Hands-on driving experience with the 2008 Jaguar XF

By: Peter Chubb | April 2, 2008 | 8 Comments

I would love to get the chance to test drive the 2008 Jaguar XF; however I am just a mere mortal. Well those lucky guys at Auto Blog have got there hands on this most desired vehicle to give us a hands on driving experience.

The first obstacle that Jaguar now owned by Indian motor company Tata Motors has to overcome is to try and attract a younger driver. The thing is we all know that the average age for a Jaguar driver is pretty old, and the key to the success of the XF is youth.

The problem that I think the 2008 Jaguar will face is that it does not have flashy styling that the young drivers crave today. The car just doesn’t stand out in a crowd, so I think that it will miss out on the younger driver in that way. And it is the same story with the interior, bland is a word that comes to mind. It seems as if Jaguar has shot themselves in the foot.

Bland interior? Are you kidding? I’ve had the pleasure of driving the premium luxury version of this beautiful beast and the flawless, understated, super-slick interior is waaaay out in front of any of its competitors. Maybe the photos don’t do it justice, but the the thrill of the XF is simply magic.

Wrong! This article’s got it completely wrong. Jaguar is not about the young market, and never should. If needed Tata can create another brand or use the old Rover badge, for the Y generation. Case Closed.

Why do you think that Ford got rid of Jaguar, if it was still a good brand they would have stuck with it. So now Tata Motors have a great opportunity to turn things around and the best way to do that is to bring in some new money. And the new money is the young generation.

I too have driven an XF and can say that not only is the interior the best I’ve ever experienced (try it after a BMW !)it also drives brilliantly. This guy should keep his opinions to himself until he knows what he’s talking about.. Anyone who is not sure about the XF needs to see it in the ‘flesh’, sit in it and drive it .Then give an opinion.

Whether or not Ford should have sold Jaguar and Land Rover is a separate debate from whether the XF has an appealing interior. Incidentally, let’s not forget that they are selling Jaguar AND Land Rover. Is Land Rover struggling to attract the younger target market? I suspect not. In which case, why are they selling LR? it’s nothing to do with target audience – it’s about Ford refocusing on what it does best and allowing Jag and LR to do their own thing.

Also, Peter, I totally agree with Chris and truly hope that you get to drive the XF sooner rather than later because I bet you’ll love it!

This looks like a Nissan. Jaguar, you guy’s can’t follow the crowd and expect to compete with a me-too car.

I too have driven the XF and it is way out in front of a BMW Mercedes or Audi but each brand moves with the times every 8-10 years on each model so mustn’t knock the others. The problem with Ford their engineers thought they knew better than the Jaguar engineers and insisted on the Lincoln chassis for the S-type at it’s launch that shot them in the foot until Jaguar was allowed to produce the current S-type, Love it or not it drives very well and having had two have never had one problem in 4 years!! Unfortunately I ordered my XF in september last year and am still waiting for it!!! Why?? It got damaged on the production line and they thought I would pay full price for the privilage of buying a damaged car but repaired!! So have to wait now until end of May!!

I just had the experience of driving the 2009 XFR. OMG. What a great experience it was. It was one of the smoothest rides I have ever had in addition the car was one of the most powerful I personally have ever driven. I too am a mere mortal but that was just an awsome experience.
