5,000 Year Old Limestone Sculpture Smashes Records and Sells For $57.2 million

An 8cm high Guennol Lioness has broken all records for the highest price paid for a sculpture at an auction. The rare 5,000 year old white limestone sculpture was snapped up by an English buyer for a staggering $57.2 million.

Picasso’s ‘Tete de Femme’

The sculpture was up for auction at Sotheby’s in New York last week. The sculpture’s record sale saw the most paid for an antique, beating the $29.1 million for Picasso’s ‘Tete de Femme’ and $28.6 million for the 2,000 year old bronze figure ‘Artemis and the Stag’.
