Sony PS3 folding@home: Playstation 3 owners, do you use it?

Remember a few years back people were asked you join thousand of PC’s together so that complex calculations could be made; this was called Folding@Home and was to do with the study of protein folding. Well now since the launch of the Playstation 3, this study is underway once again, as the PS3 Cell processor is very powerful and is ideal for this task.

Will you be one of those Playstation 3 owners who will take part in folding@home, if you are you might be able to help in the fight of protein folding and related diseases. One such disease is Alzheimer’s; this is something that many of us have seen firsthand.

To be able to take part, all you need is PS3 system version 1.6 or above, just go into the Network section and you will see a Folding@Home in your menu, just click it, it’s that easy.

Do PS3 owners already use folding@home?

I use it all the time when I’m not using my PS3. I like checking which countries have the most yellow dots. The USA has the most always a lot of PS3 users helping, NYC my state has the most users..

  • Frazer369

This is a stupid, of coarse people use it, otherwise it would have never got into the Guinness world records.I use to use it and worked up just over 100 folds.

  • Sean Gaffney

No I don’t use it. Don’t assume everyone does.

  • http://www.myworthlesscrap.com Chris R.

Yep! Over 300 units so far!

  • Logic

1000 terraflops i believe the record was, at which point the ps3 accounted for about 820 TF, and im aware of one occasion where ps3′s alone reached 1000 TF (then games arrived).
To the best of my knowledge.

Its good to help where we can.

  • Sean Gaffney

Joshua, Very judgemental of you. Maybe I care about humanity too so save the enviroment by not burning electricity 24/7 …

  • Mornelithe

Yeah, not using it is going to change the fact that the majority of the world’s energy comes from carbon emitting sources. Way to make a stand Sean. Fight the power.

or … maybe you’re just too good or too stingy on your electric bill to possibly help out billions of people in the future

Hey guys, I’m thinking about participating in Folding@Home but I don’t understand everything. What are the effects on your PS3 powerbill etc… by using Folding. Any other need to know info would be helpful. Thanks

  • Mornelithe

Hey Matt, honestly, I don’t know because I’ve been running F@H pretty consistently since I got my PS3. So, I don’t know what the power consumption normally is. Hehe, I’m sure you can find the specs online if you look around though =)

Mornelithe, or anyone. Do know if there are any physical affects to the PS3 like any kind of long term damage to the system or does it slow down the PS3 at all? Thanks again for the help.

  • DappaDan

yeah i use mine, if any body is unsure about the team name/number feel free to use mine! Team 35947 (CustomPC, the only UK team in the top 10) and username DappaDan.

    Thanks in advance!!

  • Mornelithe

It doesn’t have any long-term affects from what I’ve noticed…she’s still chugging along 13 months after I got her, so it’s a pretty reliable machine + app in my opinion. As for slowing down the PS3…no, it wouldn’t, because Folding only runs when the machine is idle, IE, if you’re playing a game or watching a movie or surfing the net, F@H won’t kick in.

Cool thats the kind of answers I was looking for. Thanks I’ll probably start using it now.

  • Maniakos

I just found out about this today. Pretty cool. I enjoy that they give you a nice visual and audio background. So, yes, I’ll use it.
Besides, it’s the right thing to do.

I’m off to learn about protein folding…

Hey people, I made a team with the purpose of helping promote the awareness and actual use of F@H, be it on your PS3, or just the PC client. So if you want to help me show others how cool this is and why this really matters, please tell your friends about F@H and join my team, I just made it not long ago and am really looking forward to seeing some members to my newbie team. Don’t you think this project is awesome? Crunch for team#154535!

Im not sure exactly what it does or how it helps diseases. If someone could roughly explain then I would be more than happy to help.

  • Bryan

I’ve been doing it in my off hours since I got my PS3. I just processed my 600th work unit this week!

“you might be able to help in the fight of protein folding and related diseases”

Protein folding is not a disease – without it you would quite literally fall apart. Proteins are supposed to fold, and every biological process is dependent on this, but the understanding of exactly how they fold and what effect this has on interactions is what makes this useful in the study of disease.
