World of Warcraft Addiction: Blizzard officially consider mobile version of WoW

By: Daniel Chubb | February 14, 2008 | 47 Comments

World of Warcraft on mobile phones

This is good and bad news for those gamers addicted to World of Warcraft, but then it will depend if you want to quit WoW or not. Blizzard has just officially said they are considering a mobile version of the massively online multiplayer game.

Some WoW players might find this pointless as they are never out and about, but then maybe they need to get more mobile and see some sunlight, a mobile version of World of Warcraft can help achieve this.

So do you think it’s a good idea to have people staring at their mobiles while moving around like zombies?

I think this is a good diea because a player can do maintance with their character, checking auctions.. cleaning out bags from last nights questing.. etc.., during lunch. Then when they get home they are ready to start playing and earning xp or working toward completing a set of gear.

I think this is a good idea as well but the only problem might be with a smaller keyboard it might be harder to control what you are doing or for instance i you are playing on a PVP realm you might accadentaly hit a hord player if you are on the alience, or vice versa other then that it looks cool!

I think this is awful. I have in my computer about 5000 pages with reports by people who were or are addicted to this game. They ruin their health, their partneships their family life.

Just go to WoW detox and do some reading. And what many don’t know: among those who are addicted there is a high prevalence of ADHD people, old or young.

Yeah i think its the best thing that BliZZ has done yet and its good for Mobile to I have been playing Wow for some time now and i love it and now i can get out more and get some sun and play Wow at the same time lol and + lets say you have to go on a trip and dont have a laptop just take out your Mobile and play away or if you have to set and wait for someone or something and you have to get to that next lvl or get Honor I love that ideal so i think that it should be done NOW!!!!!! lol

Wow on mobile would be a awsome addition to the growing trend. One problem however, is that it might take away oppertunites. For example: playing at work or school will seriously screw up future plans you will most likely get fired from your job or worst. But for the most part world of warcraft is the best game ive ever played but leave it for leisure time and get your crap done first. In the long run, reality before fantasy

  • Carolyn

I think it’d be really hard to get into, considering everything you really need to play.. How will you be able to use your hit your actionbar orderly? It would benefit a lot of people if we were able to check things on our characters, but doing a raid or grinding honor would be terrible in my opinion.

  • miguel

WoW mobile would be a great source to all WoW players,i couldnt imagine a better idea.
and if u have problems with playing WoW on mobile, just dont play it.
in love with the game or not u have to love this idea.
if u wana pull it out in work or school and get in trouble doing it,hey, thats your problem.
    and ADHD?
    ridiculous…
know wat ur saying before u speak ur mind.
never the less this would be somthing somthing great and would expand all world of warcraft players to a new lvl of playing.
    <—-Thanks.

  • Brayner

this is probably a bad thing for people who dont have a good cellphone its probably just gonna be for the iphone and nothing else.
so its not really fair for people with other types of cell phones.

  • sam

I think it is a great.I wish they had thot of it sooner. I think it would be great to be able to play outside or where ever . Like alot of other people said it would be great to be able to check out your guy and sell or buy some stuff and be ready to lev up

  • DUDE

well i think it okay idea but i think it will be hard to play on wow on the moblie because you have to control the character and use the skill at same time when holding it in your hand, aswell i think the scream it too small to play and i think the actionbar will be too small because if the action bar is too big then it well cover the scream and if it too small it hard to hit the action bar (anyway that wat i think),

  • mike

thats bad ass but to small of a screen

  • Dan

I think this is a great idea because think about it if you are at a but stop or something and you have your cell you can play wow on your cell phone so I think it is a perfect idea!!

  • Ronnie nelson

This game my brother is hooked on he breathes eats dreams WoW sad he is 20 and don’t have a girlfriend he literally thinks he will meet a wife over the game SICK you people need to get out your computer needs a break and meet real people have a real conversation now I love games tomb raider I beat every one need for speed is sweet but a game that rules your life and cost enough a year to buy a game system is not good they rack up on you mindless fools get a life

  • lol man

I sweet but how do u get it i have been tring for so long now.

  • SeriouslyRight

I play world of warcraft my self and I enjoy It. I havn’t played in the last 6 months however cause I have college going on work and just havnt felt like it when i get home late after being busy all day. Its sad when ever response for this idea is because they are addicted… Sweet now I can play during school! Sweet now when we take vacations I can still play! Now when my mom takes me on a road trip I can play!
I think its a great idea but lets look from a buisness stand point, someone that looks at the opportunity and benefits who doesnt play the game. I think in that case its a great idea I know for one I find myself with more free time away from my laptop and desktop then I do with it (always doing homework, ect..) It would be a great passtime for those free moments when other wise I would do absolutely nothing. Now If you have to pay a fee then I might even consider only playing it from a mobile device and cancelling a computer subscription fee.

And in regards to the last person ranting about it ruining relationships and controlling peoples lifes. I wont disagree but I do have one comment and thats in reference to you saying in a year it costs as much as a gaming system. How many movies do you go to in a month? How much candy to you buy in a month for your self satisfaction? What kind of entertainment do you spend money on in a month? the average person sees 1-2 movies a month (10-20$), buys 1-2 treats at the movies (2-6$) that alone is more then a full month of entertainment of world of warcraft. you cant argue about the cost being dumb.

First of all, for those of you rambling about how addictive WoW is, it’s not the only addictive game. There are easily hundreds of games released at this moment that are played by people who play for at least 16 hours or more every day. If you dont believe me, log onto XBOX live, add 5-6 general ranked people in halo or any other high ranking person in another game to your friends list, and see how often they are online. Stop blaming just one game for addictions! It’s not the fact that the game is addictive, its that the people are addicted to video gaming.

  • George Stoev

A great idea if it gets out i’m on a quest to get that for my phone :)

  • http://WorldOfWarcraft Erica

Yeah. Such a great Idea. I can do a quest to and from work and an instance or two relaxing in bed :)

  • Tia

I think this is a brilliant idea!
The game will get more popular, because people will be able to play whenever they need, without the aid of a computer!
It’s been said that WoW gamers dont really get to see the light of day the but the actual fact is that some WoW gamers are in their teens and have to do mindless everyday tasks that involve going outside! (Such as school, learning… blah blah)

It will be a momentus occasion, and a memerable day for every WoW gamer, World of Warcraft just in your pocket!
There for when we’re feeling just a little bit etchy and fancy Pwning some noobs :) Haha!

Go on Blizz, you know you want to!
Not that you really need more money, but hell, you can never have to much, aye?

    For The Horde! :D

  • wowhater

wow! u guys are really nerdy! WOW! geeks! get a life! STOP playing too much WOW! get a LIFE! wow players need to sort out their priorities if they play every day! the biggest losers are those who are in guilds raiding like little fags :) LOL at those wow nerds who try raging back at me sorry if I offended u babe WOW FRIGIN NERDS l8zr

  • wistearia

I think WOW portable is awsome yes the screen is too small, but i think with all the technology out to day they could figure something out. It no doubt would be expencive but worth it.

Also on a more personal note the whole ADHD thing WHAT THE **** DOES ADHD HAVE ANYTHING TO DO WITH WEATHER OR NOT A HAND HELD GAME IS GOOD OR NOT FRANKLY YOU SHOULD BE ASHAMED PEOPLE WITH ADHD CANT HELP THE WAY THEY ARE AND ITS PEOPLE LIKE YOU THAT CAUSE MOST OF KIDS WHO HAVE ADHD TO BE HOOKED ON MEDS BECAUSE YOU CANT TOLERATE IT. YOU DISCUST ME!

But the game dephinatly will rock!

  • John

    It
Would be sweet if the controlls aren’t all messed up.but would it work on an iPod touch too?

  • Nagashi

So. This mobile thing is a good idea. But, how much more will it cost? Will there be a special type of phone needed to be purchased? Will my service provider charge extra during use?

The game in my opinion is not addicting. There needs to be something wrong with you if you play too much. For instance, you could be a perfectionist. Or Maybe you’ve always lacked a social life because of other people and it’s easy to make friends on WoW.

Also, the whole relationships thing, I have a boyfriend. He plays WoW. I play WoW. All ours friends play WoW. My ex, however did play WoW too much. He told me it was the only thing he felt he was good at. He also had a problem with not knowing what was more important in life, friends or getting a job. WoW doesn’t ruin relationships, people do. People with problems.

Overall, it’s a good game, it’s fun and full of variety. Lot’s of places to explore, friends to make, things to do.

If you play for 16 hours on a regular basis, I suggest finding someone, and talking about it. Anyone will do. And then try to ween yourself off of it. Try to keep it at like 6 hours, plus raid time. ‘Cause I know what it’s like. An hour of game play is not doable. It takes time to get things done.

In the end, if it doesn’t cost any extra, I’ll be sure to get it.

  • jusstin

i agree it is cool but i reccomend not to play on it on the computer because 1:it willl ruin ur social life and
2:ull have no life wat so ever

  • wilson

    that would be awesome!

  • ehhh

well i dont see anyone really able to use it the movement would be frustraiting only thin you could do is prolly check acctions at most and mail but other then that fart and a phones dosnt have enough ram or graaphics to support it i think this is gonna fail or its fake

  • http://WowGoldPig.com Cheap WoW Gold

This is too much for WoW players. WoW is really an invasion.

  • http://Nipis.org SkyRabbit

I can see it being good for checking In-Game Mail, Auction House stuff, maybe a “Mobile Vendor” to get rid of junk in your bags, and then there’s chatting with In-Game friends and Guild Mates… but, thats about it…

  • http://wowgoldpig.com wowgold

World of Warcraft on mobile is a great idea.Personally I feel that Wow addiction is a real threat, but I would not consider it as a mental disorder or a disease. Anything in the world can be addicted and abused, it is all about moderation.

  • Paul(Poland)

Damn…. I can’t install WoW on my mobile (Samsung Avila) … why? xD Where and how I can do it…? :l

  • fun man:)

ld really pay about 150 dollers or pounds for a iphone just tp play… its not worth it:)

  • http://www.winatwow.com Matthew C. Kriner

Very good point, fantastic blog. Listen, did you guys hear about Wow planning to use Real ID on the message board? It seems they came to the realization that that’s no way to win at wow, as they reversed their decision. Now we can all return to enjoying World of Warcraft without having to worry about compromised privacy. And they can return to working on Cataclysm. WooT!!!

  • Elerosse

This is most definitly fake news… The game would be unplayable on such a device. Besides I'm not sure an Iphone has sufficient resources to run a program like WoW.

Elerosse Feral drood on Dun Modr EU ;)

  • jackand jill

i wouldnt want to instance with anyone playing on an iphone

I think that idead sucks first reason is that it will be very uncomfortable to play on a little screen and pressing little buttons. The second reason is that all school kids could be an accident for that for example when they will cross road they will not notice either its red light or green because at that moment they will probably pvp with someone and then some car driver will drive on a big speed and then… I vote for NO !DO NOT ALLOW WOW ON PHONES!

  • Ich

"To believe is a good idea, people stared her cell phone while driving around like zombies?"

But most see it anyway just more in her cell it when the train or bus on the road. : P

  • Ariel

This idea won’t work, mainly because of the extreme amount of memory to play the game and how much graphics WoW has. Playing on a tiny screen automatically makes everything harder to read, harder to move around, and harder to play effectively.

I think it might work if it was just to check up on your character when you can’t go to your computer for long periods of time, but to actually try to play the game is a big FAIL. (And come on, you really must not have a life to want WoW installed on a phone…)
