James Franco, Emile Hirsch and Josh Brolin Join ‘Milk’

Gus Van Sant’s biopic Milk is set to get three new recruits in the shape of Josh Brolin, Emile Hirsch and James Franco. The three are in final negotiations to appear alongside Sean Penn for the film, which follows the story of Harvey Milk, the US’s first openly gay elected official who was assassinated in 1978.

Emile Hirsch is set to play a gay rights activist called Cleve Jones, an intern and close ally of Milk’s who later went on to found the NAMES Project AIDS Memorial Quilt. James Franco will play Scott Smith, Milk’s campaign manager and lover. Finally, Brolin will be playing Dan White, Milk’s rival politician and supervisor who shot Milk and San Francisco Mayor George Moscone to death at City Hall.

Shooting starts in January in San Francisco with Michael London, Dan Jinks and Bruce Cohen producing the screenplay written by Dustin Lance Black.
