We heard on March 6th 2008 that Sony was in talks with Microsoft about an Xbox 360 with a Blu-ray drive, then we heard on March 14th that Xbox 360 said no to Blu-ray as they wanted to focus on digital downloads. Just a couple of weeks after that we heard that Lite-On were going to develop a built-in Blu-ray Disc drive for a new model of Xbox 360, this is after Microsoft crushed the previous rumors.
Today its being reported from a Chinese newspaper called “Economic Daily News”, that Microsoft has ordered an Xbox 360 with internal Blu-ray drive from an Asustek subsidiary. The subsidiary is called “Pegatron Technology”, and they say the order has come direct from Microsoft.
When you hear many rumors like this from many sources, it tends to leave you thinking, “Something Blue is going to happen”. Microsoft did not deny the Lite-On Blu-ray rumor and they have not said no to this latest news. To add to the excitement, it’s also being said that the new Xbox 360’s with built-in Blu-ray drives could be shipping between July and September this year.
Since HD-DVD lost to Sony Blu-ray, it’s obvious that the 360 could do with some sort of Blu-ray option, internal or external. Now would 360 owners dump their current console for a new one with Blu-ray or are they happy with high definition downloads?

yup pay for the internet subscription + XBL + Movie= ???? or get a bluray disc, and i dont think xbox will get an internal drive because they have to reconfigure everything, like 2x speed and harddrive for installation, hardrive is available for xbox which is ultra expensive but are not for game installion they are only for media purposes, if they MS do come out with internal bluray drive then it will be called XBOX 360 Service Pack 2
guys guys dz is not about nice quality movies,,, its about space. They need space to make bigger games like mgs4 mmmh one thing that bothers me is,,, well i have a 360 but if it gets blue ray im gettin it again no matter what, but lot of ppl will be unable to play new games.
The 360 will not go straight into bluray games, it will be years down the line at the soonest. A lot of people seemed to expect that from their external hd-dvd.
Eventually, though, they are going to have to do something about their format. Games like GTA4 already push DVD-9’s capability, even with the best compression they could build for the game. Blu-ray ‘would’ be an answer to that, if not for all the gamers that bought their 360’s. You would have to be foolish to think they would all repurchase the system for blu-ray. Most people I know could not *afford* to repurchase the system, even if they wanted to.
Their answer will probably be multiple discs, like what was done with the PS1 towards the end.
I’d be happy with multiple disks, look what they can do with one disc. They’d prob only need one more disc and if it only has to be changed once or you could even boot from that disc when you reach that part half of the game, with some clever programming I wouldn’t see a problem.
I don’t see why Microsoft just doesn’t offer the external (bluray) option so we can ALL have BluRay. Why put it in the new consoles? People will just purchase the PS3 instead, because people will not rebuy the 360’s just for BluRay. So do exactly like they did with the HD-DVD and offer it externally (via USB) so you can take care of the entire market instead of select few.
The download idea is OK, but the download sizes would be huge, and if you’re like me, I would have to upgrade my 360 HDD (I have the 20gb). This is just some cheap way for Microsoft to nickel and dime the people who stayed loyal, when you could just offer the external bluray player and start working on the next console already.
Well… Really All I ever saw in the PS3 was an expensive Blu-ray player. Now I see the whole Blu-Ray or DVD thing.. but wouldn’t the 360 Blu-ray player, play DVD’s as well? The blu-ray player is what the 360 needs. But it should have both internal and external. So it wouldnt be so hard for the people that have older versions of the 360’s. The games would be kept in DVD format, so I don’t know what everyone is fussing about.
The problem with an external bd drive is that it will not really solve anything towards game storage capacity. It *is* possible to use an external bd drive to run games on (older consoles have used add-ons, though not overly successfully). The problem lies in the delay that will inevitably be caused by it not being internal.
This is why I do not foresee this happening in the near future.
