Sony Blu-ray Win
It seems to be just a matter of time now to we see the end of HD DVD, with the news breaking today that Woolworths in the UK has dropped HD-DVD in favour of the Sony Blu-ray format. This news makes me glad I brought a Sony PS3, what makes this even more significant is the fact that Woolworths is “the UK’s biggest retailer of next-gen DVD discs” and it’s going to exclusively back Blu-ray from March 2008.

The store said that Blu-ray discs outsold HD DVDs by ten-to-one last month. Add this to other news around the world it looks like Blu-ray will be the winner of the next major format.

Do you think the Sony PlayStation 3 machine has added a lot to the success of the Blu-ray format?

Woolworths have 820 stores across the UK so this is a pretty big deal.

Its pretty amazing that BluRay outsold HD-DVD by 10:1 when they both had equal promotion in the stores and before the Warner defection.

I cant see how anyone can possibly think HD-DVD has a chance of survival.

The PS3 has obviously helped BluRay a huge amount. There are less than 1m standalone players of each format sold worldwide but over 9m players in PS3s. I’ve said all along that would always give a huge boost to the profile of BluRay and its public perception. It also seems to have been the deciding factor in Blockbuster, Woolworths and Warners pro BluRay decisions.

    I agree with wqwqwq…
The fact that sony had the foresight to put blu-ray in the ps3, I believe, is the deciding factor in this format war.
Since most people are generally fine with DVD right now, because HDtvs haven’t really saturated the market yet, the only reason people would want to buy an HD movie format is if they had a device, that they had bought for another purpose, that could play them.
