Soul Calibur IV: will Star Wars risk pay off?

Game publisher Namco have taken a massive risk by including Star Wars characters in Soul Calibur IV, some say it’s great to see a brand take a risk while others cannot make the connection of Star Wars to Soul Calibur IV.
With Darth Vader being an exclusive to the PlayStation 3 and Yoda appearing on the Xbox 360 version of the game, this will now make the game appeal to gamers that no nothing of Soul Calibur.
Star Wars is a massive brand with millions of fans, Soul Calibur IV may see many more gamers buy it for this Spin on the game or it could just make the game look stupid and unrelated.
Do you think the risk will work that Namco has taken with Soul Calibur 4?
With no real Star Wars connection, what does this mean for future games?

Dark Vader will be cool Yoda is gay. The PS3 version will be better than the Xbox 360 like always.
Lol, like always… ahaha thats great, in a dilusional sense of comedy…
That aside, I loved the 3 unique character approach of Soul Calibur 2, of which the NGC version was my fav.
Star Wars is a safe, somewhat un-interesting choice of property to bring in but this in no way suggests that it wont work.
Personally, I’m more looking forward to an expanded custom character creation system.
Lets wait and see if Darth Vader even shows up to the fight on time first eh ;), or will it be another case of delay.
Not cool. Really. Soul Calibur is Soul Calibur, Star Wars is Star Wars. They are COMPLETELY different. And they don’t belong together. Now… On the other hand if you wanted to make a Star Wars fighting game with the Soul Cal engine or something, that would be amazing. But not this. No. Epic failure.
To me, as a huge Soul Calibur fan, is kinda putting me off from buying the game.
I have NOTHING against Star Wars, but I do have lots of stuff against paying for DLC, which is the current big rumour going on, saying we might be able to get the ‘other’ character through DLC, or even having the possibility to download even more characters through DLC.
Not for me. I dont want any part of the whole current DLC scam. Any many games that make use of the option (Forza 2, Naruto, etc) I’ve boycotted for that reason. In cases like this, I’ll just buy another game that DOES give the FULL experience for 60 bucks, and just wait and hope games like this will just offer the DLC completely free after a while, or include it all in a ‘platinum/classic-version’.
I want no part in the DLC scamming.
in sc2 icould understand zelda…tekken abit and i sopose spawn is reealy kool kos kinda like helish mystical.but star wars is just plane silly.its si fi .put first party carecters in .it makes sence.
A terribly written article…
“massive risk,” “no nothing,” “could just make the game look stupid and unrelated.”
Poor writing aside, the subject of this article seems pointless. This “risk” of using characters not associated with soul calibur is nothing new. For example, Soul Calibur 2 saw Link from the Legend of Zelda in the Gamecube version of the game. The series appears to be doing just fine…
I was actually kind of excited by the introduction of Darth Vader to the PS3 version of Soul Calibur. Maybe it was just the trailer, but he just seems to fit in so well…
I love Soul Calibur and am a bit perplexed by this decision. A unique figting game with just Star Wars would be awesome. Marrying the two together like this just seems odd… Maybe they will have Luke, Leia, Han, Obiewan and others as unlockables… Whatever the case, I will still buy a copy. Vader would be cool but I will have to settle for Yoda.
It kinda makes sense that Darth Vader would want a sword that not only kills the body but also destroys the soul. Those pesky Jedi will no longer train a new student from beyond the grave.
I really don’t see what the risk is. If you don’t like Star Wars, DONT PLAY DARTH VADER OR YODA. Jeez, people fuss about the simplest things.
aw man, i wanted yoda cause i have a ps3
he can jump like 3 stories high and do like quadruple back flips
no and know, two different words with different meanings which only sound the same.
Well , this is very interesting.
But this is kind of strange.
I say that master chief ( Halo) w/ a gravity hammer or an energy sword would be mad wicked.
Yoda should be replaced w/ him , making a huge hit toward the 360 franchise , obviosly eliminating the Wii and the PS3 to exstinction
Well, the teaser really caught me off guard. At first I thought that it was just a parody of Soul Calibur, but then the CGI was flawless. A real nerd would do such a thing, but I don’t think that there are ones like that.
Now I really want the game just to have a jedi fight.
Your right though, really risky situation.
To me…all of you guys are completely stupid…you should be glad to see collaborations like this….yeah they are unrelated….but I have the game…and its amazing…if u think otherwise then you’re probably neither a Soul Calibur fan or Star Wars fan…and if you’re not willing to pay a little extra for DLC then there’s a lot of games you wont be playing I guess….what kind of GAMERS are you people?..wow..friggin Noobs
In SC2 Heihachi made the most sense since both SC and Tekken are of Namco. Link was appropriate for the GC, but Spawn was a bit random
Personally I don’t see what the big deal is about adding Star Wars Characters. It’s not like they’re taking over the entire game or something, it’s three characters, I heard rumors of being able to download Yoda/Darth Vader depending on your console, as well as two additional characters for DLC, but still that’s only five Star Wars Characters and like Joey said, if you don’t like Star Wars, don’t play as the characters and don’t download them when and if they come out. I’m not a huge fan of Soul Calibur. I bought Soul Calibur II because of Link and loved it and then bought Soul Calibur IV for the Star Wars characters. Gamers are so frickin whiney about the lamest things sometimes. Believe me, in “know” way is this game going to feel or seem stupid to anyone, Soul Calibur or Star Wars fan, or both, it’s just a simple addition. They aren’t even a part of the storyline if you don’t want them to be, and besides, their stories are lame anyways. It’s just fun to fight with them (get over the whole thing about sabers cutting through anything and use your imagination, KOTOR had swords versus sabers, think of it like that, like the swords are made to resist sabers).
Additionally, if you don’t think the Star Wars characters “fit” with the theme of Soul Calibur, you are very wrong. Their costumes may be more “futuristic” and they may be from a science fiction film, but their original design was influenced by medeival knights and tales of old kingdoms, only set in a future science fiction world. Both Star Wars and Soul Calibur are set in a fictional fantastical world, Star Wars just brings Science fiction into the mix, but it’s not like there are no science fiction aspects of Soul Calibur, there are TONS. Look deeper and you will see they are perfect fits, far more so than Spawn was for Soul Calibur II, that would be like throwing Spiderman into Soul Calibur IV, now THAT would be stupid.
By the way, poopy, I agree with you completely. In no way should there even be an arguement about this, either you like Soul Calibur or Star Wars or you like both, in any case this game is perfect for you. It’s an awesome fighting game, way fun and if the Star Wars characters do anything, they only improve on the game by adding a welcomed change of pace to the constant metal clanging on metal.
