We reported the other day that former ITN newsreader Carol Barnes who is 63 had a massive stroke last weekend and that her life hangs in the balance.
It’s said that every year, an estimated 150,000 people in the UK have a stroke. More than 60,000 die and many of the rest are left with permanent disabilities.
Even children are having strokes but this is not as common as it is in adults.
Why do Strokes occur?
It’s said that Strokes occur when the blood and oxygen supply to the brain is cut off by a blockage or a bleed.
Lifestyle factors play a big part in raising risk of having a stroke these days.
Here are ten ways to help avoid a stroke:
1. STOP SMOKING.
2. HAVE REGULAR BLOOD PRESSURE CHECKS.
3. CONTROL HEART DISEASE
4. TACKLE STRESS AND DEPRESSION
5. EAT HEALTHILY
6. REDUCE SALT INTAKE: Salt raises blood pressure
7. WATCH YOUR WEIGHT
8. EXERCISE.
9. CUT DOWN ON BOOZE: Drinking raises blood pressure.
10. BE INFORMED: Hormones including the Pill and HRT can make the blood thicker and more likely to clot.
I know a few people who have had a stroke including my mother-in-law who has been left with not being able to use her right side which could have been down to stress.
If these steps are followed it will not stop you having a stroke but will help prevent you having one.
Having a stroke can be life changing so why not prevent this by changing your life today before it changes you
