$40 Million On Opening Weekend

This weekend saw a rush of movie fans running to the box office to secure their ticket for the highly-anticipated ‘Cloverfield’. This meant that the JJ Abrams and Matt Reeves’ monster movie took in a mammoth $41 million - the highest 3-day January opening ever!

With the Martin Luther King holiday still in full swing, the final opening weekend numbers won’t be known for another day but it’s expected the film will top out at around $50 million.

Considering the movie took just $25 million to make and has no huge Hollywood stars, it’s an amazing opening amount. I just hope that Abrams and Reeves don’t think that this means a sequel would be as popular - it would ruin the whole point of Cloverfield.

The weekend wasn’t all about monster movies though. Chick Flick 27 Dresses, starring Katherine Heigl, also had a respectable opening weekend pulling in $22.4 million.
