HONEY beats over-the-counter medicines at treating kids’ coughs,

A new research claims that Honey beats over-the-counter medicines at treating kids’ coughs.

It’s said that a dose of buckwheat honey before bedtime out-performed common cough suppressant DM in tests on 105 youngsters aged between two to 18.

The natural syrup was better at easing the severity and frequency from upper respiratory infection. It also gave kids and parents a better night’s sleep.

The children taking DM were not much better off than those given nothing at all.

The study team in Hershey, Pennsylvania, said that “We hope medics will consider the positive potential of honey as a treatment. It’s a legitimate and safe alternative.”

Honey is not recommended for children under the age of one. Buckwheat honey is a dark variety that tends to have more compounds associated with honey’s antioxidant properties, the researchers said. In addition, they said honey can sooth the throat and thus help control coughing.
