Johnny Depp To Become Public Enemy In New Crime Film?

Johnny Depp’s latest role in the blood-filled ‘Sweeney Todd’ screams ‘Oscar’ and rightfully so, it’s a fantastic movie but surely Depp has had his fill of fake blood? Apparently not as the star is rumoured to be teaming up with producer-director Michael Mann for a film based on the ‘Depression-era crime wave’.

Director Mann has been looking to create a screen adaptation of the nonfiction book “Public Enemies: America’s Greatest Crime Wave and the Birth of the FBI, 1933-34” by Brian Burrough’s for a while now, with Leonardo DiCaprio previously attached. Now DiCaprio is off on Shutter Island for Scorsese, it seems that Depp is standing up to the plate.

Depp was originally signed on to star in Warner/Initial Entertainment’s ‘Shantaram’ as well as ‘The Rum Diaries’ but with both films postponed Depp has a large opening in his schedule.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Depp and Mann are set to have a meeting this week to discuss the possibility of Depp signing on to the movie. It is said that Depp has his eye on the role of bank robber John Dillinger.

This movie has huge potential, especially if Depp climbs aboard. Along with Mann and Kevin Misher, the executive producers for the film will be none other than the legendary Robert De Niro and his partner Jane Rosenthal.

If all goes well, the film should start shooting in Chicago in March.
