MSI Computer, a leading manufacturer of computer hardware products and solutions, is ready to clear up some of the questions surrounding the MSI Wind (Wi-Fi Network Device). MSI Computer will offer both Linux and Windows (XP Home Edition) based configurations, for under $500 starting in early June on msimobile.com.

The Wind weighs a mere 2.6 lbs, but offers many of the amenities customers would expect from a much larger notebook. Business travelers and students on the go will enjoy the Wind’s comfortable keyboard, which is only 20% smaller than a full size layout, and the 5+ hours of battery life the Windows based units provide. The Wind also features a 1.3M webcam, up to a 1GB of RAM, a 4-in-1 card reader, 3 USB ports, and Bluetooth capabilities with the Windows version.

“With Wind we struck the optimal balance of price, performance, and convenience” said Daniel Wang, General Manager of MSI US. “We designed the Wind to offer mobile consumers all the features of bulkier more expensive notebooks, but with a sleeker lightweight footprint and an affordable sub $500 price point.”

The Linux Novell version will feature a 1.3mp webcam, 802.11b/g, 2.5 hrs battery life, 80G / 2.5” SATA hard drive, 512MB DDR2/ 667MHz memory, 10″W (1024×600) LED display, Intel 945GMS, ICH7-M chipset and weighs 2.3 lbs.

The Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition versions sports a hevier weight of 2.6lbs, the same 1.3m webcam, 80G / 2.5” SATA hard drive, 802.11b/g, Intel 945GMS, ICH7-M chipset, a better 5.5 hrs battery life, Bluetooth, 1GB DDR2/ 667MHz memory, and a 10″W (1024×600) LED display.

  2. Why cant I just have the XP hardware with no OS?? Or is it really true that Windows is really free (of cost that is) or are they just going to trim the hardware of the Linux one thinking that this one will be for minimum budget users anyway rather than for those that might use Linux out of preference?
And I bet you won’t be able to find the linux one for love or money outside the US or some other restricted market and then HP will claim it didn’t sell so they wont offer it again or open it up world wide.

This is a bunch of crap you should have the choice of what ever OS you want on what ever hardware platform you want. If the company does not have a image available to load then they should provide the option to purchase with no OS installed. Atleast this will save me the time of having to run whipe disk as soon as I unpackage it but atleast these companies are starting to provide some types of choices when it comes to OS so it is a step in the right direction.

I will be continuing to buy barebones hardware and add all the additional parts I actually want and load the OS of my choice. While it would be nice to have the fancier case with a good name those two things do not make the computer work better or last longer. It is all about what is under the hood anyway.

This is also some what of an oxymoron if there thinking is that people purchasing the Linux model will have a smaller budget then placing Linux on the better hardware platform because of the money the consumer will save on post buy software purchases.

That is another thing that irritates me about the OEM’s why do they always include some junky trial of Microsoft works when they could provide the customer openoffice.org so they have a complete office suite with no additional cost.
