The original Asus Eee PC was a great little UMPC, however many of us knew that this was just a teaser until the launch of the Asus Eee PC 900. We thought that this slighter larger model would be a huge improvement on the previous model however, I was a little shocked to learn that they would still be using the 900MHz Celeron M processor.
Although Asus have tried to make up for this by giving us two different flash storage units, the first is 4GB of flash storage that is soldered on the motherboard while the other is the 8GB SSD which will be in the PCIe slot however, this is only on the XP version of the Ultra Mobile PC, and on the Linux version that will come with a 16GB SSD.

One thing that I do not understand, why would Asus give the more simpler Linux operating system more storage, very strange. The price for the Asus Eee PC 900 UMPC will be $500 - $650, the reason for this high price tag has something to do with the Windows license fee.
So now comes the all important launch dates of this Ultra Mobile PC, well both the UK and Honk Kong should see ship dates from today with France following tomorrow. Germany, Italy and Australia will have to wait until May. As yet there is no news as to when the Asus Eee PC 900 UMPC will be released in the U.S.

let all be well and fine,
i have been waiting for this release since my hp jornada crashed and it was time to update. ultra portables are very appealing to folks like me interested in sustainability. ultimately what would be ideal would be to have a system with lots of ports, a touch screen, multi-touch pad, and (highlight this) swappable hardware. asus is already ahead of the rest with their swappable memory cards, but why not hard drives, speakers, microphones and the rest. companies could make lots of accessories, like they do for ipods. which brings me to my next point. are there going to be 8.9″ touchscreens, keyboard covers, and hard plastic cases (shells) like they have for the 7″.
lastly, its wonderful to have an operating system like linux, its constantly being updated, free, and becoming alot more user friendly (thanks also to the folks who share software and coding advice), when i found out that the asus eee (701)had a windows-based hidden feature that you just needed to type in a little code, and that i could run audio software like audacity, the drool literally dripped. open source code is the key to net neutrality, and so is linux.
why pay more for vista? which takes so much memory ! they’ll probably come up with a vista-like visual on other os soon (for a lot less memory too).
another point, is the keyboard larger, or the same size? im used to a smaller keyboard (on the jornada, pdas and starting way back with my trs-80 from tandy), and fat fingers can be more indicative of the omnivorous diets and couch potato types, or those who smash their fingers alot using heavy machinery, or woodworking, im sure a larger keyboard machine could be made for those folks (but why not just get a normal laptop?).
lastly, i was 14 when i got my first computer, and had already been computing code for about four years. pcs werent available yet, and unless you got a trs, or apple (remember a,b,c,2c,etc? how close they resemble an asus!) you logged onto a mainframe. these machines would have helped alot thirty years ago! the advantage of giving a child a asus 2g or 20g are numerless.
enjoy, and i look forward to seeing more developments!
