The Hobbit Gets The Greenlight, Peter Jackson Will Produce

According to reports, The Hobbit has finally got the greenlight and production is set to being immediately. The issues Peter Jackson had with the studio have apparently been resolved and he will be involved with the film and sequel. Yep, there’s going to be a sequel too!
However, Jackson won’t be directing the film but will be the Executive Producer. There’s currently a search for a director with Jackson saying in a recent press release,
“I’m very pleased that we’ve been able to put our differences behind us, so that we may begin a new chapter with our old friends at New Line. ‘The Lord of the Rings’ is a legacy we proudly share with Bob and Michael, and together, we share that legacy with millions of loyal fans all over the world. We are delighted to continue our journey through Middle Earth. I also want to thank Harry Sloan and our new friends at MGM for helping us find the common ground necessary to continue that journey.”
So, there’s no director. There’s also no script until the writer’s strike has finished, so don’t expect the film to be in theatres until at least 2010.
What are your thoughts? Would you have preferred Jackson to direct the film?
