Grid on Xbox 360 & Playstation 3 Smashes Sony PS3 Exclusive Gran Turismo 5
June 2, 2008 | Filed under Gaming, Sony Playstation 3, Xbox 360

Having spent a lot of time playing Gran Turismo 5 on the Sony PS3, I am really impressed with the realistic graphics and have enjoyed the gameplay. While it’s not perfect it was still one of my favorite racing games currently. Then I met Grid that is on the Xbox 360 and Playstation 3, this game Smashes the PS3 exclusive Gran Turismo 5 Prologue in all areas.
Yes, GT5 Prologue slightly has the edge on graphics but that’s where it stops. The moment you start playing Grid your impressed by it saying your name and the racing feels like a battlefield. As a FPS gamer who loves action, GRID fits nicely with me and takes you further into the driving seat of racing than any game before it.
When your after a realistic game that not only looks good, but gives you a feel for racing and just by clipping a corner, you get what you should…major damage to your car and some really bad handling. In GT5 Prologue you can smash into a car at 200MPH and just bounce of like a ping-pong ball, if they were after racing realism, then they are well off.
You got to get the right balance of gameplay and realism in all games and this is one reason COD4 has been so popular, what many gamers are after now (including myself) are both graphics and the thrill of realistic damage. In First Person Shooter games, this is a wall blowing apart from grenades and in racing games this is a car caving in under impact and driving conditions affected from these impacts.
With the full game of Gran Turismo 5 coming in 2009, lets hope they take that extra time to give the racing fans a lot more realistic gameplay and as such a more exciting race.

Copycats beware. Grid is no GT5.
Morne
u just failed right when you said “all areas” GT5 is a gem on its own right
what a dumbass GT5 is the most realistic racing game out there. And GRID is good but, not better than GT5.
this game Smashes the PS3 exclusive Gran Turismo 5 Prologue in all areas !!!!!!!
What the hill you talking about
smash !!! big word
GT5P = Real driving
Grid = just a cars game
don’t bother your self for some words that
dosn’t mean any thing
SMASH !!!!!!!!!!!!!! HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
GRID is indeed an excellent racing game, but its not a simulation like GT5. GRID is more aimed at entertainment than realism in my opinion. This isn’t a bad thing at all and I personally prefer that to a full on simulation but many don’t. Its a subtly different market and shouldn’t really be compared to GT5 where the cars have been individually tweaked after hours of driving the real things to ensure they behave identically. There is still nothing which comes close either graphics wise or realism wise to GT5.
The business of damage is always raised when it comes to Gran Turismo. For a long time they haven’t been allowed to include damage to the cars as part of the agreements with the real car manufacturers. It seems the car companies are now coming around and can see that it won’t make their cars look inferior at all if they crumple and come apart in an accident. The full GT5 (not ‘Prologue’) may well include real damage simulation if the manufacturers all agree. We shall see.
gt5 was very bad it was gt4 with high def graphics forza is a better racing series i mean thats the 2nd out and already it is as good as gt5 forza 3 i imagine will be a fantastic game
ps
grid is a great game
Racing simulation is boring. GRID mixes everything up nicely. It cuts the crap out and adds fun in its place. This is the best racing game I’ve played in a very very long time.
GT5 prolouge isn’t the real GT game in the series. the real GT5 is coming out soon.
Arcade racer (grid) vs simulation (gt5). Why slate gt5? Its a different game. Getting a few 100ths of a second faster is rewarding in gt5 - in this it isn’t.
GT5:P vs Grid Comparison Vid
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cP1Q6sxNJoY
Comparing GT5 and Grid is like comparing apples and Oranges. There completly different and looking for different audiences. Gird is your mainstream arcade racer, like burnout, need for speed, etc etc etc. It is not realistic to driving in anyway, and is usually aimed at teenages or childish adults who like to go bumper car racing. GT5 is for people who enjoy a more realistic driving experience and racing experience, I honestly dont think PD are wanting in any way to replicate GRID, that would be the day I sell my PS3.
PS. Can all you people who like games such as GRID ect, please stay away for GT5 Online and let the real men go racing.
GT5 doesn’t do crash physics. We get it. Really.
If you like to crash into things at 200 MPH, drive off cliffs, see big explosions, etc: play Burnout or Grid or NFS or GTA.
Lol This is ‘Prolouge’ W8 for the real GT to come out then we will see the outcome.
The Gran Turismo series is the greatest and undefeated. GRID oh please stop the fanboy sh!t we all know is not better than our belove GT franchise.
This that wrote this bs article is a total idiot.
GT5 is just another driving game. All you little PS3 fanboys need to quit ! I have all the systems and GRID is freakin insane ! GT5 is boring compared to it.
GT5 Prologue is little more than an expensive demo with nice graphics, now don’t get me wrong i was a big fan of the previous games and a fan of simulation and arcade racing games with a slight preference towards simulation.
The problem for me is that while the GT games lack of damage modeling was easy to overlook on previous console’s limitations, on current gen hardware i can’t overlook such an important part of a racing simulation, infact damage modeling is far more important for a simulation than it is for an arcade type game where the goal is not to accurately recreate the sport but to simplify it for casual gamers.
I played the first 3 GT games religiously on the PS1 and PS2 but skipped GT4 and GT5 Prologue and will skip GT5 unless it addresses some issues in Prologue, the main one being damage modeling.
Grid is a good arcade/simulation hybrid, it’s not perfect and i found the drifting to be the weakest part of the game but it’s a solid racer that beats Prologue in most areas of the game and raises the stakes for Forza’s use of damage in future games.
I’m not going to get into the whole GT VS Forza fanboy debate that seems to come up every time one of these games are mentioned but as somebody with a short but fun spell at motor racing i will say that while i don’t think a console simulation will ever be able to accurately simulate every aspect of the sport.
Both GT and Forza do a good job and aside from Forza’s damage modeling which could be fleshed out further in light of Grid raising the bar, it’s pretty much down to personal choice or which console you own if you don’t have both.
first off what a bunch of bull. gt5 prolouge is so much better. so what if grid sold more copies, its nothing to brag about since gt5 prolouge is only a small fraction of the full game which will crush grid. its funny really, if grid was so good, then why aren’t car manufactures trying to get their cars in the game as badly as they do for the gran turismo series.
i played grid its like an arcade racing game it doesnt compare to gt this guys a jackass
Grid, nice as it may look, doesn’t handle ‘Realistically’; the steering at high speeds is far from being real. Grid is a racing game for people who don’t know how to race. A 2 year old could put a 360 or PS3 conroller in his/her mouth and drive perfectly in the game because it’s so lame. Seriously, Grid is fun for all of 10 seconds until you realize that you’ve wasted your money.
**Stop fanboyism; hang yourself**
To sum it up anyway…They are all driving games that bring nothing new to the table. GT5 is another Hype machine. Really ? How many hours can you sit in your house and pretend you are a real race car driver ??? Seriously , repeat that question to yourself.
The driving genre needs a complete overhaul flat out ! The genre is stale, new physics and graphics do NOT make up for the same crap over and over. The worst part is that people paid 40 bucks go get a demo and they’ll shell out another 60, or even 100 for a collectors set of a game just for extra cars, cities, colors and a graphics update.
This is the Halo 3 of racing.
If people dont enjoy GT5 because it dosent have damage then theres plenty of good alternatives out there. Just let us enjoy GT5 and you boys enjoy GRID or Forza. See Everbody’s happy.
If you look on the GT5P website you can see the planed updates for the game. In the Fall of 2008 there is a major update that is supposed to include vehicle damage.
How can anyone compare GT5:P and GRID? Wow this person who wrote the article is an idiot.
I don’t really want a review on racing games from someone who is a “FPS gamer who loves action”. If you actually took an active intrest in motorsport you’d realise just “clipping a corner” isn’t enough to do major damage at all, at best it would be panel damage and prehaps a puncture (touring cars/sports cars, not open wheel, different stort
). Grid is an arcade game vs GT which is a simulator (granted with lack of damage atm) the two arn’t even in the same boat, its like comparing COD4 with time crisis, there similar but aimed at completly different markets.
What retard wrote this review.
First of all its “you’re” not “your” (paragraph three)
Secondly have you not noticed that the cars in GT4 are all licensed from actual car manufacturers? Do you really think any car manufacturer is going to allow their lovely shiny cars get mashed up in a game? Of course not, which is why all games with car damage us imaginary look-a-like cars.
Is this the first game you ever reviewed?
@John… becarful who you can a retard when you make sweeoing statements like, “manufacturer is going to allow their lovely shiny cars get mashed up in a game? Of course not”. Have you played Fonza? or PGR?.. i think you’ll find it is you who is a total f**k wit…
GTP was ok, but got boring, but! it was a demo, but as far as online racing it was a f**king joke!, but thats the shitty PSN for you. Play Grid demo, thought it was awesome, & will probably pick it up later in the year..
Neither Forza nor GRID have the kind of manufacturer support that Polyphony Digital does w/ the GT series. Not even remotely close. Which throws their driving physics, and damage models even further out of whack with reality.

I don’t think this list even includes the DLC car packs but i can’t be bothered to check, the claims that manufacturers would not let them include damage modeling was a cop out, not only can you smash them up you can also custom paint, tune and choose rims, tyres, spoilers… funny how the manufacturers didn’t have a problem with Forza doing what they liked with their cars!
Forza 2 has 310 cars http://forzamotorsport.net/news/announcements/carlist.htm
GT5 Prologue has 71
I don’t car if GT5.2 has 10,000 cars, unless they get rid of the outdated bumper car physics and put some life back in the franchise count me out.
Huge self-indulgent car lists might make nice stats for fanboys to throw about but they don’t make a fun game and bumper cars have no place in a simulation, not in this generation anyway.
Grid is BETTER than GT5, which is nothing but a wanna-be Forza 2. He makes a great point, you just bounce like a ping pong ball when you hit a wall in GT5. LOL. THAT’s realistic.
idd, the fact that people try and claim that company’s wont allow for damage is just bull. forza is by far a better game for the damage caused to the vehicles.
I have played all the GT series inc GT5 prologue and tbh i’m disappointed by GT5 prologue. Sony need to do alot of work if they want the game to be a success.
You can list all the cars they have all you like, but it still doesn’t change the fact that PD actually utilizes the car specifics, weight, p/w ratios, hp’s etc.. In far more detail than Forza or Grid, or PGR. In turn, the lack of detail that those games have, with regards to the car models, directly relates to the inaccuracy of the damage models and handling.
Btw, GT being a series that’s been out for over a decade, means that Forza et al, are GT wanna-be’s. I don’t see Forza with 50 million franchise sales. Beyond that, buy it or don’t. Nobody really cares what you people think. GT is a 50x platinum franchise, PD knows it, Sony knows it, and they’re going to keep doing what they do far better than any other company. Make a racing game where handling and realism are their forte. Damage modeling is for the suckers who can’t drive and need something to keep their attention, when they’re losing.
Keep up the good work PD, those of us interested in a real racing experience, will buy up GT5 like hot cakes.
(Btw, Sony doesn’t develope the GT series…it’s Polyphony Digital…do some homework).
Morne
Oh yeah, one last thing.
@ Mick - Is that list supposed to impress? I think every iteration of Gran Turismo has had vastly more cars than that even if you take the average, it’s still well beyond that list. And it’s really cool to compare a Prologue version of a game, vs a full game. Cause seriously, it definitely points you out as a fanboy not interested in actual details. If you cared to mention, the full version of GT5 is going to have over 500 cars. And given each car takes about a month to model, you’re talking 41.6 years of modeling, if it’s only one person doing it (Of course, that’s not true, but you catch my meaning).
Also, neither Forza, nor Grid, nor PGR, match up to GT graphically. Take a look at the specs. None of the aforementioned contenders run @ 1080p. None of them. And well, GT5 does. So, yet another failing of these wanna-be GT games. (Grid only runs at 720p upscaled to 1080p), whereas, GT is native 1080p.
Keep trying folks!
Morne
@Mornelithe
“Is that list supposed to impress?” No, not at all, it points out that Polyphony Digital’s claims that the manufacturers don’t let them do damage modeling is B.S just like your stupid remarks like “Damage modeling is for the suckers who can’t drive and need something to keep their attention, when they’re losing”
How about ping pong handling is for losers who can’t overtake without bouncing of all the cars in the pack, hardly an accurate simulation now is it?
I’ve owned all of the GT series on the PS1 and PS2 and i’ve tried Prologue, i doubt you’ve ever even played Forza or Forza 2, the damage modeling isn’t the best it could be but it’s a step in the right direction and something GT seriously lacks.
The funny thing is you call be a fanboy when i was making one specific point that manufacturers do actually let devs do damage modeling to their cars and yet you go on to throw franchise sales, screen resolutions etc about like a proper little fanboy having a hissy fit, hypocrite much?
+1 Apples and Oranges. Here it is people:
Forza 2 > GT5 > Grid
I have really enjoyed the GT-series over the years, logging countless hours and split screen multiplayer battles with friends. Damage is of little concern, because in real racing, if you crashed at full speed, your race would end on a tow hook. Forza’s damage is realistic in that if you even damage your aero slighly, you lose the ability to turn your fastest laps. THAT is realism.
The handling, tuning, painting, and multiplayer features make Forza the best racing game in the world, period.
Stiffen the rear sway bar? Remove the understeer. Change the camber? Increase the grip. Full low and stiff suspension? Suspension damage from bottoming out over harsh bumps.
Build and paint a car… then sell copies of it on the Auction House! You have no idea how deep this game is until you visit http://www.forzamotorsport.net and check out the Tuning Marketplace and Livery forums. Seriously, check it out.
Add to that the fact that I can look at my friends list, and anyone that is in a race I can click their name and hit “join game” and get into their lobby immediately. Alternatively, I can start a game, make it private, then go down my frinds list, clicking “X” on my friends that I want to invite. This stuff happens seamlessly and is a perfect example of why XBL = FTW.
FWIW, I own both consoles. Anyone who says different does not know what they are talking about.
GRID is laughable as a sim, it is pure arcade racer, and not realistic at all. Not to mention that you are the only one that can see the extensive damage. I’ve heard people say, “I’ve knocked my doors off!” or “My wheel is totally sideways!”, but their car looks only slighly damaged to the rest of the racers in the room. Poor game, not worthy of a purchase if you own a 360. Much better arcade racers out there.

Okay, so first off, read my advise that I offer on every post I make (please read above, it’s more important that the link you provided regardless of what you think or say).
Now that you’re readying your rope, you need to realize that if you are so head-over-heel about Forza 2 maybe you should toss yourself head-over-heels-over-a-bridge. Think about it, you’re a Forza fanboy…maybe you can put that on your resume and apply at NeverGettingLaid.org where you can be the executive CEO.
“I own both consoles. Anyone who says different does not know what they are talking about”
Well, the obvious hole in your statement is the fact that you call GT-Prologue GT5 (this alone shows that you have never played as people that have never seem to get that wrong…maybe they’re fanboys like you). You also seem pretty knowledgable about Forza but on state only the following about GT-Prologue:
“I have really enjoyed the GT-series over the years, logging countless hours and split screen multiplayer battles with friends”
See, everybody who has played a racing game on any platform has probably heard that GT doesn’t have car damage, so by stating that doesn’t mean anything.
So leaving aside the fact the racing games are as much fun as reading your blantant fanboyism, nothing you’ve said hold any validity. If you’d like, I’ll pay for you to get a tattoo on your forehead that says “FORZA FANBOY”. The catch is that it HAS to be on your forehead all in capital letters and in bold writing.

@IHateYouAll
Nice try, kid.
The box says “GT5″ Prologue. The “prologue” is understood by all but the biggest idiots. Will the final release of GT5 be better than prologue, I sure hope so, physics-wise.
I said that the lack of damage of GT5 doesn’t mean anything, because IRL if you crashed your race would end on a tow hook. So any negative comments about GT5 not featuring damage are meaningless.
The beauty of Forza’s damage system is not that cars SHOW damage, but that aero is affected by running into other cars, affecting downforce and fast-lap-ability during a race. Also, if you run full speed into a wall your car will become completely incapacitated and unable to even get back to the pits in some cases. Compare that to GT’s wall-riding, etc. and you see why that system is superior. I could care less about the visual damage modeling.
To call me a fanboy is ridiculous and I’m not offended in the least. You see, something has to have truth behind it to be offensive to me. I’ll let you in on a little secret:
I was a Gran Turismo “fanboy”. I bought a Japanese PS2 simply so I could have GT3 before anyone else. I have GT2 on my PSP. I was an active member at GTPlanet for over 3 years from GT3 to GT4. I love the game and the series.
A few years ago I bought an XBox 360. I decided to wait until MGS4 and GT5, or any must-have game came out to buy the PS3. About two weeks after the Forza 2 launch, I decided to check out the forums to see what people were saying about the game.
Scoreboards that compared your times in each car an class against the world, also sortable by your friends list only, able to paint any car in the game except race sponsored vehicles, and an endless stream of tuning options sounded pretty incredible. That day, I went and bought it.
I’ve played that game every day for over a year, for multiple hours at a time. This game is the best racing game on a console, period.
Will I buy GT5 when it comes out? Probably. But I’d rather see the physics and tuning aspects of the game improved rather than damage modeling included. I would like cars to at least get slower if they make contact with something.
Your incoherent ramblings don’t really mean anything to me. However, FWIW, the definition of a fanboy is someone who can’t afford both consoles.
As far as foreheads are concerned, I just gave you a mushroom print on yours, free of charge.
“Stop fanboyism; hang yourself” in quotations no less. Loser.
@ jbreezy
My name says it all, jbristle. Bottom line, you’re a fanboy posting fanboyism. That makes everything you say meanless; much the same can be said about your life.
My offer still stands about the tattoo, I’d be more than happy to ink your forehead with your jazzy name JBristle or FORZA FANBOY.
