ESPN.com have reported that Bob Knight, the Texas Tech Coach, resigned yesterday. 67-year-old Knight surprised his colleagues and fans by leaving in the middle of the season, although former coach and friend Pete Newell understood why Knight would want to resign after an amazing career boasting 902 victories.
Newell went on to say why he’s glad the college basketball coach has resigned,
“I’m glad to see he is getting out. He is worn out. Basketball is a lot tougher on coaches now. There is more money. There is more pressure. The media, it is all a lot bigger. . . . ”
Knight is known for his passion for basketball, and his no-nonsense approach. He wasn’t afraid to say what he thought and how he saw it - something which many saw as controversial.
Knight believed now was the best time to turn the program over to his son Pat Knight, who is also the coaches assistant. Pat will have a hard act to follow, his father won three national championships in Indiana and led the 1976 Hoosiers to an undefeated season, which was the last time a team finished unbeaten. The legendary coach won over 20 games in 29 seasons.
College Basketball has lost one of it’s greatest coaches. What do you make of his decision?
