The first man to conquer Mount Everest Sir Edmund Hillary Has Died Aged 88.
Sir Edmund became the first climbers to reach as they say the roof of the world on May 29,1953.
They were part of a British expedition, led by John Hunt, but it was former beekeeper Hillary who first stepped on to the 29,000ft summit.
His achievements were not confined to Everest alone.
Sir Edmund led expeditions to the South Pole and to the source of the Yangtze River and he was the first man to drive a tractor across Antarctica.
He also committed himself to humanitarian work among the Sherpas with his Himalayan Trust.
Actor Brian Blessed, who tried and failed to climb Everest three times, said: “He was a complete legend and a giant of a man. It was a colossal achievement.”
All our thoughts are with his family and friends at this time.
