Today we are hearing the results of 6 months of games console sales and its being reported by the BBC that the Sony PS3 has outsold Microsoft’s Xbox 360 in Europe for 6 months, that’s right back since October 2007. Sony said they would make the games console and Blu-ray player massive in 2008; it looks like they have done just that. The price cut in the summer of 2007 and the RROD problems have made the Sony Playstation 3 the preferred console for buyers.
In my personal group of friends and family, my Xbox 360 was given away because of over heating and RROD; my brothers got the red rings and my brother-in-law. All these people have since moved on to the Sony PS3 and they all say it was the best choice they made. In fairness, the Xbox 360 has great games, Xbox Live is amazing but its hardware has become a public joke and RROD a household name.
Sony’s David Reeves confirmed that over five million Playstation 3’s have been sold across Europe, this is an amazing achievement if you consider the Xbox 360 was released 16 months before the PS3. The Playstation brand has established itself as the major player in gaming with also having 48 million PS2’s and 12 million Sony PSP’s sold in Europe.
There are many reasons people have been buying the PS3 over the 360, and price is not one of them as the 360’s are selling at £159 and the PS3 at £299. The Blu-ray player is one major selling point that adds value to the PS3, also more status thanks to Blu-ray beating HD-DVD (the format the Xbox 360 backed).
What games console do you own and do you think the PS3 can overtake the 360 in North America?

Well here is the question. It is fine and dandy for the PS3 to outsell the 360, there is no problem with that at all. But, the people who are buying it are they buying it for a Bluray player only since it is the cheapest Bluray player you can find or are they buying it for games or Both. 360 is about Games First. Therefore these stats mean nothing if their buying it for a player only. So how do you tell. I guess we have to go back to the news that PS3 only has 3 million people online while the 360 has over 10 million last time I checked and a install base of 19 Million who bought it for gaming.

poor microsoft.
2005 they scream all over the net they have the only next generation system (even without HDMI and RROD)
2006 they scream all over the net they have the largest next gen installed base (yeah, 12 months in market with competition only launching their consoles its a big help)
2007 they scream all over the net they sell more consoles than ps3 (cause the wii surprased their sales and cannot scream largest installed base)
2008 now they cant find one thing to scream cause the xbox brand is dying (now the ps3 outsold the total installed base of the xbox no matter the ps3 is in market 14 months less)

Ps3 has 8 million people online with only 12 million consoles sold… that way better than the 10 million on xbox live with 18 million consoles sold. get ya facts straight u dumbass!!! nobody wants to pay for online service that they should be getting for free! xbox is gay!!

Having own both Xbox 360 and PS3, I must say that I purchased COD4 and GTA IV on the PS3. I was a victim of the RROD twice, and since then sold my Xbox 360. While Xbox Live has a great online experience, I think it is over hyped a bit. I can play COD4 online through the PSN network with no issues, and I hear there is a patch for GTA IV locking up for online play (I don’t have that problem). I think the Xbox 360 group has a lot to worry about, the PS3 is selling pretty well in the U.S. as well.

2008 part 2 - they scream that ps3 owners purchased the unit for blu ray only so the stats don’t matter.
Sure.

I’ve never had or been worried about RROD because the machines come with a hefty 3 year warranty. If M$ hadn’t done the right thing then it would have been more of an issue. From what I’ve read the PS brand is strong in Europe but in the US and UK there are still more 360s. I will get a PS3, when the price is right but it won’t be to play games, I’ll use it as a media extender and for the odd Blu-Ray disc I can’t live without. The games are still lacking and the dual formats still seem to have the edge on the 360. The people I know who have both consoles bought GTA IV on the 360 because of Live and achievements - the fact the graphics are sharper and the game doesn’t lock up is just a bonus.

Here is the link. Sony just said this, this week at the Sony Playstation Day in London. They said that Sony PSN Network was over 3.2 Million registered users. That is from Sony’s mouth.

When are people going to understand that its NOT ok to release a shit, unreliable console warranty or not. European people obviously have their heads screwed on properly, Americans DONT! Just because they change it for free makes no difference to me, IT SHOULDN’T BREAK IN THE FIRST PLACE! I had 2 replacements before giving up on the 360 and buying a ps3. Best thing i ever did. All my friends are now swapping xbox’s for ps3’s also.
The other thing that really annoys me is people saying 360 is a cheaper experience, NO!
40gb Ps3= £299 with game. Its wireless, upscaling dvd, blu-ray player etc,etc.
Xbox 360= £150 with 5 arcade games..but if you then want a hdd another £65 (20gb) or £130 (120gb)
Wireless internet another £55
Controller charger kit £10
Xbox live £40
Hd-dvd drive, well about £5 now! haha but they were £140.
So : £320 for 20gb kit (no hd-dvd)
: £385 for 120gb kit (no hd-dvd)
Oh and you canupgrade the ps3 to 200gb for around £50 so thats only £350 in total WITH blu-ray.
All my prices are from Amazon.co.uk who are cheaper than most!
Work it out, the 360’s a rip off. Old bad tech that ISN’T cheap, it just tricks you into thinking it. I won’t even go into things like build quality, HDMI, DVD upscaling and fan noise which the ps3 does better by far. I run my ps3 and also ran my 360 on a 40″ W series 1080p bravia and the ps3 is the perfect partner for it. Anyone with a 1080p tv who doesn’t own a ps3 is really missing out.

Why is it the PS3 owners are always on the defensive? People with 360s are happy with their machines (and games) and so are people with their PS3s (and Blu-Ray drives). A lot of people want both to get the best gaming and multi-media experiences possible, so come on guys, turn that frown upside down. Though I do have to say, the Amiga was way better than the Atari ST.
