Hands-on: Race Driver GRID Demo on Sony PS3, Xbox 360 and PC

Hearing another racing game was getting released in around a month and the Race Driver: GRID demo had just been released, I thought we better give it a hands-on review and see if this game has something extra or is just “Another Racing Game”. Before I go into the details, lets say that Race Driver: GRID has the “X factor”, this game may not have the choice of cars and details that Gran Turismo offers, but its got a lot more gameplay than any other racing game around at present and others unique aspects that will make this game a big hit.

I am not the biggest of racing game fans, personally I am hard to please because most racing games just seem the same to me. The latest Gran Turismo is different because it has the best graphics and the full game next year will have a massive range of over 500 cars. The Race Driver: GRID demo is available to the Sony PS3, Xbox 360 and PC. Codemasters have done well with this game, first impressions show nice graphics, damage that is just right, as it will affect your cars driving abilities if you smash the car too much and can even stop the car moving completely. The rewind feature is smart, it lets you rewind if you crash and try again but this feature can be turned off in online play if the host wishes.

The GRID demo will give you a Time Trial competition, 12-player online races and a single-player GRID World events mode. My personal favorite was playing the drift mode (as in the photo above), its great fun to learn to control the monster vehicle your driving, the sounds your car makes are amazing and the affects of crashing in to things like tires flying through the air is very cool. If you’re looking for a game that looks good and has some unique gameplay, then you best get GRID next month.

    Worst review ever?

“I am not the biggest of racing game fans, personally I am hard to please because most racing games just seem the same to me. The latest Gran Turismo is different because it has the best graphics”

Gran Turismo has added nothing since GT1! It’s still just boxes going around on ‘rails’. Zero AI, the only thing they improve is the car textures every sequel.

There are many racing game out there that offer more than GT does, not as many cars maybe, but how many could you drive at once?

    Gameplay/Physics/AI > Graphics

GRID is going to piss all over GT5, when that finally gets round to being released.

People should try out DIRT, PGR3, PGR4, FORZA 2. Especially FORZA 2 if you’re into your Gran Turismo’s

Ok woah not good enough review.

And as for you Joe Dillon
Gran Turismo is THE BEST racing game in the industry its title has brought in well into the billion dollar mark. Oh yeah btw they are putting crash physics in now and it has the best physics of the racing games.

    After the rant…
However the other games like Forza and the PGR series are nice games to buy as well and GRID does look like an exciting game which I will consider renting, like I do with most games b4 I buy them.

Joe get your facts straight GT is known for its realistic physics above all else THEN graphics. Now dont get me wrong that doesn’t make it the best racing game ever just the best in those categories. Not to mention whats with the rant he clearly gave this game a favorable review did you even bother to read it? jeez even the last line would have been enough

“If you’re looking for a game that looks good and has some unique gameplay, then you best get GRID next month.”

haven’t played the demo as of yet (stupid rutgers ul/dl limit) will soon hopefully it turns out good

Im with Joe Dillon on this one.
GT for me has always been the dullest racer out there.
But i agree with asj;fhase about the shoddy review.

Listen..to all of you who obviously don’t know a thing about the difference between GT and all the rest. GT is and has always been about the cars… hence why the developer got a Motor Trend award. Car companies actually test markets with their up coming designs via GT… the Cars rule GT… they were the 1st to allow real mods based on real engine mechanics… So give it up on the comparing it to the other games… they are all trying to be what GT is and if they can make one aspect of their game better than GT they will push it on the masses but don’t get it twisted GT is the leader… Before it our only fun racing experience was nothing more than that of Need for Speed

GT cars have a realistic feel to them. The weight of the cars as they brake, accelerate and corner is spot on. I know this BECAUSE I DRIVE !!! In most of the other games mentioned, inc Grid, you can point the nose of the car right whilst turning left back and forth as though it is inflatable. I am not a child and can therefore grasp the concept that I will get better the more time I put in instead of instant rewards. GT is not a game you can rent, it is a hardcore experience !!! Grow up.

yet GT5 isn’t even out yet, and even prolouge already beats this game because their not in the same leage as GT has always been superior to codemasters games in general.

Hi, nice review. I bought almost every racing games out on PS3 and Xbox360, but GT Prologue or Forza2 just doesn’t cut it for me and yes I have been driving for 25 years.
I don’t want to flame anyone here but I fail to see where the stellar physics engine resides in GT or in Forza2 for that matter. Honestly, anyone who claims that these games have real world physics, real engine mechanics (seriously!?) must be kidding or never drove a vehicle ;-) But, I’m taking them for what they are: games… ultimately the goals of games are entertainment and fun.
If you’re having fun with the game… who cares if it’s too much this or not enough that?

    Cheers.
