Oh yes it is official and Sony are scared of the Asus Eee PC, Sony do fear the cheap laptop if it does well. Senior VP with Sony US’ IT products operation Mike Abary told CNET “If [Asus' Eee PC] starts to do well, we are all in trouble,”

“That’s just a race to the bottom… if mainstream buyers buy it then whoa…” His fears include letting consumers know what they can do computationally on a small and cheap machines and that they will not pay out for expensive upgrades that have the latest processors, screen technology and graphics.

Come on Sony behave there is a massive market out there and there are many ways you can move into the world of producing cheap laptops and you know it.
Consumers desire for upgrades and higher performance it is a fact, at the end of the day why blame Asus seeing as laptop prices are hitting the lower price brackets than ever before anyway. Oh yes and there is the CloudBook which is cheap as well.

The Eee PC comes in at around £220 and personally I think Sony has room for another cheap laptop for our consumers.

“Consumers desire for upgrades and higher performance it is a fact”, that is not a fact, it is opinion.

Upgrades and higher performance for what? email, internet surfing and word processing? Low end computer can watch movies and listen to musics just as well. The only thing that set high end and low end computers apart are games. But PC games are far and few nowadays.

Sony worries? I think the companies live on high end PC markets should worry: Dell, HP, Nivida, Apple, AMD, Intel and so on.

Sony isn’t exactly leading edge technology and are way behind in both quality control, and value stakes. They have a bad rep for being consumer unfreindly as well.

Right now I class Samsung as offering far better quality and Sony needs to price their wares a good 10% below them just to be considered. Asus is stepping out and creating gadgets that are well made and offer low price - Sony should spend less time crying about it - and more time getting their act together.
