How will US Rep Ron Paul do in New Hampshire debate?

By: Daniel Chubb | January 5, 2008 | 42 Comments

Ron Paul new hampshire debate

Today will see the first New Hampshire debate between Romney; McCain, Rudy Giuliani, Huckabee; Ron Paul and Fred Thompson.

The Democratic field is smaller and includes Bill Richardson, Edwards, Obama and Clinton.

ABC News anchor Charles Gibson will try and get the politicians to debate among themselves by giving them three major issues while they sit in a semi-circle.

The second half of each 90-minute debate will see specific questions thrown at the candidates; this debate was arranged in conjunction with Facebook and ABC. Some of the questions we hear may come from issues that were raised by members of Facebook.

As Ron Paul is one of the biggest candidates online, how do you think US Rep Ron Paul will do in New Hampshire debate?

My hope is that Dr. Paul will do well.

If you want more war, more taxes and more foreign entanglements vote for anyone other than Ron Paul.

i really hope dr paul does well

They say that America has influence on the world.I hope Ron Paul becomes president and that truth politics rubs off on the rest of (us).

I think that he will smoke them like he has in every other debate. Not a single one of them has the credibility and integrity that this man personifies. He’s intelligent on issues that the others don’t even want to touch (like the real reason the dollar is falling!), and displays a common sense that has eluded recent politicians for decades. (Hey, can I get a balanced budget, please?) I think that the combination of intelligence, common sense, and integrity that Dr. Paul wields will absolutely decimate the competition. The only thing they are going to bang him on is the war and try to make him out to be some kind of pacifist wimp. That is just their distorted views…our borders are not in Iraq, or Pakistan, or anywhere besides N. America. They don’t understand the concept of taking care of ones’ own, FIRST. The federal Govts’ job (according to our constitution) is to protect our liberties and our borders, and very little else. I hope that he shoves that fact down their throats and remind them, yet again, that the Republican Party IS the anti-war party…the balanced budget party…the limited govt party. All the things that we, as Americans, have turned our backs on. Now the apathetic are awakening, and the disgruntled old-school GOPer’s are going to be a huge factor in restoring our once great republic. Is the Neocon vision of perpetual war really what people want?

Ron Paul always does well in the debates. He is the only candidate that speaks the truth, addressing real issues, problems, and solutions with our government. Ron Paul understands the need to protect the constitution and the rights of all people. No more war, no more taxes.

  • Free Speech

Ron Paul will do great in this debate. Ron Paul supports the constitution and is a true patriot. The rest of the field doesn’t stand a chance. People are slowly waking up that the status quo in the USA needs to be changed.

    Ron Paul wins EVERY debate!!!

I think how he does will be determined by whether you are really looking at the issues or just looking at the “style”. We all know Dr. Paul is not the most charismatic. It’s the issues themselves that he has a handle on. I don’t agree with them all but he’s certainly the best candidate out there.

I am simply amazed by this man, go Ron Paul!

  • don

I expect we are going to see a much more aggressive Paul in this one.. They will be calling Ron out, and he will smoke them..

  • Andy

Ron Paul’s gonna suck. Sorry for telling the truth.

  • George Dance

After watching videos of the earlier debates, I think he will do quite well. Despite being marginalized, given hostile questions, and laughed at, he stayed calm, in control and on message.

While his folksy speaking style may remind some of Grandpa rambling n, a careful listen will show that his rambles are really carefully collected strings of soundbites and talking points.

The only problem with Paul’s performance in the earlier debates was that not that many Americans saw and heard him. I think they’ll be turning in tonight, and that they’ll be turning in to see this sudden new phenomenon they know next to nothing about. And I predict that Dr. Paul won’t disappoint them; he’ll deliver another stellar performance.

I see a lot of the word “hope” in these comments… I’ll tell you this, for me, the way I look at it in relation to the other candidates, I KNOW Dr. Paul will due better than a SUPERB job in the debate. He always has, he always will.

  • Isaac

Ron Paul will show the stinking neocons who this party belongs to!

  • Dan Hansen

When Ron Paul is on his game he is the most articulate and persuasive communicator of the core values of liberty and freedom that I have ever heard. This is why he has won the online polling for the debates – when he’s rocking & rolling he *owns* the opposition.

But like all things if you are not receptive to the message (for whatever reason) then even a communicator will not change your mind.

  • Harr

Iowa was a victory for Dr. Paul, This man is a doctor and knows how to deliver. He will do so in the abc debate, and the new hampshire people will give him top three placement for sure. Then we are looking at a completely different race. I have Two kids and they deserve to grow up in the beautiful country that i did. So do your families as well. Go Dr. Paul!!!

Read this to the harmony of the 13th warrior prayer.

Lo,do i hear the cry of my people back from the begining.
Lo,they do call to me,and beg me to return this counrty to the people of freedom and liberty.
And to take my place among them in the halls of freedom.
Where LIBERTY and PEACE can live FOREVER!!!

The latest Rasmussen telephone poll of likely GOP voters in NH has Ron Paul at 14%. Those polls under-count Ron Paul. In Iowa the telephone polls under-counted him by 37%. It that number holds, he could get 19%. A strong showing appears likely.

  • Saul Tanner

I have faith Ron Paul will handle any question they ask him.

I’ve seen it before; he can handle the most snarky, insinuating and linguistically manipulative question thrown at him.

And, trust me, they will, especially at this one, he’s starting to truly scare the establishment.

    It gonna get fun now!

    Go Ron GO…

Seeing that Ron Paul has the only view points that differs from the other candidates I think he will do quite well in NH . way to go NHGOP 4 pulling sponsorship from Fox .

Never before did I have the inclination to give a dime to any presidential candidate. Before Ron Paul all politicians were to me like changing a flat tire on my car with another flat tire.

In my opinion after listening and learning about Ron Paul I found that he’s not a self serving phony flat tire like the rest.

I sent Ron Paul $25 in November and $100 in December and there’s more where that comes from !

I never thought I ever send money to a politician in my lifetime and I’m 65 years old.

I’ve been here since Truman and no President or Presidential Candidate has ever made me feel good about America’s future before like Ron Paul has.

In my opinion America is going flat broke; bankrupt ! Only Ron Paul speaks to saving our financial system; preventing America from becoming a third world country.

I posted the following to a CNN blog. It’s been “awaiting moderation” for a long time.

What Fox is doing with Dr. Paul is not half as shameful as what CNN did in the debate that he did participate in. They made him wait over half an hour before being allowed to take a question. Others were allowed to answer twice to some questions during that time. He was given far less time than others. The questions he was allowed to respond to were either trivial or loaded with slanderous implications. The questions were in the form of videos submitted via YouTube. Many of the people chosen were supporters of Democratic candidates. Some had previously posted nasty videos on YouTube antagonistic to Ron Paul.

At least Fox is open about it. Their excuse for excluding him does not hold water, but at least they did not invite him into their little bus with the intention of mauling him.

    Ron Paul did great.

I live in California and I personally know someone who is giving up three weeks of his life, paying his own way to New Hampshire to help the Ron Paul campaign any way he can. He is prepared to sleep on a sofa and work long hours because Ron Paul is not only the best candidate in this election — he is the best candidate in recent history. I know many others are similarly self-sacrificing now in order to secure a much better future for America.

So yes, I think Ron Paul has a chance.

  • mgginva

All the MSM are guilty of trying to marginalize Dr. Paul. Some have been slightly better than others, but when he appears as a picture of an elephant on ABC, is not allowed a seat on Faux and has all praise buried on blogs rather than in print, it becomes obvious that he has been treated not just unfairly but with an end in sight. The destruction of his campaign. BUT it has not worked. The internet has saved us and the youth of today have fueled us. It’s about damn time the “kids” got a cause! I salute them and they make me proud. Ron Paul will have a voice regardless of what the evil money-counters say. Peace, Love. mgg

  • Republicae

Dr. Paul was ignored, raked, scrapped and trampled upon and yet, when he was allowed to speak he did so with a calm eloquence that contrasted the ole recycled rants of the other candidates! Dr. Paul clearly expressed his knowledge on the issues despite the overt attempts by the other candidates to silence his expertise. I dare say that the other candidates didn’t have a clue what he was talking about, at least from their relatively hylobatidaen grunts and mutterings.

  • Abe

Excellent article. I’m a left-leaning Hispanic civil libertarian who disagrees partially with Ron Paul on immigration. However, I wholeheartedly support him as the only candidate in either major party who will bring an end to U.S. imperialism right away. Obama-speak won’t do it. Hillary will continue playing Napoleon. The only change Obama is interested in is taking more change out of our pockets for big business that is controlling the Democratic Party. Look at how much Microsoft supports both parties. Ron Paul has always OPPOSED domestic spying, the Patriot Act, the Iraq conquest, the 100 U.S. foreign military bases, the racist War on Drugs, the heartless ban on medical marijuana and the big bankers’ hidden tax on low and middle class Americans through inflation and the devaluation of the American dollar. The Ron Paul Revolution is the real deal. Liberals and conservatives continue to unite behind Ron Paul.

  • Ed

I thought Fred Thompson was the professional actor.Aside from Ron Paul, the disgusting display of grandstanding by the rest to draw attention to themselves by interrupting, laughing and cutting down their opponents made me see who these people really are.I hope the good people of N.H. can see it too,but unfortunately TV and other media have already conditioned us to be entertained and not to understand.

  • Tanya

Ron Paul is an extraordinary man. He should be treated as a National Treasure!

  • Mike Bellman

Ron Paul can’t do good or bad if no one gives him time to speak or debate. He’s on the stage to speak. Not to sit there.

  • Suraya Esau

I live in New Zealand. I watched the debates yestersday. The most sane person was Ron Paul. He didn’t get a chance to speak enough but when he did he was profound. If change is what America wants then Ron Paul is your man. This is the only American leader that I know of in recent history who is able to put his foot in other people’s shoes. He showed humbleness, integrity and by golly TRUTH. He spoke truthfully and brought world issue to the core. His counterparts are not good listeners at all. They can only mock and fabricate the truth to sell themselves. I ask all Americans to vote for RON PAUL. He will seriously bring peace and tranquility to the world. Even Bin Laden will listen to a man with such integrity….VOTE NOW! AMERICA

  • GI Joe

Seems that people are more interested in great 30 sec soundbites instead of great principles and ideas.

It’s obvious that the DC Gang and the media are against Ron Paul because he is for America and Americans. They are doing everything in their power to undermine his efforts to save America.

    First choice OBAMA.
    Second choice, Ron Paul.
    This is a statement,
    and a wake-up call.

All the other candidates, other than Ron Paul, are making promises, but they are not saying how they are actually going to fulfill those promises. The reason for that is because they can’t tell us.

The big question is what are all the other candidates going to do about the collapse of the dollar…they don’t even bring it up, much less know enough to say what they would do.

All the promises in the world will do little good if the entire foundation of our economy collapses.

    VOTE RON PAUL…SAVE THE COUNTRY!

  • Mark G.

He will do very well, but the polls are rigged to thwart his positive message of peace, he will get ten percent, and then mysteriously the other folks go by him. It baffles me that we are stupid enough to trust these fools who hijacked america.

He should win if boots on the ground amount for anything. I guess it only does if you are a card carrying member of the CFR.

    re: 10thzodiac

I just watched the 1st couple of hours of Michael Badnarik’s Constitution class earlier today. Per Badnarik and believed by me, the solution to our loss of liberty is education.

    If everyone understood…
    that our life, liberty and property are what each of us owns;
    that the founders obviously understood this as evidenced by the Constitution, especially the due process clause of the 5th amendment;
    that socialism is the antithesis of self-ownership, substituting ownership by the collective;
    that the U.S. government has implemented, to some degree each of the 10 planks Marx laid out as necessary conditions for establishing a communist government;

Maybe people like Lauren Canario, Ed and Elaine Brown and yes… Ron Paul, wouldn’t look like radicals anymore, but like the patriots they are. And maybe, just maybe, we wouldn’t be too late in trying to prevent irreversible (short of armed rebellion) facism from taking hold. Or, are we already too late?

Dear Homeland Security – my name is Brian Jones and I live near Davis, California. That should be all you need to keep track of me. And yes, I do have my papers in case the brownshirts want to see them. I AM still trying to reverse the trend away from liberty through PEACEFUL means.

    10thzodiac and Brian Jones:

Men are not naturally inclined toward revolution, it is usually induced by circumstantial misery which serves as the catalyst of revolts, germinating the seeds that were planted in our land decades ago.

While I, of course, do not advocate violent revolution/protest, I do advocate that we must resist the various actions of a rogue, statist government otherwise we will find ourselves in a time where the ability to resistance will not be open to the People. It is well known that people are not naturally inclined toward revolution or disobedience; it is normally thrust upon them due to times of tyrannical distress and overt misery.

The point should be to divert the possibility that such a time will ever come to this Nation. It is becoming obvious that the ability of the People to redress their grievances has been, for all intents and purposes, all but nullified by the government. We must however, consider the State of this Union in which we now live if we are to distinguish between the proper execution of the powers that have been entrusted in those we have chosen to govern, and the improper execution of those powers. We must be aware of the instruments of tyranny which this government is in the process of creating, and the implementation of those instruments are being processed despite the outrage of many who view such actions as a direct threat to Our Nation.

The view of the present state and condition of this government is abundantly sufficient to convince any person that we are no longer living under the Rule of Law as enumerated within Our Constitution. While Justice prevailed in this Nation, and those entrusted with the faithful discharge of their duties to uphold the Law of the Land and did execute their duties within the bounds of the Law, We, The People, were obligated to conscientiously obey. However, the current state of slavish submission to a growing and openly blatant tyranny is proof that the question of blind obedience is no longer an option for the People of this Nation. We, The People, must no longer assist in our own ruin and the ruin of this Nation just to please and gratify the order that is now instituted over us, nor should we shirk the responsibility that resides within us as a People.

It is, without doubt, the purpose, and indeed the design of civil government to protect men in their Liberty and not to deprive that Liberty or take away their Freedom; in fact the primary purpose of Our Government was to protect men in the enjoyment of Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness.

It should then follow that tyranny and the power to usurp or arbitrarily abridge the Rights, Liberty and Freedom of man is inconsistent with and subversive to the very design of government. In view of that Purpose of Government, any contrived authority of a tyrant or tyrannical government is, therefore null and void. No authority, no government, no president can, rightfully or justly, be authorized, for any reason; to impose any form of tyranny upon any freeman within this Nation; otherwise they forfeit the right to govern the People.

When the People find themselves set upon by a government, which no longer abides by the Law of The Land, by the Contract between the government of consent and the consent of the governed, then it is the undoubted Right and Duty to throw off that bond and assert their Natural and Unabridged Right of Liberty. The question arises then; do the People have sufficient power and strength to maintain their ground in defending their Just Rights against their oppressors? In the present circumstances, that ability can be called into doubt due to the overwhelming forces of the government, which would be called to bear against the People and the Rights of the People.

Nevertheless, it is Our Indispensable Duty, if there are no other means of redress, to renounce all submission to the government that seeks to oppress us and to enter into the Compact of Freedom with those of like mind and heart to defend this Nation against those who would seek to destroy the very foundations upon which this government was founded.

It is much easier to turn aside from any responsibility that Our Liberty requires of us and allow the sense of the ruin and destruction that those in power would bring upon those who stand for Freedom and the Restoration of this National Republic however, it is nevertheless important that there are some who are willing to make the sacrifices necessary to secure that which has been lost over the decades. Should it not concern each of us to stand fast in Liberty and to strive to gain victory over every aspect of tyranny that now plagues this Nation?

Below is a response from a friend after reading responses to my posts here. Enjoy

“The middle class will never revolt. Revolution is a game of the elite and the job of the poor. When the government can no longer satisfy the “entitled” classes in the cities, they will boil out of the metropolis+es and be slaughtered in the rural areas. At that time the middle class may take up arms against the ruling elites who have stood back and watched all this from on high. The side that the police and military come down on will most likely win.”

“Been waiting for the revolution all this time and now I’ll be too old to enjoy it!!”
