Hyundai Sonata Recall of 393,714 Sedans: issue with air bag system

By: Daniel Chubb | April 16, 2008 | 16 Comments

Today we are hearing that there has been a Hyundai Sonata recall of 393,714 sedans, the reason given was because of an issue with the air bag system and this issue is more to-do with complaints as the isn’t defective per se. The company has had customers complain about how the advanced air bag system in the Hyundai Sonata works, some small adults have sat in the front passenger seat and the system is shutting off.

These advanced air bag systems are meant to shut off when small children sit in the front seat as it’s said the force of an airbag deploying can do more harm than the airbag not being deployed. The Sonata recall will start in May and dealers will check over the air bag system and make the changes needed, if you need more information you can phone Hyundai on 800-633-5151.

Its good to see Hyundai taking the safety of consumers seriously, this is a company that has made a big investment in North America that totals more than $1 billion. The new model of Sonata is now being built in one of the most advanced auto assembly plants in North America.

I HAVE A 2006 HYUNDAI SONATA, 4CY. I HAVE HAD A DASH BOARD REPLACED BECAUSE IT CRACKED AROUND THE RIGHT AIRBAG. NOW I HAVE BEEN WAITING FOR ANOTHER DASHBOARD BECAUSE OF THE SAME REASON. I HAVE BEEN WAITING SINCE MARCH 18. I WAS TOLD BY THE DEALER THAT IT WAS THE WAY THAT THE DASHBOARD WAS BUILT. I DID HOWEVER NOTICED THAT IT CRACKED WHEN I TURNED ON THE HEATER DURING WINTER. HOW MANY MORE TIME WILL THE DASHBOARD HAVE TO BE REPLACED BECAUSE OF THE SAME PROBLEM. OF COURSE, THERE IS A WHOLE BUNCH OF OTHER PROBLEMS WITH THE CAR. YES, ONE PROBLEM IS HAVING DO TO WITH THE AIRBAG RECALL BECAUSE I HAD NOTICED IT BUT THOUGHT NOTHING OF IT.

I took my 2006 Sonata to a so call authorized Hyundai dealer because my airbag light is currently on. I was told that they would not be able to repair the problem because they would have to call Hyundai for instructions on how to repair this problem and the repair could not be made on the weekend since Hyundai is closed on Saturdays. I was told by Hyundai this was the nearest authorized dealership to me.
You would think an authorized dealer would know how to repair this with out having to call Hyundai.
I’m starting to feel I should have made another choice when I purchased this car less than two months ago. I am just waiting for Monday morning to arrive so I can telephone Hyundai 800 number to tell them about their so call authorized Hyundai Service Dealership.

i have trouble with the passenger side air bag in my 2007 sonata, i got the recall notice in the mail, i did bring the call to the dealer ship for repair, the problem is still there they can`t seem to fix it the light reminds on with my small adult sitting in it, they tell me it`s out of there hands, i called the customers service dept, they are no help. i called a lawyer about the lemon law, i will go all the way on this safety issue, you can have a million air bags in the car, if they don`t work then why have them i will sue them if someone in my family gets hurt i don`t even want the car any more

Hyundai doesn't care about the safety of their customers. Been dealing with this same airbag problem in my Hyundai 2008 Accent since I bought the car. Passenger side air bag light comes on intermittently whenever it wants- they replaced the bottom seat after a year of my complaining – it didnt fix the problem – now they keep telling me to prove it still isn't working correctly – I have many times, funny, they lose all pictures they took, they don't file the service report & they tell me they have to talk to Hyundai & they never call back -

Cont.. Yes, called Hyundai's customer service – they are Worthless – they keep telling me it is working as designed. Nice to know Hyundai designed an airbag system that shuts off anytime – and it doesn't matter how much you weigh – I am over 150 & the light stays on. I have warranty still & what good is it when they refuse to try to fix it, dealer says nothing they can do; Hyundai says working as designed. I have NEVER been so disappointed in a company . Hyundai is covering up a HUGE airbag problem it isn't just with their Azera, Santa Fe & Sonata – Accent has the problems too. Time to bust this issue Wide Open – people shouldn't have to die because big excs want to hide a safety issue to save money!

The cracking around the air bag on passenger side is necessary evil, other wise bag itself will not exit module via the dash flap to cushion you..

What you are seeing is the needed pre-cuts to the vinyl covering so the expansion of the bag will easily break those joints you see between the cuts (as you call them cracks) and cushion the occupant. Dont believe me, have a frontal impact hard enough to deploy the bag, the remnannts will be the bag sticking out the dash with the flap of dash blowed out at them cuts. There is no defect with the bag, If the cuts were not there, the bag would use all its force/time trying to get out of dash.

Have a 2007 Sonata and was just in an accident. I was hit broadside into the drivers side door as well as drivers side passenger door. The car is totaled and NO airbag deployed. I never got a re-call notice of any kind and I will pursue this.

I have the same problem with 2 2006 Sonatas. The dealer said they fixed one and it was still in warranty. Light came back on. The othe has 103k and Hyundai said it will be $1500 just in parts. Called Hyundai, they opened a case and closed it…Said there is nothing they can do. I told them I would pay for it but the dealer does not want to fix it. So we have two sonatas with the same problem…no fixes.

I have the same problem with my 2006 Hyundai Sonata. A crack appeared around the right hand side of the airbag. Also, the sensor light keeps appearing constatnly on the dash showing the airbag problem.. I am also having problems with the sensor light from the passanger seat indicating someone is sitting there when they are not. Hyundai does not want to fix anything. Hyundai keeps telling me that none of the safety devices are covered under the warranty.

Today 15 Jan 11, took my 2002 in to have Airbag Light service and other stuff. I was going to buy a 2011 Sonata but, after dealing with 2 major repairs which costs me over $1000 each, I'm done with Hyundai.

hi- I have a 2002 Sonata- my air bag light came on monday morning and has not shut off. on internet i found NUMEROUS complains of the same. the dealeship Brad Benson made no effort at even entertaining a fix for me; and was arrogant about on-line complaints i've found, saying the internet 'does not run his business' – i understand many people have gone thru thousands of dollars to fix this!
