Impact on the Xbox 360 of Sony Blu ray winning

Xbox 360

Ok now this is interesting because not only do we know that Toshiba have finally chucked in the HD-DVD towel many seem to think that it will not have a massive impact on the Xbox 360 platform seeing as Microsoft have an interest in HD-DVD, but surely there has to be an impact seeing that the Sony Blu-ray has a winning formula.

Obviously we will all have to wait and see when the company hears from Toshiba for more information on any future plans around the Xbox 360 HD. But what will the plans include? Will it be Microsoft Points redeemable voucher for any of you that fall into the HD-DVD pit, well this all remains up in the air at the moment?

On a personal note it has to be said that Microsoft may have to go run and hide in the corner of a room and swallow their pride and come up with an Xbox 360 blu-ray player or something.

The other thing is that many people have Xbox 360 consoles that feel they may want to buy an add-on, but you have to think about it for a second like for example favoring the Sony PS3. Many of you now which we can understand may be feeling a little down in the dumps now that you have purchased an Xbox, but then we do understand that the PS3 is a little pricey for many of you still.

So what do you think the impact has on the Xbox 360 of Sony Blu ray winning?

“we do understand that the PS3 is a little pricey for many of you still.” How so? The PS3 has always been cheaper than the XBOX 360 in any comparable purchase configuration, even WITHOUT the HD-DVD add-on: HDMI, hard drive, wireless networking, online play, controller recharge kits (or an endless supply of batteries). I was an original XBOX customer who bought the 60 GB PS3 at launch because it was CHEAPER than buying the XBOX 360…that’s before all the price drops. Not only that it’s quieter, self-contained, and looks better in a home video setup, and you get the bonus of built-in Blu-Ray drive that delivers great movies and a richer gaming experience. Finally, the PS3 isn’t guaranteed to fail in the first 3 years of ownership, like the XBOX 360. Why on earth would anyone buy an XBOX 360?

agree with Phil…PS3 was always a much better value for the $ and now with Blu-ray the victor it is even more so.

This isn’t a big deal to M$ and the 3sh*tty. M$ was smart enough NOT to include HDDVD as a main component. It would have driven up the cost and really screwed them over had the format war happened the way it did.

The PS3′s price is a major deterrent because you can play mostly the same games on mostly the same graphics. The Blu-ray is a plus but not a huge difference from watching a regular upscaled dvd. Most people buy a system for games (which is why the Wii does so well).

The PS3 has probably lost the gaming war but it was instrumental in the winning the format war, which was probably better for Sony as the they will get more royalties off it. M$ was never privy to Toshiba’s HDDVD royalties so the stake in the format war didn’t matter.

I, for one, think the smart thing for Microsoft would be to acquire the “failed” HDDVD technology from Toshiba and start publishing games on it.

Look Blue ray did win.. but it has zero impact on xbox 360 owners (that did not purchase a hd player)
which i would argue is the majority of 360 owners. it has zero impact because you can still download movies in hd from xboxlive case closed

  • Shay

The impact on the Xbox 360 will be minimal! As GAMES sell consoles not movies. The Xbox Elete is quiet, has the new falcon chip (no rrod) with a 120g HD and also looks nice in a home video set up. I like to have the choice over having a blu ray drive/hddvd drive, with PlayStation you are paying extra for something you might no use, I say again…GAMES sell consoles not movies, and the Playstation 3 is lacking in that area.
To Date the Wii is beating both in sales and that has NO hddvd drive! Coming 2nd is the Xbox 360 and then trailing far behind… is the Playstation 3

Nintendo still has the lead with about 20 million sold.
The 360 is second with about 18 million sold.
The PS3 is last with about 8 million sold.

  • John

Well I bought my xbox 360 for the games, not for watching movies….besides I like the xbox exclusives better than the PS3 exclusives…..and by the way, it seems no one remembers the failure rates of the PS2 when it was launched, nevertheless it was hugely succesful console

How do you figure the PS3 is a better deal? Richer game experience? What Games? They are few and far between, plus no backwards compatibility and oh yea if your battery needs replacing on your PS3 controller, (that lacks rumble), you’ve got to send it back to Sony like the Ipod for replacement. The 360 controller has rechargeable batteries that are simple to pop in and out. The Xbox 360 gives you down loadable Movies, TV shows and tons of Games. It’s backwards compatible with nearly 400 Xbox games (which Always had better graphics than the PS2). The Xbox is a dream to program for, unlike the overly complex and complicated PS3. The latest Xbox 360 runs quiet and cooler. Let’s not forget Sony had major issues with the PS1 and the PS2 when it 1st came out. What you’ve got are Sony Fans who know nothing of the Xbox 360…

“Why on earth would anyone buy an XBOX 360?”

Because of the superior GAMES, maybe? or the superior online service, maybe? Or the fact that the Cell was supposed to be this awesome chip and as it turns out games don’t even look as good on the PS3 as on the 360? I guess if I wanted a BR player then I would get a PS3… but if I am buying a game console to play games, then the 360 is a no brainer.

was this article written by a middle schooler? whats with the typos and horrible grammar? Anyway nobody bought a 360 for the hd-dvd add on, they bought it for the games that the ps3 just can’t match. ps3s are great for a cheap blu-ray player that also happens to play a couple games, but it and the 360 are being bought by totally different markets right now. 99% of current and future 360 owners couldn’t care less about hd-dvds. I have a 360 and have never had a single malfunction phil, and have no interest in a ps3 until it releases some games that are worth anything. if your a gamer right now, its not even a comptetion: get a 360.

The Xbox 360 is first and foremost: A gaming console.

When connected to the same network as a Vista Premium PC, it is a media center extender (this was part of the reason I bought 3 of them).

As a media center extender, it is capable of delevering high definition multimedia content through a slick user interface. All this while still connected to the gaming community, ie. access to friends list, etc.

The PS3 is still light years away from this.

Forget optical discs, this is the 21st century for Gods sake!

If you are really Bill Gates, We must not forget that YOU designed the 360. You also knew that HD-DVD was coming. We all found out about more than 5 years ago. You could have put a Built in HD-DVD drive, but you wanted your little console to have DVD-DL. Sony waited a another year for the PS3, just so they could perfect the Blu-ray drive. AND IT WORKED! Plus, when Sony comes out with PlayTV, you are going to be in soooo much trouble in sales as far as your medaia claims for the 360. And dont forget Playstation Home. That’s like coming in a month or two. A Free download, free online, free free free. With the 360, buy, buy buy.

  • jordan

with the hd-dvd now out, will the xbox 360 elites drop in price?

  • jordan

if it really is bill gates who made the comment above, maybe he’ll give us ps3 fans a free 360 so we dont buy a ps3

  • Bryan

“Many of you now which we can understand may be feeling a little down in the dumps now that you have purchased an Xbox, but then we do understand that the PS3 is a little pricey for many of you still.”

    Uhmm..the xbox 360 and PS3 are the same price…hello?!

    PS3 = 399
    Xbox Elite = 450

And the PS3 has a Bluray drive! LOL. hello!

  • Bryan

If Microsoft adds a Bluray drive to the XBOX 360 or an add on Bluray, they’ll have to pay Sony for royalties…and if they don’t, people will want to play Blurays and buy a PS3 as a player anyway…LOL…I find that…funny. MS is hosed by not being forward thinkers. But seriously, look at the rest of their products…is the XBOX any different?

  • Dave

Actually Brian, Blueray uses the VC-1 Codec for video encoding, partially developed by Microsoft. So for every PS3 sold Sony pay royalties to MS.

Optical drives will be dead and buried within 5 years anyway as solid state memory advances (32gB SD card soon,64gB Oct.).
    Optical drives-use 300-400 components, 30-40 moving components (gears,rubber bands(!)etc.),easily damaged discs.

And as for games with no loading times…

    ROM cartridge anyone…..?

  • bigd

Shay. Falcon chipset Elite still has 10% failure rate. Compare that to 1% of Wii and PS3 and you’d have to be a thumbsucking moron to even contemplate taking a 10 to 1 chance on a soon to be obselete system which is about to lose support faster than Hillary Clinton. Get your head out of your deriere and swallow some of that pride, 360 has a few standout titles and may get a few more but its now coming third in a three horse race and unfortunately you bet your shirt on it.

  • black8jac

Shay, your sales numbers are far away from truth. As a ordinary xboy, you don’t see the facts.
Real numbers are: Wii: 21.5 Mln
    xbox360: 17 Mln
    PS3: 10.2 Mln

  • eddie

SONY is lining up all its ducks in a row. BLURAY has won the format war, its gonna be an explosive year for ps3 game releases, HOME is coming any day now along with in game XMB, free ONLINE PLAY, full WEB BROWSER, p.c. streaming to ps3, NETFLIX available to ps3 as well. HARD DRIVE STANDARD EQUIPMENT, no BATTERIES to buy. ITS A PERFECT STORM. there are a handful of games that i would like from the 360 but that is no reason to buy a RROD MACHINE. its gonna be a fun year for ps3 users, lol.

  • deadred

home is coming anyday now (sony delaying things??!! who would have thought!!) in game XMB (which xbox had its equivillent from day one, oh and the in game xmb has been delayed lol) no batteries to buy (unless it goes flat, in which case you need a new controller, or just plug it in with the stupidly short recharge cable).

Have fun on your Delaystation while i am busy actually playing games on my 360 that i bought on March 23rd 2006(the day it was realeased in NZ) and haven’t had any issues with, while my nephews playstation 3 has been serviced twice lol. Not that he misses it when he has to send it away, cause there is nothing to play on it anyway :)
