Sony Blu-ray: current disc players not future-proof, apart from PS3

Today it is clearer more than ever that Sony Blu-ray looks to be the future high definition movie format, although current disc players are being reported as not “future-proof” apart from the Sony PS3.

The Consumerist is reporting that “current Blu-ray disc players were built without future-compatibility capabilities”, with the news of BD Live coming in summer 2008 (the service featuring enhanced interactivity and internet connectivity) how will customers who brought Pioneer, Samsung, Panasonic and Sony standalone Blu-ray players feel when they know their players may not support these new features.

Looks like Sony PS3 owners got the best deal again.

    Well it has only been the cheapest bluray player since launch, it’s common sense to buy one.
    Oh and the updates over the 7 year life of the console to keep it fresh. “Thanks sony”

    I did.
    And wouldn’t change it for the world.

    I wouldn’t trade my PS3 for any game console or Blu-ray player on the market. PS3 will last just as long as the PS2. Thanks for another 10 year system!

    Thiefs Sony are !!!!!!!!!!!!! You build a product & spend over
    $1000 & you have ot update it agin for future discs. THIEFS SONY HERE – THEY SHOULD BE SUED FOR MILLIONS OF DOLLARS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
    I haave never heard of this ever before you buy a product, & need to pay another $1000 for discs

    2 YEARS LATER WILL THIS HAPPEN

    What are you talking about? its just updating the firmware or software which is run by java not the actual disc. what they can do is put the update into the disc and update it from there thats how simple it is.

    Well that’s great, I’m set with 2 PS3s right now. If another model comes out that’s better than the 80 gig model, I’ll probably get it as well and put it in one of my cars. It’s awesome having 2 of them right now, not having to carry it from room to room when there’s already one in the bedroom and living room. SONY, I salute you.

    Hello to editors – you guys are truly ignorant ppl. Do you complain that your WalMart elcheapo DVD player isn’t FUTURE PROOF??? What sort of nuggets are you lot? You expect to buy a first model of ANYTHING and be able to have all the future features? Seriously.. what fantasy land are you people living in?

    It’s true that some of the current Blu-ray players may not be ready to fully support the more advanced features of Profile 1.1, or eventually Profile 2.0, because it may take more than software modifications to reach compliance.

    For example, no amount of firmware updates will “fix” any Blu-ray player without an Ethernet port, or the required amount of onboard storage (1GB I believe, for Profile 2.0).

    However, if Blu-ray players do have these physical requirements in place, it’s a fairly painless process to upgrade the firmware.

    It’s a shame that the full Blu-ray specification wasn’t mandatory when the first players were launched, but such is life when you have a format war going on (HD DVD launching first caused Blu-ray to be rushed out). Nothing is fully future-proof anyway.

    The web features may not be much of a loss to people, but early adopters may feel more aggrieved if some of the interactive features (picture-in-picture, alternate soundtracks, etc.) aren’t accessible.

    Maybe Blu-ray hardware manufacturers who put out early machines could offer either some kind of hardware upgrade (it might be possible), or a rebate on new equipment?
