The Xbox 360 RROD might be old news and something Microsoft can gladly see the back of, but owners of the Sony PS3 are reporting an Error Code 80010514 that is said to be similar to RROD. Gamers in the Playstation 3 forums have been trying to find out more about the 80010514 errors, this problem has made some PS3 Blu-ray drives useless.

Some forum members have had their drives replaced for free by Sony, but for those who are out of warranty it costs $150 to fix. One reader from Maxconsole called the error “code of death”; you can see the Complaints at boardsus.playstation and community.eu.playstation.

Have you experienced this problem and has your PS3’s blu-ray drive died on you?

It’s nothing to do with the Blu-ray drive, it’s a rare error that is normally fixed by rebooting and resetting the PS3 to it’s factory default settings.

Apparently it can also be caused by faulty firmware or hacks. Indeed when you look at some of the people who get this problem they have tried to upgrade their firmware with one from a different region to their console.

I wouldn’t be surprised if half the replies are from XBox fanboy trying to drum up some anti-hype for Sony!

This is nothing like the RROD error, for a start it doesn’t affect just about everyone that’s ever owned a PS3 at least twice like the RROD seems to have done on the 360!

So true why even post this cr@p rrod my a$$.

    LOL.

what is he, part of the 3% of ps3 owners that bought a faulty system and trying to make it look like the problem is as bad or worse than the 16-33% failure rate of the 360’s?

AND HEY, I COULD TYPE IN ALL CAPS TOO SO I CAN GET EVERYONE’S ATTENTION. 1. THIS POST IS STUPID BECAUSE THE RROD IS STILL A HUGE PROBLEM AND HASN’T GONE AWAY YET. 2. THE AMOUNT OF PEOPLE THAT EVER COMPLAINED ABOUT PS3 HARDWARE VS. PEOPLE WITH GOOD HARDWARE MATCHES THE 3% FAILURE RATE VS 97% COMPATIBLE SYSTEMS. JUST BECAUSE THEY ARE ON ONE FORUM SAYING THEY HAVE A PROBLEM DOESN’T MAKE IT A GLOBAL EPIDEMIC PROBLEM LIKE HOW THE XBOX 360 RROD IS.

The Error Code 80010514 is a non-specific error. This is a general error code meaning that something unexpected has happened. It in no way means that your PS3 has a terminal Blu-Ray drive failure, or hard disk error or any of the other fictional faults that blogs and forums seem to love repeating. Just not true.

and i would also like to point out
How the F#!CK is it similar to the 360 RROD if according to you it does mess up the Blu Ray Drive?
Even if it messes up the Blu Ray Drive Player, the Ps3 still wouldnt be totally useless u could srtill do other stuff on i for example use the media server, play downloaded games, use linux if u have it, etc.
This is unlike the 360 RROd which makes the whole console useless

By the Way i dont believe this article is true and is full of shit.

s.for the last week i have occasionally been receiving an error code 80010514 when i try and play any blu-ray discs on sunday it finally decied to stop playing them all together. this includes games and movies. After this error code the console will not recognise any blu-ray disc, the console will however still read dvd’s. just what i want on my hdtv standard definition. One big plus for sony has been their customer care. I phoned Sony yesterday (6/4/08) had the phone answered by somone in the uk (big plus in my opinion) after explaining the problem i was informed that on thursday 10/04/08 there would be a replacment console delivered to my home address and could i please have my broken console ready to swap on the doorstep. they also asked me to have a try at reinstalling the system to see if that cured it (it didn’t) and if it did to let them know and they cancel the exchange. despite my console being broke it was an extremely pain free experience and the exchange took place yesterday and i was back to gaming.

No matter what anyone says, sony make good products. The ps3 is well designed, solid and reliable. Everything has a failure rate but some things (no names mentioned) have an unacceptable failure rate.

Xbox 360 RROD is old news is it? Funny - a friend of mine got one today on his 360 Elite, and I’m on my second 360 due to the same problem.

I agree this news item is full of inaccuracies. Like Pete I had my PSP swapped over in 24 hours at my front door.
Like most PS3’s mine works perfectly, even with the new 250gb hard drive (that took me all of 15 minutes to pop in
So Daniel. Give it a rest with the cheap sensationalism please.

The information presented here is highly questionable at best.

“Xbox 360 RROD is old news is it? Funny - a friend of mine got one today on his 360 Elite, and I’m on my second 360 due to the same problem.”

Again, not everyone is affescted by the rrod on the 360! If you have a newer 360 you dont need to worry (falcon) board. 3 of my friends have a 360 arcade, and 2 (including myself) have an elite, they actually put out less heat from the rear than the ps3? I know because i also have a 40g ps3. As far as consoles are conserned, the ps3 is a heck of alot better built. you can tell who the software company is, and who the hardware company is. I never worry at all about my ps3, Except for when games will be comming? mgs4=crap gta4=crap home=crap gt=crap. (my oppinion only-not trying to offend)

RROD far behind Microsoft, huh? Mine red-ringed yesterday, and my bro’s red-ringed two weeks before that. If this problem is behind Microsoft, it’s because they turned their back on it. Comparing this isolated error on PS3 consoles to the RROD is a poorly constructed joke.

“I wouldn’t be surprised if half the replies are from XBox fanboy trying to drum up some anti-hype for Sony!”

Oh but people that claims to have had multiple RROD failures are ALL genuine 360 owners right?

It’s funny how logic works when you’re a fanboy.

code 80010514 can be pareto into different failures phenomena, but tracking from within, Blu-ray player replacement is top of this for this code.

Not to worry for the present, until more data is collected.

Holy Crap how much advertisement money does Microsoft spend on your web site to write this propaganda? If you want your readers to take your blog seriously then please do not make “amature” statements. CRAP!

Jupe u really think all those games are crap :O. i think you are being a bit harsh, it might be your opinion but is is fact that GT certainly is not a ‘crap’ game in anyway. such carelessness typing is what gets arguments started^^.

Wow………..I love how these “xbots” news spread like wildfire. Hey guys, this first came out in an article on a xbox fanboy website. So this certain error………what - did you hammer your ps3 down until you got it so you can say this information. This is nothing compared to the RROD. It’s not even comparable - they’re two different things. The so called error these xbox fanboys got was a software problem which can be fixed through an update - while the RROD IS A FUCKING HARDWARE ISSUE!!!!!!!!!!! RROD occurs in pretty much 70% of xbox 360 consoles.

    April 11th, 2008 | 6:39 pmOMEN

NOT EVERY OWNER IS REPORTING THIS,ONLY 1 % OF THE PS3 OWNER ARE SO !!stfu!!

    April 11th, 2008 | 10:24 pmSW

I also believe its a firmware issue which means ANY device (including the 360) can suffer from this kind of issue. If the power is pulled during an update, or you update with the wrong software (including wrong region)

I also believe one of the guys over at AintItCool News had a similar issue, he never reported the error code but he did report that his ps3 crapped out after a firmware update.

    Mine has no issues however.
