65nm Jasper chipset for Xbox 360: end of RROD

If you combine the stories you hear about the Xbox 360 RROD and also my own personal experience of the so called “red ring of death”, the Xbox 360 was for me so loud you had to turn up your television sound to hear it and it would even heat up the room. We have heard for a long time that the better 65nm chips were coming out, it has been very confusing for many console owners, some even thought the new Elite Xbox 360’s had this better chip, but then after hearing Elites getting the RROD…that cannot be the case.

Today we are hearing that this August should see the release of the new 65nm Jasper chipset for Xbox 360 and if that’s the case, we could see the end of RROD once and for all. Most people will agree the 360’s drive noise, excessive heat and impression of eating games is all to real.

This is what we know so far:
Its being reported that Taiwanese companies are taking contracts for the new 65nm chips; these new chips should pump out less heat, use less wattage and be out by August 2008. The fun does not stop there, we are also hearing that Fall 2009 could see the rumored Valhalla chipset and that version is meant to combine the GPU and CPU into a new super-efficient chip.

    Just to let you know, the 360 has gone through 3 motherboards so far:

    The Xenon - launch until mid 2007 - this was the launch model motherboard. It had a 90nm processor and graphics chip. It was way too hot and sucked. This is the reason the 360 has become notorious for the RROD.

    The Zephyr - March 2007 to August 2007 - this first appeared in the Elite, and then transitioned into the other models in July. It added an HDMI port, changed the heatsink on the GPU to a better one, and added another heatsink. It’s way better than the Xenon, because it runs way cooler. I’ve had this model of the 360 since August, and I’ve had no problems.

    The Falcon - August 2007 to now - this changed the processor to 65nm, but the graphics chip is still 90nm. It runs a little cooler than the Zephyr.

    The Jasper - August 2008 to unknown - is in development and will end the RROD. It will have a 65nm graphics chip in addition to a 65nm processor.

    Basically, from the Zephyr and onwards, the 360 isn’t going to fail that easily, and is almost as reliable as Wii and PS3. With the Jasper, it will be just as reliable as the others. Don’t believe those people who talk about the 33% failure rate of the 360 because that only applies to the Xenon 360s (in other words, if you bought one before July last year).

    hey harman …
    so the xbox 360 my cousin bought and die early in 2008, was it …
    hheemmmm …
    whats your answer?

  3. Jai says:

    Your not helping Jaime

  4. Harman says:

    @jaime,

    I said that from Zephyr and onwards, there are less chances of RROD; I never said there is no chance. The Falcons are good, and the Jasper (which is what the new Xbox’s have) is likely just as reliable as PS3.

    The Box from the xenon and after was more realiable but only by a bit.My Falcon one RRODed to me after 10 months.I managed to fix it with the towel trick….and as of now i have the case completely dissasebled so it wont RROD to me again.Unti i exchange it with a new Jasper one…

    Jamie,
    Isnt it possible that the shop was just selling old srtock and you bought an old motherbord and yeah nice article he definitely said less cahnce

  7. C-Dawg says:

    Well i just came across this article and read Harman’s original comment…
    that seemed to have been the general school of thought, but for X-Mas last year i purchased an elite that was manufactured in November with the newest chipset, the Falcon chipset… and the other day, the 17th of November, it got the RROD right out of the blue as soon as i turned it on. I had no problems with it whatsoever prior to that, and i was always careful with it, dusting it at least once a month and keeping it in well vented areas away from sources of heat. And even with the new Jasper i don’t think it’ll be entirely RROD proof, because there doesn’t seem to be any rhyme or reason to the RROD’s occurrence (my friend still has his 360 originally purchased in April ‘06 and no RROD yet, and he plays a helluvalot more on it than i ever did on mine.

  8. Harman says:

    @C-Dawg,

    Yeah, the RROD tends to be unpredictable. You never know when it’ll hit you. But the main reason it happens in the first place is because of the excessive heat. It’s not so much the chips being too hot themselves, but that Microsoft didn’t put in proper cooling. In that much heat, there is so much pressure on the processors that the pins that connect the CPU and GPU to the motherboard can actually break. When they break, your 360 get the RROD. A lot of the times though, when people’s 360s freeze, they reset it and it gives them the RROD. But when they wait a while, the processors cool down and the pins actually reconnect with the motherboard. So when you turn it back on after a while, it works again! That’s why the Towel Trick worked for the above user, Axileas. The 360 was purposely overheated so the pins resoldier themselves.

    i don’t own a 360 but would like to do. but having some doubt! i hear alot about RROD in the u.s the 360 arcade cost $200 but in my country it cost $375 and that’s one month salery and it would suck if i got RROD. P.S I LIVE IN SURINAME

  10. Jasper says:

    My first one died within two weeks. My second one lasted almost a year which I believe was a falcon chipset. I just bought my third xbox 360 around september 2008 and hopefully it be my final til the next one comes out. Never had a problem with the ps3 or the Wii or with the old xbox (…wait, I changed the dvd drive on that one and it works fine ever since except in the cut scenes in some games) and I got em since they came out. Xbox 360 is cool my prefered gaming console the best graphics I’ve ever seen…shiny, and tons of games to choose from but it’s just too unreliable for me and the warranty takes up forever though I haven’t tried sending it. If this one breaks sure I’d probably buy another one then they’d be making lots money (it’s too much for gaming budget).
