Google Apple iPhone Traffic Surge: best for web browsing, forget .mobi

Apple iPhone
Last night I was resting upstairs and at the same time browsing Google and other sites on my Apple iPhone, I was also logging into different accounts for sites I visit and it just shows that nothing is better for web browsing.

Today I see the New York Times backing up my claim with news that Google has seen a surge of traffic from Apple iPhone users (one of them is me).

What is even more amazing is the iPhone accounts for just 2 percent of smartphones worldwide and it’s the number one phone used on Google. This just proves that it’s not only easier for me to use but millions of other people.

I posted a while ago about the mobile web, I said “forget .mobi, iPhone or phone projector is future of web browsing” as the iPhone lets you view webpages as they are and not a version designed for phones. The Apple iPhone views web pages just as your computer does meaning only one site needed…so much easier all round for everyone.

So it looks like the iPhone type web browsing is the future and .mobi domains may be a waste of time 5 years down the line.

For people that say .mobi domains are needed because not everyone can afford an iPhone, I say that the FUTURE will see many phones with iPhone type web browsing and I am sure the 3rd world countries will have very cheap made phones from places like China (we know how they like to copy).

Your article does make a very good argument. I do agree that technology will fairly soon allow us to view internet on most mobile devices, even the budget ones. If you don’t mind I still would like to make argument for the use of .mobi domains.

Navigating today through many websites, even using a large PC screen, can be very frustrating, as information is often difficult to find. In many cases the design takes the president over the content. dotMobi on the other hand forces the publisher to present relatively pure information, a “boiled down” version of the content. I believe that most internet users value their time, and get frustrated fairly quickly if they can’t find what they are looking for.

Being able to view a website on a mobile device does not necessarily equal being able to get quickly and efficiently what you want. And, if it’s hard and frustrating to find what you want on a large computer screen it is that much harder and much more frustrating to get it on a tiny display.

Speaking purely from life experience, I would argue that user’s patience level is in direct proportion to the size of display. Smaller the display faster we get frustrated.

I believe that given time (and good marketing) .mobi domain eventually will become a sort of “elite” address of mobile internet. In the mean time, m.something.com, mobi.someting.co.uk, wap.someting.com.au, mini.someting.net, someting.org/pda, mobile.someting.com, something.com/wireless, and so on don’t have the same quality ring to it as someting.mobi .

I like how you say that, “Today I see the New York Times backing up my claim with news that Google has seen a surge of traffic from Apple iPhone users (one of them is me)” as if to validate your worth.

There is google, as in google US and then there is Google, as in Google globally.

Then there is Yahoo, Baidu, Sina, and other search engines other than Google. Yes, Google is big. But not a favorite.

Sorry, but you seem more bent on saying .mobi is not needed as you say the iPhone is all that is needed.

Here’s a real simple question for you…who else is debating this subject of .mobi other than people in the domain business?

Nice to know that you have so much clout that the New York Times checks in with you prior to going to publication.

“…backing up my claim”. Perhaps they can back up your claim that .mobi is not needed.
