American Idol: Simon Cowell admits team must do better to find long-term potential
Apparently Simon Cowell has admitted that the American Idol team must do better this year to find an artist with long-term potential.

Simon said in response to past contestants Taylor Hicks, Katharine McPhee and Ruben Studdard being axed by their record labels that “It’s a reflection on the unpredictability of the record business. Fortunately, we got it right more than we got it wrong, there’s no scientific way to explain what happens. It’s a reality show and what happens at the end is also reality.”

Simon went on to say the “What you want [is] a Carrie [Underwood], Christopher Daughtry or Kelly Clarkson, where they’re competing with the Mariahs.

As we all know Kelly Clarkson has made it big her and the US and it looks like that Leona Lewis from the UK is going the same way.

The singers are out there it is just finding the ones that will make it big.

What do you think of the past winners?

Simon is an idiot and makes statements that you just have to laugh at. Kelly Clarkson was AI’s first winner, properly promoted, good voice. This year she stood up to Clive Davis and she was pushed down the charts faster than lightening. Carrie Underwood is a country singer, nice voice, pretty girl, not recognized by her peers because she hasn’t paid her dues. Chris Daughtry is the biggest joke on earth, sounds and looks like every other rock/pop band (not sure what he is), voted off too many reality shows. Clive Davis drowned the radios with payola, he went from a nobody and certainly nobody cared about him - to a superstar in one month. False hype, the radio blasts with not one, two but three songs at the same time. Either you listen to this crap or shut the radio.

Why doesn’t the media print the truth? If you’re a nobody and are lucky enough to get pushed and promoted, imo there are too many out there that are better than the above.

American Idol has reached it’s peak, the show is a scam and most contestants from this year already have connections. I thought American Idol wanted to find the best undiscovered talent? No way, it’s all about the delusions of the music industry.

Surely one of the show’s main aims is to entertain the TV viewing masses, and in that respect it certainly delivers year upon year. The acts that do well may not have full respect with every community within their respective genres but what they do is bring those genres to a mass audience, who may in return look further into their newly acquired taste.

Regarding what goes on behind scenes, I doubt you or I really know what goes on. Admittedly we do hear of previous connections within the industry, but if you are a talented singer it’s not unlikely that you may have previous connections. I think it’s important to be sceptical, but let’s not forget what this is, and that’s a great show that entertains record numbers of people every series.

I know that when it comes to ITV2 every year in the UK, it’s certainly one of my top choices.

    Just my thoughts, anyone else?

I think Cowell fails to acknowledge that sales are related to not just the talent of the artist or his appeal to the public. Part of the problem too is AI’s huge focus on guest stars last , many of which couldn’t sing or mentor. No one got a sense of what these people are really like. Blake Lewis, for example, is an excellent songwriter and producer. His CD is full of good pop music that is mostly all his. So far, sales are lackluster, though. He was pegged as one-dimensional–just a beatboxer–last season. Maybe if more had been drawn out, people would realize the guy is seriously good.

simon is for sure a moron, he says we just to do better, how do you get better than a voice like katharine mcphee, she just choose the wrong music, secound time around with david foster will be much better, her single recording of SWOR was produced by foster, it gave me chills, her cd was good, but not promoted!
