Burnout Paradise: Sony PS3’s HDMI & component vs Xbox 360’s VGA & component

Burnout Paradise PS3 vs 360
This kind of video really is a hot topic debate and one which some gamers have had enough of, but Game Trailers have felt they should post an Xbox 360 vs Sony PS3 video that is a little more in-depth.

The video below shows a comparison of Burnout Paradise, you get to see the Sony PS3’s HDMI and component compared to the Xbox 360’s VGA and component. In theory the HDMI should be better as it’s known in the electronics industry to be the better connection.

The comparison does look good, but the game moves very fast and makes it hard to capture the same footage.

Wow, the PS3 version looks so washed out and bland compared to the 360 version. I couldn’t speculate whether this is because of reduced texture memory or less shaders.

  2. chris on January 24th, 2008 12:56 pm

Wow, wish they would switch the settings on the PS3 so it will get rid of the white wash effect.

  3. Superdynamite on January 24th, 2008 3:17 pm

I have both versions side-by-side. Both running on LCD/HDMI. The PS3 version runs smoother and clearer with no lag online. The 360 version runs horribly online when the room is full. Both with a FiOs 20meg connection. This article is completely wrong. What they don’t tell you is that the game video above is not running in HD and was not captured in HD. It’s just XBox fanboy propaganda.

    Goodbye HD-DVD. Goodbye 360.

  4. SmilingAssassin on January 24th, 2008 3:34 pm

    Goodbye 360?
You are a complete fool if you think BluRay is superior to digital downloads?
I will never own an HD DVD or a BluRay player.
Hard Drive space is cheap and streaming media anywhere through my house over a server is way cooler than walking around a piece of plastic to stick in a machine. Especially when they will change that plastic format in another 6-10 years again and ask you to purchase all your movies over again.

  5. MDK on January 24th, 2008 4:59 pm

Are these comparisons ran with the same TV on the same settings?? If not WTF did you run the comparison for. Just for the record the PS3 version looks much sharper.

    @ Smiling Assasin.
How could you possibly think that everyone wants to digitally download every film they like?? I for one would like a case and inlay with a disk. It makes the film more “complete” to me. And I like to gawk at my collection of films on a stand so I can decide which one I want.
Can I ask you …do you pay for your digitally downloaded films?

  6. Charles on January 24th, 2008 6:14 pm

The change from DVD to These HD formats is not as compelling a change as VHS was to DVD. Why should I but a Blu-Ray or HD-DVD when I can buy an upconverting DVD player and it shows just fine. Really digital download is the way to go because I know so many people that use the internet to download music, videos, Movies, TV shows, and more. And they are not using the 360 or any system to do that just plain old internet.

  7. bd on January 24th, 2008 6:30 pm

Man you freaks come out of no were this article has nothing to do with blu-ray or hd-dvd so take your opinions to the proper location.

  8. MDK on January 24th, 2008 8:06 pm

    @ Charles
You said “digital download is the way to go because I know so many people that use the internet to download music, videos, Movies, TV shows”.

What about the rest of the population who you don’t know??

    @ bd

Don’t get stressed. The big news, if you are into HD at the moment, is the HD war so give us a break. I like to argue about it, whatever the thread. Out of interest - what have you got to say about the article as you did’nt exactly say much in you’re last post…infact … you said nothing relevant about it at all. Or do you just try to divert people to their “proper location”?

  9. Charles on January 24th, 2008 8:35 pm

    @MDK & BD

OK if you were paying attention to the replies you would have realized I was really talking to “SmilingAssassin”. Who happens to be the first one to go of topic. So why are you pointing me out. Do I have to spell out everyone I’m talking to? I thought that people here had enough sense to realized I’m following a thought pattern as you read through the replies this will become evident.

  10. Charles on January 24th, 2008 8:36 pm

As for the camparisons since you really want me to talk about it. 360 always has the better graphics so why should I care.

  11. OMEN on January 25th, 2008 3:47 am

they did not use the ps3 HDMI settings set to full in display menu,my doesn’t look the same it looks better.

  12. Johnny on January 25th, 2008 4:05 am

Whaaat?? Thi$$$ Look$$$ fi$$$hy if you know what i mean. On christmas i took my PS3 and a cousin took his Xbox 360 and there was a big difference but not as this article details. The PS3 graphics were way better using HDMI. I think microsoft is doing a great job buying out reviews, but an awful job fixing the “red ring of death” on its 360 consoles.

  13. Scott M. B. on January 25th, 2008 4:32 pm

They all pretty much seemed the same just the 360 vga looked jaggie to me. Yes the colour for the ps3 hdmi was off but anyone who has been paying attention knows thats an easy fix.

Now I just need to sell my Wii (but I can’t girl friend bought it for me after the 360 rrod) So I can get a ps3. But I brought it up and tried to sell her on home and little big planet as games she would like and then she throws this trip about how I am insulting her after she got me a wii and its not good enough, I think she got it so she could play it. No nookie for me :(

  14. ok on January 25th, 2008 7:25 pm

I don’t think the movie, tv or music industry thinks that digital download of torrent files are the future, because we all know thats what your refering to and as for your comment on people being fools for thinking blu-ray being superior to digital downloads, in what way is digital download any better? The best Hi-def digital download is inferior in quality as the content is compressed alot. You purchase a 500gb hdd and you fill it with high quality HD movies you purchased which isn’t that many by the way. Then you break your hdd, ooops all that money wasted on the hdd and the movies. Don’t compare blu-ray to your bad copy of an illegal downloads.

To the topic, GT have been usig the HDMI with the RGB limited on. which is an unfair test, the RGB should be set on full to show how HDMI is better.
You here that the PS3 version are washed out but that just on GT comparisons. I can have RGB limited on and still get plenty of colour on my TV if you get the settings right. Some people will have poor quality HD sets and have it in its defaults tv settings. If you have a bravia, you can get plenty of colour out of it without the RGB full on. With rgb on full the colour is much sharper and you get more colour.
The way GT are comparing the cable with one cable being limited is like comparing 2 sports cars around the track and limiting the BHP by half on one car.

  15. ok on January 25th, 2008 7:29 pm

…And how do I edit my spelling mistakes?

  16. Scott M. B. on January 25th, 2008 9:52 pm

I have digital cable and I can not imagine downloading 50gigs plus I have heard alot of providers will start charging by bandwidth used which means anyone who thinks they can download everything will soon be in for a crazy suprise.

Now that is just what I heard no one can believe anything they hear on the net :)

But in Calgary someone got charged an insane amount for using his cell phone to download from the net. Hope it doesnt resort to that with providers.

  17. fact finder on January 26th, 2008 7:44 pm

I find it pretty funny that the PS3 fanboys continue to make pointless arguments again and again. You take jabs at the hd-dvd people for supposedly backing an inferior format when in fact you are no different. Your precious PS3 people lied to you and I know it hurts which is why you can’t handle the truth. They spend so much time on blu-ray development and less time on software relationships that your constantly geting smoked by the “extremely inferior wii and xbox 360.” I find it so ironic that the PS3 or “supercomputer” as sony would have you believe is so amazing and great that they are not even close to catching the competition. Why is that? Is it no one can afford the supercomputer PS3…maybe…let’s look at gameplay, if it was so superior in this area why is it easily beaten in sales by the inferior Wii. How about sotware…with the amazing library of the PS2, the PS3 should have been a no brainer yet there the XBOX sits with a much higher game catalog and much higher game attach rate. The bottom line is that the PS3 exclusive titles have done nothing for the system while the Xbox exclusives have done everything for them. Let’s see the Xbox 360 is supposedly in inferior in very way yet it still continues to beat the PS3 ’super computer”…hmmm…how is this possible? Sure you can say all day long that microsoft bought the rights to everything but the real question is why didn’t Sony. They let you down PS3 fanboys. Instead of courting gaming companies to make you great games, they were handing their money to movie studios for blu-ray. It must feel really good to know you have the best blu-ray player when I am assuming you bought the PS3 to play games. Without great gamplay and excusive great software titles the best you can do is third place in a race of three. Must hurt to be in third place against such inferior competition. Congratulations!

Next up. Graphics and how the PS3 didn’t live up to the hype. Anyone remember all the CGI movies from E3 in 2005 and 2006 that showed what the PS3 was supposed to look like. Must suck to know you are not getting to play all those great CGI movies. Must suck to know as well that at best your PS3 supercomputer is only slightly better in graphics then the “far inferior” Xbox 360. After E3 the Xbox 360 and Wii were already dead before they even started yet here we are in 2008 with the PS3 sitting behind them. How could that happen?

The only real question you should ask youself and the proof is in the pudding here is…if my PS3 supercomputer is so amazing and great…it can even cure cancer…why is it not dominating the world over and over again. The Wii and 360 should not even have come close yet there they are up in front in this race while all the PS3 see in its rear view mirror is hd-dvd. Must feel good PS3 fanboys. Keep enjoying you high-def movies while US GAMERS are enjoying OUR great Wii and Xbox 360 games. Again congrats!

If there is something I find that I would like to reply to in one of your posts I will do so, whether aimed at me or not.
    @ fact finder
Not everyone who favours the overall performance of the PS3 oin this forum is a PS3 fanboy. I personally am just making an objective analysis on what I have seen so far. As I own both and have played several hours of gameplay on both, I feel entitled to do that.
The PS3 has only begun to use about 30% of it’s power on it’s best looking game so far - ‘Uncharted. Darkes Fortune’ and has a long way, as well as alot of exclusives (ICO 2, God Of War 3, MGS4, GT5, Wipeout HD, Resistance 2, Ferrari Challenge, Ratchet and Clank, F1, FIA World Rally Championship, Final Fantasy VIII…the list goes on) to look forward to. Microsoft have Halo, GOW, and Viva Pinata…wow.

  20. Charles on January 28th, 2008 4:19 am

    Fact Finder,

That is what I have been saying the whole time. You said everything the way I see it and it’s so true. PS2 sold some rediculos #’s and all PS3 had to do was capitalize on that. Instead they Pimped their fan who are gamers to push a Blu-Ray Player. No “game” plan what so ever and now there playing catch-up. They forgot that the Playstation is a game system first and not a movie player. They should have pushed the fact that games were being made with new High capicaty HD-Disk and a blue laser for better quality and the movies would have followed on their own. Instead they sell it as a Movie player first with gaming abilities. It’s even packaged with a Blu-Ray Movie. The 360 comes packed with 2 games most of the time. I got 4 when I bought my 360 on the day PS3 launched.

  21. MDK on January 28th, 2008 5:13 pm

    @ Charles
The only reason that Sony are playing catch up is because they are guilty of manufacturing a superb console which is not prone to failure. Microsoft got their foot in the door, but to what expense?? The RROD my friend. Next time I hope MS do not frustrate me and the other 30% of people who invested in cheap hardware.

  22. sted on January 31st, 2008 4:36 am

    @MDK

I realize the Cell processor is a super-computer processor. The PS3 is probably great at calculating statistics about nuclear radiation decay and the like, but gaming graphics are simply a different type of math.

The GPU on the 360 has a higher Fill Rate, more memory and a substantially less complex SDK which developers love. (Less Complex != Less Powerful)
Trying to make game developers write code that is completely balanced against 7 SPE’s, hah, good luck with that.

Burnout Paradise said their main platform is the PS3, so yea, in *this* case, maybe the PS3 achieves an extra +1 FPS somewhere along the lines, but the graphics power of the PS3 is not running at 30%, it’s more like 99%.

The PS3 is completely bottlenecked by their weak GPU. And that my friends, is the end-of-story.
    http://forum.pcvsconsole.com/viewthread.php?tid=19237

If you don’t like that link, feel free to google ‘GPU 360 vs PS3′ for yourself.
(hint: you won’t like what you find)

There are plenty of reviews when it comes to computer gaming about this exact same topic. Put a Super-Duper CPU in a case and give it a crappy video card. Next, take a mid-range CPU and pair it with the Best video card. The second computer will absolutely smoke the first.

So go ahead and calculate large primes, I’m going to play some games after work.

  23. sted on January 31st, 2008 4:48 am

    @MDK

I do agree, however, that the failure-rate of the original 360’s was nothing short of appalling, disgraceful and embarrassing.

I’ve heard the newer models suffer from less RRODs, but time will tell.

I made sure to extend my warranty.

  24. MDK on January 31st, 2008 8:32 pm

    @ Sted.

Hmmm…why then are the graphics and gameplay of Sony’s exclusives (though limited in numbers) so shockingly?? And a side by side comparison reveals that the PS3 has the sharper image on multiformat games? There maybe bottlenecks but I don’t think it will take developers such as naughty dog or SCEE to get round them. They seem to be exceeding the 360 in terms of sheer performance from my point of view - though the difference is marginal on multiformat games(but noticeable). And Sony have’nt forgotton why it is that games should be played - to enjoy! Not simply to play a mediocre offline excursion e.g. Halo 3, which serves as nothing more than a stepping stone to online play (which in my opinion is overated). A game needs to tell a story with depth and intrigue - MGS1 + 2 both captured my imagination for the entire time I played them and were both epic and memorable. Halo 3 was not. Interestingly enough, Halo 1 was the best Halo storyline IMO - is this because the developers did not waste valuble time concentrating on an online ‘life consuming’ mode?? Familiarity breeds contempt…when the game is finished…go buy a new one.

  25. Charles on February 1st, 2008 11:25 am

    @ MDK

Don’t talk shit. I dare you to name 5 multiplatform that look better on the PS3. Every video comparison out there shows that the 360 always does better graphics. There is only a few exceptions. And thoes exceptions can be improved any day. example: Oblivion. You can keep for forever delayed games while we already play them.

  26. MDK on February 1st, 2008 4:57 pm

    @ Charles.

No need to be rude son. My 5 are as follows - Colin Mcrae: Dirt, Burnout Paradise, Assasins Creed, Oblivion (as you rightly above), and Need for Speed Carbon.

A video comparison on the internet is not the best way to compare peformance - it is dependant on the settings of each TV and console on which they are played. When you do it yourself you can control all the factors involved then you can judge.

I have either bought or borrowed the above games and tried and tested on both formats. You have probably looked on a 360 fanboy website and formed subjective opinions about it.

  27. sted on February 1st, 2008 5:11 pm

    @MDK

    >>why then are the graphics and gameplay of Sony’s
    >>exclusives (though limited in numbers) so
    >>shockingly??

You mean the games that dont exist yet? or ones you’ve seen low-resolution videos for? gimme a break, Metal Gear won’t be anything more impressive than Call of Duty 4. I’ll put money on that.

    >>And a side by side comparison reveals that the >>PS3 has the sharper image on multiformat games?

You really are making things up. You bought a PS3 and are simply defending your purchase. I don’t believe you also own a 360 because your statements are not neutral, there is blatant bias on everything you say.

Also, besides graphics, one of the reasons I bought a 360 was the fact Microsoft is an American corporation. It’s the same reason I buy domestic cars. I take pride in my country and want to see it succeed. Not ship my money overseas.

So by that logic, MDK, I consider you a terrorist.
    >:)

  28. MDK on February 1st, 2008 9:07 pm

“Exclusives - though limited in numbers” - I believe is what I said in my previous post. Those exclusives are - Unchartered: Drakes Fortune - best looking game that there is on the market. If you had a PS3 and an HDTV you would realise that. The story line is superb and alot of fun to play.

Call of Duty 4 is a great game…but you just don’t understand what MGS is all about do you? The story lines are sublime and the graphics and gameplay are excellent - showing real balance.

Ratchet and Clank - another fantastic reason to play the PS3 - the game is alot of fun and looks great in a cartoony kind of way. The PS3 also shows how well it can cope with an almost infinate number of variables on screen at once.

You can disbelieve all you like. I own a 360 and a PS3. I was, for a 2 week period number one in the world on Las Vegas Boulevard on PGR3. I have also recently - last night infact, just downloaded the Devil May Cry demo on the 360. I own several arcade games such as Geometry Wars…Pinball FX…and have also downloaded classic demo’s such as Paper Boy and Sensible Soccer. So tell me how could I be lying about that?

It seems to me that your narrow minded subjective and pre-pubescant mentality governs everything you say. You can’t accept some people can own both consoles…and that there is substance to what I say…unlike your angry little statements.

Now…regarding terrorism. If you are telling me that you are an American and you are proud to invest in a Company such as Microsoft, which is happy to monopolise the global market in computing industry and will stop at nothing to monopolise everything else it can get it’s grubby mits on then … congratulations!! You really are inline with Satan are’nt you? As far as Americans taking pride in their country…that’s great. But don’t expect me to do it because I’m British you Tw@t!!

  29. MDK on February 1st, 2008 9:36 pm

Exclusives such as Drakes Fortune, or Ratchet and Clank? Or F1 2006? Motorstorm?
They are all superb and not only look better than the most 360 exclusives but the gameplay is superior also.

Call of Duty is a great game, but to compare it to MGS is just lame. They are two different games and MGS’s storylines are absolutely sublime something which the COD series cannot claim to be (Well done to Infinity Ward for producing the game of the year though).

You don’t seem to be able to cope with the idea that anyone else could own both consoles and actually contruct statements with some substance, unlike the statement which you have been making which are unsubstantiated nonsense.

I own a 360. I was no.1 for 2 weeks on Las Vegas Boulevard on PGR3 - I recently downloaded the Devil May Cry Demo - I have purchased Pinball FX, Geometry Wars - I have downloaded several demos such as Sensilble Soccer and Forza 2 (aswell as playing Forza for a time). I have the FN3 wallpaper on my dashboard. I have over 8000 gamerpoints (not bragging about that - there are lots of people including my friends who have alot more). So tell me … how could someone who does not own a 360 know so much about it?? I am not anti 360 - I have just made a informed judgement on what I have seen and played.

If you are saying that you support Microsoft - the company which monopolises everything it gets it’s grubby little mits on to the detriment of other companies in the market then you really are inline with Satan are’nt you.

Now. If you are saying that you support America and wish to put your money into your own economy then - great. I’m all for that. Just don’t expect me to keep doing the same - I’m British you twat!

  30. MDK on February 1st, 2008 9:39 pm

Err…I thought my first post did not post. Hence my re-written post which is slightly different from the first post. Doh!

  31. Scott M. B. on February 1st, 2008 9:52 pm

Sony is looking better and better all the time and I look forward to buying one. Now I just need to sell of my 360 games and controller (wireless and cheap anyone?).

I don’t know what is wrong with you guys, we need competition or our games will not be bigger and better, why do you love corporations so much as to insult people online that I can guarantee you would have a normal conversation about pros and cons face to face. The Ps3 has only been for what a year or something and I am sure if some one took the time to see sales and games for Xbox in that time frame it would be the same.

God when the 360 came out I bought Tony hawks American wasteland? That game looked worse than the original Xbox and gun I bought, that was a graphical piece of crap game and I am sure there is more if I went and looked for them. How quickly we forget, so give the ps3 a year and I am sure it will kill the 360 even just because of its crazy folowers who piss the rest of the world of. I am sorry you bought the 360 Since I also did and after the second broke I will not make the same mistake (regardless of the fact it was replaced twice) (Good customer service shoddy machine just like ford, Chevy, dodge, Dell etc…)

So I was a 360 owner and I agree with MDK, but maybe because I am Canadian and just can’t see why you’re raving fan boys other than love of your country which is cool. I love mine.
    But it is no reason for me to be blind to what I see and that is the PS3 pulling ahead in sales and graphics as the year goes on. Maybe I will eat my words if I am wrong, but globally the trend is shifting towards the box you hate so much, so learn to love it. :}

Ohh, you’re from the UK.. well, I will forgive your stupidity then. It’s not entirely your fault.

On another note, quit playing PGR so much. If you really were ranked number 1, then I truly feel sorry for you. Real Life is a lot more interesting than Video Games anyway. I only play when I’m tired/bored, whereas you play to achieve meaningless goals.

lol, MDK is a real-life 40 year old virgin.

You must be kidding if download content at 720p is going to be anywhere near as good… lets face it xbox will never have True HD 1080p because they would have to compress it so much to fit on a dvd. Iv seen downloaded streamed and cable hd v’s blu-ray and let me tell you Blu-Ray wins in every single area… and if u hard drive fails u dont have to buy your whole collection again ! bonus.

but you could say if my house burnt down id loose all mine but even if i had it downloaded id still loose it :P xbox’s future is 720p same with apple tv.. us ps3 gamers can only stand 1080p im afrade
