that just don’t need it or gamers that just don’t want it.

  9. anonymous_coward says:

Good point from alan BTW. The ability to point at the screen and the motion sensing are two different things.

    Yes I would like one.
