A new Portable Slide Panel Digital Media Player which looks great with its slim design and indeed looks like a portable gaming device, the PMP is a video player with a cool 2.8inch LCD display which can playback MP4 and 3GP files.

Not only that it also works as a MP3 & WMA player and also has an FM tuner, other features include e-book function, JPEG viewing abilities and a built in speaker.

Well now all the boring features are out of the way let me get down and dirty with the coolest feature, the coolest feature is the function that has the ability to play games with apparent NES support, GameBoy and GameBoy Color.

There are more features like digital video camera and built in microphone plus audio and video out cables so you can connect it to a TV, the new device only has 1GB of storage which is a major downside really but the price is pretty good indeed at only $59.99. Oh yes I nearly forgot, it does have memory expansion slot for extra memory.

Now come on you must admit that is a decent price considering the NES bit.

The 1GB-MP4GAME-BLK (as it is known on geeks website is cool but has 2 severe (and I do mean SEVERE!) drawbacks.

Let me first say that the unit itself is impressively solid. I paid $35 and expected a flimsy pile of crap. NOT SO! It is as well put together as any gameboy.

The camera is more than impressive with a resolution of 1280X960 and the digital video camera (with sound), likewise, was far better than I expected. Of course, like most cheap cameras, they’ll get motion blur if you shake the least bit. All in all, far better than any phone camera I’ve ever used.

Movie playback is excellent and the headphone output sounds great. The built-in speaker is plenty loud enough to use as well.

The FM radio is okay although slightly difficult to use, eg. takes a month and a day to manually tune to a station and there appears to be no way to save your favorites.

There is a dictionary built in but for the life of me I cannot get it to display the definitions of words in anything but Japanese. I know… who cares about a dictionary? A few of us actually DO ;)

The NES emulator is FLAWLESS! It has played everything I have thrown at it without so much as a hiccup. It does truly play any nes, gb or gbc rom (disclaimer: not advocating piracy… bla bla bla.)

Now for the really bad. Unfortunately, both relate to the emulator which was the sole reason I purchased this.

First is the volume control… or lack thereof. You can’t adjust the volume while playing games! It is either full blast or muted no matter if you use headphones or speaker. That is a MAJOR annoyance.

Second, and this is a deal breaker for me, the controls just plain suck. If I had the hands of a three year old I might be able to use them. My thumb covers all four directional buttons and I don’t have very large hands! They are also absurdly hard to press so that three year old had better hit the gym. At least a 4 way rocker on the directional would have made more sense than this torture device they came up with.

All in all, if you want to impress your geek friends, this is a fun gadget to do it with. As far as a gaming unit, IMO, it is next to useless.

I have had this unit for over a year and to tell you the truth it has been shoved in the back of a drawer. I loaded a memory card full of music and it wont read any of it. It does respond that the card is in but that is it. The screen has amazing clarity to it and pictures are great. How do I get NES, gameboy, gameboy color games to load to it? What other uses am I not realizing?
