Apple iPhone black on AT&T website is just a temporary placeholder

It’s amazing how a small bit of information can lead to speculation and set the web alight, and then within hours these rumors are smothered. Earlier today the Apple Insider reported that AT&T wireless was listing another model of Apple iPhone called the “iPhone Black” and this started to spark rumors about the second-generation iPhone being encased in a black plastic shell (just as we heard a few weeks back). Now you cannot blame people for thinking this, as it was on the website of the exclusive iPhone provider in the United States.
With the 3G iPhone looking to be coming in June, this gets everyone even more excited, but sadly this so called “iPhone black” is not to be. The screenshot above shows the option on AT&T wireless, but the company have contacted Gizmodo and told them “the iPhone Black dropdown reference on the AT&T Wireless website is just a temporary placeholder”. They went on to tell the gadget site that they used this placeholder over the weekend in a scheduled catalog update. Now it would be funny to hear next month that the new 3G iPhone is really called the iPhone Black, doubtful but it would be funny and give more weight to future rumors like this.
Do you believe AT&T’s answer about the iPhone Black, or do you think this news combined with the Black iPhone rumors could prove they are only covering themselves for letting something slip?
