How Important is DivX and Xvid on the Xbox 360 or Sony PS3 to you?

DivX and Xvid

With the recent news that Xbox 360 owners can now play DivX and Xvid files via their games console thanks to the latest update, I would like to know how important DivX and Xvid support is to you.

I have watched films for years on my PC and these days DivX and Xvid is massively important for great looking videos at small file sizes, but do you find this important for your games console.

So tell us: How Important is DivX and Xvid on the Xbox 360 or Sony PS3 to you?

    People that use DivX/Xvid playback already have some kind of setup to play the content.

    I have an original Xbox with XBMC which is close to the ultimate media center, especially for the price. Plays all media streaming from my PC. The only draw back is XBMC can’t play 720p or higher resolution content because there’s no enough processor power in the box. If you don’t have a media center that plays divx or xvid then the update to a major bonus. Streamin content is the only way to do things. But if you have something as advanced as XBMC then the 360 isn’t going to replace that completely.

    Hopefully MS can add subtitle and x264 support and offer better media organization, then I can FINALLY get rid of my orginal Xbox!

    I think if Microsoft wants to claim their console as a real media hub, then the divx support seems like a logical evolution of capability.

    I had to always use Transcode360 to transcode videos from my computer to the console. Now i can just throw all the videos on my usb hdd and watch them effortlessly.

    I also think that if the ps3 had supported, but the 360 didn’t, that would equal quite a loss in sales for people looking for the ultimate media hub.

    Personally, i love the new support. The more consoles and devices to support divx, the more widespread the divx format will be used.

    One of the major advantages of chipping the old XBOX (apart from running copied games) was the DivX support.. with this now removed and the XBOX LIVE ban threat constantly looming over head modding the 360 looks a lot less enticing.. good move by M$.. you gotta learn to bend to public pursuasion a little..

    I personally will not be using my XBOX 360 to watch DivX as like Devise said “already have some kind of set-up to play the content” but I welcome it none the less.. I wonder what else M$ may offer in the future P2P app’s (ha!)..

    I wanted it on my xbox 360, sold it 2 weeks ago and got the 60 gig ps3. Without it how can you call it a media center or media hub? Its needed, liek car radios now have to have MP3 playback..

    Very important!!!

    I use my PS3 as a media player for hundreds of video files that I have downloaded from the web. Since most of the files are divx or xvid I have to convert them. This is a very time consuming process.

    i hadent even heard of DivX until rumors of it for the xbox update came around, i know what it is now but in not one of thoses guys who spend a lot of time downloading illegal copies of movies in DivX format, so this really doesnt matter to me. To tell the truth i hardly ever use my 360 to play dvd’s.

    Simply answer is its invaluable.
    My PC is in a downstairs room and I would have to bring the whole thing upstairs to watch video content on my widescreen tv. I looked into wireless media streaming solutions about 6 months ago, watched several product reviews online and it looked as if I’d had to spend around £200 to get a decent streamer.
    The only issue I have is the noise of the 360, which is still very poor even compared to a knackered 4 year old pc but at least now I don’t have to move equipment up and down stairs.
