Sony PS3 & Xbox 360 Users: Play games online or offline more?

By: Daniel Chubb | March 27, 2008 | 35 Comments

Play games online of offline

In the last 4 weeks I have never once played a game offline, 99% of my time has been playing COD4 online as its been great working up the ranks, but this week things changed for the first time in a month.

Rainbow Six Vegas 2 is a great game in single player (while I am sure it will get lots of gaming time online and in co-op), the game is very different to COD4 as I said in the comparison post yesterday but the realistic feel and single player game has made me start to play solo once again.

Sony PS3 and Xbox 360 users, do you play games online or offline more?

This got me thinking how much other gamers play online compared to offline/single player, I guess it depends what games we are talking about but still for me to play only online for a month is something…Am I the only one?

i only played offline when i was clearing r6v,r6v2 and uncharted.
other than that its online for me
(i would be playing online more if the would only fix r6v2,damn ubisoft work faster)

  • Ivan_PSP

I play online more than offline Resistance: Fall of Man and Warhwak. I just play Resistance offline for like 4 hours every day for fun. Online games are more fun…

  • Vince

Xbox360: I play online more as it’s more fun to play with mates. I get bored on my own

  • Seth

I own a xbox 360 and a PS3 and I spend 99% of my time playing offline. I like a well crafted single player game. To me the experience of something like Half Life is waaaay more satisfying than online shooters. I think it depends what you value or enjoy. For me, it’s all about how the action and story elements mingle to create a more powerful experience.

  • Slayerking131 (psn)

I own a ps3, and I mostly play online. In fact I only bought a ps3 because the online play was cheaper. I needed it to have built in wi-fi, and I didn’t feel like dishing out 100$ out for the 360′s adapter.

So anyways, I play mostly online. I usually like to finish the campaign on games before i play online. But for the past couple of months, I’ve been playing online COD4. I’m trying to finish Vegas 2, beeen when i finish that, I’ll go back to hardcore COD4 online.

  • tgrass21

I have both and play online around 80% of the time. 360 gets almost all of the online use because I’ve built a base of friends on Live over the past 4 or 5 years. 10% goes to downloading demos, movies, tv shows , game videos and old arcade games. The last 10% would be for non-multiplayer games like Devil May Cry ( awsome game ).

Once MGS4 comes out I’m sure my PS3 will get alot more attention.

  • Gfunk425

Man Im in the same boat. COD4 online (PS3) has owned me for months. I cant even put another game in and Ive never gone back to the single player off-line since first getting ghetto stomped online. Uncharted was the online game recently that I played through without online. Even with Resistance I preferred the online play. I think more and more gaming and console gamers will move to online for the simple fact that game play is going to be different every single time you play whereas with single player you rely on the AI being “smart” enough to shake things up a bit but AI is always too easy to work around once you find the glitch. With online (especially FPS) you get different intelligence behind the controls every time which allows you to get better as you are forced to change your tactics and really dive into the game play. In a shooter you might have to be slow and deliberate against some and others you might have to be fast and aggressive. I think the game devs have to be really happy with this because it allows people the opportunity to really flesh the game out and enjoy all aspects of game play instead of staying trapped in one mode of play.

  • OMEN

i play offline when i play uncharted, oblivion or racket&lank, but i play onlive more than offline with COD4,warhawk,resistance.
EPIC need to fix the restarting issue on UT3 for PS3,i want to play hat game but they never fix it cuz epic likes to lick M$ ass.

  • OMEN

    Seth
i bet u dont have an fast internet connection,u dont know what your missing.

  • synz

I think most people play online more. Once you beat the campaign mode in a game, thats it. You can go back and unlock intel, achievements, ect. But many times, its just for the sake of having those things and nothing more. I only buy games with Online AND Offline(sorry Warhawk) or many hours of campaign gameplay and/or free-roam(Assassin’s Creed). I just want to make sure that I get a good deal for my $60.

However, GTA 4 will have online. I will spend most my time offline, maybe two months to beat the story missions at a normal pace(apparently 100 hours said by Rockstar).

  • Seth

Actually I do have a fiber internet connection that I use with my AppleTV and it streams pretty freaking fast. HD movies are great on it. I also use it for bittorrent, skype and as a web server. Speed is not the problem. I just don’t like online games all that much. To me, a good single player experience is far superior.

  • Soilder Boy

PS3 LICKS BALLS. XBOX 360 OWNS!!!

  • tgrass21

There are a number of reasons for slow down when you play games. Playing games takes a ton of bandwidth so it could be a number of things. It could be your router, NAT selection or even just having your computer online when you try to play a game. If you have cable internet then it could be the neighborhood your in since everyone on your street shares the conneection ( if you have cable ). There are alot of stupid things that can be a problem.

  • Jaydee

PS3 or 360. New games are single player offline until I flip them on Normal and/or Hard difficultly settings, then I’m online with the game and rarely play offline after that.

  • Kyle

I have all three systems and i play about 50% of the time online, i always use the 360 online, Live beats PSN hands down as long as you don’t mind paying a small fee. The Wii gets some action when i have some mates round and the Ps3 has been mostly used to play Blu-ray rentals since i finished Resistence and Drakes but should get some use when Final Fantasy is released.

  • doug

    i have the 360 and ps3. i play online with the 360
at min 2 hours a day. i only have ut3 for the ps3 and very rarly see any one with mics. so i dont bother playing the ps3 much. i gues i will have to
wait till later this year when a another good game comes out. and try it again

  • Billy

Online all the time, thats why I got a 360! You get what you pay for, and Xbox live is the best online setup you can play on. There is no such thing as a free lunch. “cough” sony

  • DJ DaveLee

really, tell me how much more are you getting from M$ that Sony isn’t providing. Their’s nothin wrong with the PSN. What are you really paying 50-60$ a year for the rest of yo life anyway, tell me forreal tell me. Last I herd home is free, and you’ll be able to do 5 times as many thing’s you can do with “Live”.

Really tell me what can you do with acheviment points. Nothing. you can’t trade yo points in for cool stuff. So whats the real point in having acheviment points.. I rather have a trophy like system that home will provide, were people from my clan can see what I been playing and what hardest level I’d completed the game on. If M$$$$$$$ came out with a xbox 720 next year you’d probaly buy it. what’s the point in even buying something like that every 3 to 4 years when you could get something reliable for the future, that would last 8 to 10 years. Hoping they want abandond the 360. I hope 720 “Live” sevice doesn’t cost you anything.

You already paying for the internet why do you have to pay for something that you are paying for already. why buy a 360 when PC games are the same thing. I’ll buy a USB xbox 360 controller for the PC if I want to play 360 games.

Hey think about it, then let me know… Why

  • OMEN

    Soilder Boy
    grow up pussy cat.

  • Kyle

    @DJ DaveLee

Stop being such a fanboy, if PSN is good enough for you then good, enjoy it but i have all three systems and you can’t tell me that PSN is anywhere near as good as Live.

“Really tell me what can you do with acheviment points. Nothing.”

Then you complain about achievement points (check your spelling) but go on to say how good the trophy system will be! can you spend a trophy icon on “cool stuff”?.

You can’t play Virtua Fighter, Virtua Tennis and some other games on PSN because Sony are leaving it to the developers to run their own servers, that’s why so many games are problematic on PSN.

Both systems have their own merits that’s why i have both but PSN is not one of the PS3′s strong points unless you value a free but vastly inferior service over a small fee for a service that works.

There are enough good thing about PS3 for people to enjoy but papering over the flaws is the act of fanboyism and serves nobody.

  • DJ DaveLee

fanboy huh, call me what you want but you didn’t tell me what you are getting for 50-60$ a year. thanks for the spelling correction Ms. Tingle.

yeah I also have a wii to. but only play it for virtual console games, pretty much all the time.

I guess I a fan of nintendo & Sony Only, fuck M$. How you like them apples.

  • DJ DaveLee

you lucky they didn’t let me post, what I was about to say.

Thanks for the spelling correction Mrs. Tingles

  • DJ DaveLee

Virtua Fighter, and Virtua Tennis are Sega you dummy, plus those games wurr rushed out anyways. They didn’t have time to complete the online. Anyways I play Tekken & Hot Shot golf, yo fighter & Sports title games are so last gen, that means they sux.

If u wondering why I spelled Wurr like that, is because I’m from St. Louis dude, you need to learn a little slang boy.

  • Kyle

“Virtua Fighter, and Virtua Tennis are Sega you dummy”

No shit, that must be why i have the Sega Saturn and Sega Dreamcast versions. Because Live is a paid service MS encourage developers to make good use of the online features, if Sony had the same approach these game probably would have had online multi player features too.

I like the way you fanboys claim that any features you don’t have are “so last gen and suck” I guess that goes for rumble too, is your name Phil Harrison Junior?

Calling me “boy” might make you feel big but i’m 40 this month and i’m guessing from your comments that you’re still a kid so it just sounds dumb to me.

Yes correcting you spelling was kind of petty and anal especially since i’m not immune to bad spelling but since you brought it up, i was probably using slang before you were born and i don’t remember “acheviment” ever being slang for achievement.

I’ve been playing games and buying consoles from the Atari 2600 and ZX Spectrum to the present day, i even bought the Philips CDI and the 3DO from a car boot sale to complete my collection and many of my friends are programmers but i guess you know more about the games industry than me aye kid.

  • Jaydee

    @ Kyle

“Stop being such a fanboy, if PSN is good enough for you then good, enjoy it but I have all three systems and you can’t tell me that PSN is anywhere near as good as Live”

Follow your own advised, Kyle; stop being such a fanboy, if XBL is good enough for you then good, enjoy it. I’m not debating if it’s better or not, because I do agree with you, but that is out opinions. You can try to knock a product, but it’s not going add any validity to your statement if it’s a statement of opinion. For 40 years old I’d expect more from you.

“Because Live is a paid service MS encourage developers to make good use of the online features…”

This is almost unacceptably stupid. You’re saying because we pay for XBL, that’s why MS’s XLB game developers make use of the online features; thus, you are implying that if Sony were to start charging the PSN game developers would then put more online features in their games. Do you see how retarded that sounds? You’re saying because Sony doesn’t charge to use their PSN that that alone makes their games inferior.

I agree with you 100% that XBL does offer superior online functionality. I also agree that Sony ‘Home’ will finally give XBL a run for it’s money…literally (PSN will still be free while XLB, I’m assuming, will still cost 49.95/yr, 19.95/3 months, and 7.95/month). I’m not saying Home will be better than XBL or vise versa, but, to XBL fans and PS3 fans who are looking forward to Home, this will be good for everybody. Microsoft will be compelled to starting offing more for less, while just the existence of XBL compelled Sony to develop PSN and Home. The competitiveness of a MS and Sony has worked well for both X-Box and PS users a like so just shut the f*ck up and be happy that one doesn’t have a monopoly on the gaming market.

As for all the multi-platform console owners out there such as myself, just be happy that you have all the new gen-consoles and not just one. If bragging online to people who haven’t seen you disgusting face that closely resembles a troll who attempted to eat the Billy Goats Gruff then keep up the good work. If you’re 40 years old and hold such a deep seeded emotional attachment to you 360 and its functionality, then I understand why you’re most likely single: You left your spouse to fondle yourself to pictures of Bill Gates molesting the power cord port on the back of a 360.

  • Kyle

    @Jaydee

First of all i’m in a long term relationship and have an 11 year old son, sorry to ruin image of me being a lonely internet geek, i have no love for Bill Gates, Microsoft or Sony, they are both huge monopolistic corporations who’s aim above all else is to lighten are wallets. They are both guilty of bad practices, Microsoft with unfair monopolies and rushed hardware, and Sony with rootkit style DRM and forced proprietary formats.
I don’t really understand your comments short of being an excuse for some kind of personal attack.

“I agree with you 100% that XBL does offer superior online functionality”

You agree that Live offers a better service but then find it “unacceptably stupid” that i should think it’s down to the fact that MS pay for the servers through subscriptions and expect the game developers to make full use of it having relieved them of the burden of providing thier own servers?

I play games in my spare time because it is a form of entertainment that i enjoy, i’m not loyal to Microsoft, Sony, Nintendo, Sega, Atari or any other company who’s product i buy and i don’t understand why you’d come to the conclusion that i had a “deep seeded emotional attachment” to any particular console when i’ve stated “Both systems have their own merits”

I can only conclude that your angry comments over the fact that i prefered one particular feature of the 360 means that you yourself have a “deep seeded emotional attachment” either to Sony or to writing trashy comments.

  • Jaydee

    @ Kyle

“First of all i’m in a long term relationship and have an 11 year old son”

Thanks for clearing that up. Do you feel better?

” have no love for Bill Gates, Microsoft or Sony…”

No mention of your emotional attachment to your 360. Your omittion leads people to believe that you are in fact in Love, but that’s neather here nor there.

” they are both huge monopolistic corporations ..”

I said just be happy neither one of them has a monopoly on the gaming market. You’re 40, your wife should have tought you to listen by now old man.

“Because Live is a paid service MS encourage developers to make good use of the online features…”

I know what you were trying to say in this post, but you failed to do so…miserably. Choose your wording correctly or just shut the f*ck.

“I don’t really understand your comments short of being an excuse for some kind of personal attack”

The post was in reply to your ignorant post to DJ DaveLee. You speak all high and mighty of yourself because you’ve play Atari. Guess what, you’re not the only one. And bragging about being 40 like it make you more knowledgable, makes you just sound stupid. Age doesn’t equal knowledge…at least in your case it doesn’t.

“i’ve stated “Both systems have their own merits”

Good for you. You failed to mention any PS3 merits, not like I really care, but saying something doesn’t make it a fact. You chose one side of the arguement, which by it’s self would be fine, but then YOU started attacking DJ DaveLee so I desided that an old, wrinkled-sack, going-grey loser who has a nasty fat wife/spouse needed a good talking to by me.

“I can only conclude that your angry comments over the fact that i prefered one particular feature of the 360 means that you yourself have a “deep seeded emotional attachment” either to Sony or to writing trashy comments”

Good input, Kyle. I have come to realise that in your old age you can’t cull your mind for your own witty remarks (notice how I called my remarks witty without actually saying it? Witty huh?!)

  • Kyle

    @Jaydee

Ok now i get it, your just one of those sad bloggers who have nothing better to do than insult people into arguing with you, any attention is good attention right?

“You failed to mention any PS3 merits”

I’m not here to sing the praises of any console, i’m just responding to the topic of this thread which is about online gaming, you do know how that works right? the website writes an article and we respond with comments related to the topic!

When you’re 40 (if you make it) you’ll realise that it’s nothing to brag about and i only brought it up in response to being called “boy” by some kid with a bad mouth (now who does that remind me of?)

Maybe i wouldn’t act so “high and mighty” if you didn’t give such a good reason to look down at you with comments like “just shut the f*ck” and “wrinkled-sack, going-grey loser who has a nasty fat wife/spouse”

Please feel free to carry on with your childish schoolyard insults if it makes you feel big, i’ve waisted enough time on you already and don’t need the final word, i’ve got better things to do cya.

  • Jaydee

    @ Kyle

    Article Topic:

Sony PS3 & Xbox 360 Users: Play games online or offline more?

This topic question is do you play online or offline, not which online is superior.

    My first post:

“PS3 or 360. New games are single player offline until I flip them on Normal and/or Hard difficultly settings, then I’m online with the game and rarely play offline after that.”

    Your first post:

“I have all three systems and i play about 50% of the time online, i always use the 360 online, Live beats PSN hands down as long as you don’t mind paying a small fee. The Wii gets some action when i have some mates round and the Ps3 has been mostly used to play Blu-ray rentals since i finished Resistence and Drakes but should get some use when Final Fantasy is released.”

Notice how in my post I actually responded to only the topic? Then there’s your post, full of opinions about which online service is better. So when you say…

“I’m not here to sing the praises of any console, i’m just responding to the topic of this thread which is about online gaming…”

    …I’ll call bullsh*t on you.

Stick the the topic or, as I’ve said before, shut the f*ck up. I notice that you made a post on Friday and didn’t reply until Monday, which leads me to believe that you don’t own your own computer and that you are using a work computer. Pfff, so I’m not going to continue an agruement with a 40 year old loser who can’t afford his own computer.

Maybe it’s time for a new job, hey old man.

  • Kyle

Another late night in the office ;)

  • Jaydee

Hope they pay you OT for your hard work. =>

  • Kyle

Isn’t it past your bedtime little boy or are on the wrong side of the ocean?

  • Jaydee

Good one old man. I have a real paying job that’s affords me the luxury off buying my own computer and a BBPearl, so I can debate every word you say no matter where I am. Oh, if only you had a degree instead of an 11 year old kid, unemployed spouse and a failed marriage you would know what it’s like to be me.

Best of luck in you life, Kyle.

  • Kyle

I work for my self and own several computers but don’t feel the need to brag about it, good luck finding your own spouse/gay partner?

Don’t worry i wont tell anybody that you bat for the other side.

  • Kyle

Hey Jaydee i’ve just found your Post-Op profile!
