Why .mobi domains? iPhone proves people do not want

Why .mobi domains? Following my last post about the news that the Apple iPhone is the number one phone used on Google with only 2% of the smartphone market, the people are proving they do not need or want the .mobi domains and the mobile web that way.
Why have .mobi domains when you can view the websites as they are on a phone, many more phones will go the iPhone route with full web browsing in the next 5 years.
One friend said to me “of course and it is very good what apple iphone have got I have used one and they are amazing, if they can get sim free (unlocked) versions then we can see a massive appeal”.
I replied by saying that .mobi seems a hyped up waste of time, in the real world people are proving they like browsing the web as is (iPhone no.1 used phone on Google and only having 2% of smartphone market share KIND OF PROVES THAT) and it does not have to be an iPhone.
You have the PSP which is another portable web browser, other phones can and will create there own version of browsing the web the same way.
China can make phones very cheap and I am sure they will make phones that browse the web as it is and these will be good for 3rd world countries where people have little money.
Remember we are talking the future here, not now so in 5 years why have .mobi?

Then why are people making webapps (which are bascially mobile websites, some using .mobi domains), for the iphone? Furthermore, why is apple promoting these webapps?

Do your research first, before you make yourself look even more stupid.
Hey Daniel,
Tried to read the text on your right example…but the font is too small..
Oh…have to zoom, horizonal scroll etc..
So annoying..and it takes minutes to load through my carrier…
Martin
What phone you using Martin, as the iPhone does read all very clear when on side…just as good as any PC.
And 2008 is already seeing many phones coming with the same sort of web browser as the iPhone.
It does read very clear when zooming…and scrolling horizontally (I hate that..)
Also…an average ‘normal’ website takes minutes to load when not using a wifi hotspot..
Site designed according the .mobi specs are loaded within seconds. Even with slow carriers..
Open for example these 2 sites: http://www.autodisk.nl and http://www.autodisk.mobi (sorry in dutch..but you will get the point)
Now..be honest. Which site reads easer, quicker and less annoying..
Bye..
Hi Martin, I understand what you mean as of today.
But in 5 years as I said in the post (or maybe much sooner), technology will of changed a lot and speed would be not much of an issue.
Annoying is having to go to different sites for the same content, I think the future will see most phones browsing the web as it is and the iPhone being the most used phone browsing Google as of today with only a 2% smartphone market share shows an idea that people find it easier and in 5 years things will be better with speed and more phones browsing the web like this.
“KIND OF PROVES THAT”
is that science -101?
Also Martin, looking at the two domains you showed above yes the .mobi is faster…so why are the sites I see on my home computer not all like that.
They are not because we like the .ni version of the two domains you showed, we want it because we can have it NOW on our PC’s.
The future on the mobile web will be the same, the better the technology then we will want more content like our home computer sees.
This is very possible in 5 years on the move with many handsets…so .mobi still seems a waste of time and using 2 domains.
That’s a nice screen shot of the iphone (if you want to look at pictures)
Every single large Corporation in this industry (including Apple) are all calling for mobile specific websites that are “Made For Mobile”
Trying to surf PC sites on ANY mobile device is very time consuming and expensive from zooming in, scroll, zoom out, scroll, zoom in, etc.,if they even load at all.
.Mobi is NOT trying to take over the mobile World but is basically setting the standard on what is acceptable for “ALL” mobile devises to render mobile web sites in a timely fashion and not go blind (or broke) from trying to get the information you want while your away from your PC and “Guarantees” you will get the information you require when accessing a made for mobile website.
The more sites that are built for the mobile web (be it .mobi, m.site.com, site.com/mobile or what ever) the faster this market will grow and that’s clearly where ALL the big boys are placing their bets in a market that is 4 times as big as the fixed PC sites.
John have you used an iPhone for looking at the web…honest and for more than 15 mins.
As its so easy to look online at anysite and very clear.
Google’s vice president, Vic Gundotra said “Consumers are going to demand Internet browsers” as good as Apple’s.
But I must say after reading all your comments, I can see .mobi having a place in the future as what John said “basically setting the standard on what is acceptable for “ALL” mobile devises”.
I can understand that, having something for all mobiles not just the ones with a better browser…although I see the mobile web not being used more than the normal web if the browsers are very good people will just visit the normal sites…just like I do EVERYDAY on my iPhone.
