Halo 3 Trash Talk on Fox News: none over 18 playing mature rated game

Halo 3 Trash Talk

I love playing Halo 3 (well until I gave away my 360 for breaking down), the game is amazing and one fact is true…you will get banter with people from other countries which can turn in to racist talk.

This is just how a small proportion of the gamers are, but in the video below you can see a news report made by Fox News. What’s interesting is not the fact that they are talking a load of racist comments and swearing, but they all look under 18 and some even under the 15 age mark that Halo 3 is rated at.

Why are their parents letting them play a mature rated game?

So does this show that some parents not getting involved in anything their children are doing until its way too late?

turn team chat on so you can’t hear the other team…

Its Parental responsibility, Besides, I have Halo 3 and xbox live and I hardly ever hear any of this (whith the exception of a few F bombs and other small common curses like S… and D… other than that I think it is fine, and it’s not Halo, It’s Xbox live in general, this happens among most others, It occurs the most here because it is more popular. Mute your mic or turn voice off if it bothers you, then play the game

  • Matt

I am glad to see a news article that doesnt blame game publishers for these problems. It is and always has been up to the parents. There are game ratings for a reason. M ratings shouldnt be played by children because of the game content, yet parents still let them play. I am an adult and I admit there are major issues with people saying racial or sexual things online to children, but when it comes down to basically being a nameless / faceless person…people have no manners. Parents, you are in control. Watch what your children are playing and who they are talking to. If anything…use mute!

  • GAWD

Letting your underage kids play Mature games should be countered with a 500$ fine, and go up in increments of 500$ each offense.

  • James

im 16 and dont do anything rude online, its the parents fault for not listening in on their kids now and then.

  • Stephen B

Like Austin S said you can mute your mic to keep from hearing the other team if it bothers you.

  • Timmy

You do know you can mute people and file complaints? It’s really not that hard to do. And if everyone is so up in arms about the language of others, you would think that blasting someone’s head off would be a more sensitive issue. But I guess you liberal c**ts just have nothing better to do than f**k yourselves.

  • daz

lol wtf whenever they were talking smack there mic icon wasnt even showing that they were talking, this is all staged! u have to press UP on the D-pad fag! this vido is just blag

  • Sue & Tim

If a parent cannot read the mature rating on the FRONT of the halo 3 game they have no right being a parent. If your to lazy to monitor what your child does, and who they talk to then go get mario brothers and pick up a parenting book.

First of all, it’s the parents fault for being stupid and letting/buying their underage kids play M rated games. Second, you aren’t forced to listen to the people. Third, report them or if your going to be a baby about it don’t go on Live at all.

Finally, Fox doesn’t deliver a genuine nature of Xbox: Live and therefor its misleading for everyone with this stupid report.

    Fox News = Failure

  • Chris

I wonder if those parents who didn’t know how to use the parental controls on thier Xbox 360 realized THAT THEY COULD FIND THE INFORMATION IN THE MANUAL THAT CAME WITH THE CONSOLE?

  • Mike

That was absolutely ridiculous, trying to bring xbox live down… “A boy was molested in Missouri after meeting on xbox live. Of course they just mention negative aspects and nothing else, may the media burn. Mute buttons FTW!

  • Oli Barker

What a joke, there is multiple choices of settings when you make an account: pro, underground etc etc underground is namely for the trash talkers so majority are on there. Simple solution do not go on underground? Yeah so what I hear that stuff everyday on halo but I chose underground so whats the problem? poor review on the XBL. Do a report on things that matter, cry children.

  • deiuos

    thats hilarious

  • bugg

Most of the racist trash talk come from the kids…

  • bugg

Fox needs to do more researh on the subject the kids are not so innocent. This article is BS

  • Chris

So, what’s your point? Are you blameing the game or parents? It says 17+ right on the front of the box!
Obviously the parents don’t care. Like the one parent who said she knew it had parental controls but, was too lazy to try to figure them out.
All she had to do was a simple google search “parental controls xbox” The 3rd link down (http://tech.yahoo.com/gd/parental-controls-limiting-access-to-your-xbox/153062) explains all.
Many people like myself have a great time playing and choose my online friends wisely.

  • Hek7iC

i loled at this. wtf is anyone supposed to do. the joy of xbl is that you can say this stuff without getting in trouble. its a way to vent and just have fun.

  • Gary Ricker

This is so dumb…..Its rediculous to live in this time and not know about this….its been around since online gaming has been around and the news is just now starting to cover it? Wow…The media is just dumb….They should get over themselves and do news that matters

  • Nate Exploder

    I agree with Austin.
A big thank’s,as well as a big F**k you to Fox News. It’s good to see the news bring this subject to the attention of parents though,…regardless of how half-arsed it was delivered. Sure took ‘em some time to get this info out about how an online community can be,better late than never though. Way to stay on the ball
By “half_arsed”,I simply meant that, although this wasn’t just another one of your direct attacks on video games,..or the gaming community, they still managed to point out the negatives without bringing much attention to how the whole thing could be avoided in the first place. They sudjested (although it sounded a little rhetorical) that they just do away with the voice option all together, and they really just hinted at the ability to mute the other players they are playing with. They really didn’t go “in-depth” as to how a parent could set up the parental controls either,…much less provide a link to those instructions.
Thank’s for telling parents about the “problem” though,Fox. Now,maybe some of the 10 year old children out there won’t have other 10 year olds screaming profanities and racism at ‘em. Halo 3,specifically,…has an option to allow a player to single out an individual they are playing with, and mute them so that you no longer hear what they are saying.

Anyway,I’ll try to help you guys out a bit and point you in the direction of the Family settings (and a couple other usefull tools)you’re looking for. http://www.xbox.com/en-US/support/familysettings/console/xbox360/consolefamilysettings.htm

    http://www.xbox.com/en-US/support/familysettings/live/xbox360/familysettings-communications.htm

Hope I didn’t forget anything, but hey…I’m just tryin’ to fill in some of the blanks that Fox News likes to leave out.
On a side note,I would bet that at least a couple of those kids in that video weren’t even old enough to be playing Halo 3….Hmmm…

  • jason

i think this shit is funny kuz im a kid like that i hate niggers that play the game kuz all they do is talk shit people who get shit talked deserve it espesially the blacks

  • jason

    WHITE POWER

  • yana

    the game is 18+
if you don’t want your 12 year olds hearing that
then don’t buy them the game….

  • ricky

this is retarded. its not like that at all sure there is swearing but halo 3 is rated M. which means 18 and up. i play halo and its not all super racist like they make it out to be.

  • Christian

I hear a lot of foul language and trash talking, but not so much with racial slurs. If I find someone annoying or offensive, I just mute them and leave negative feedback. (or file a complaint depending on the degree of what they do)

  • Matthew

I’m 14 and I play halo online, to be totally honest its not that bad, any kid who gets drawn into speaking bad language or whatever because they hear some idiot do it I agree shouldn’t play because they are clearly to imature to handle it. But to all the parents out there, if your kids are mature enough and don’t draw into peer presure there should be no problem.

  • Cameron Thrasher

You know, I can understand that Fox wants to do a report on trash-talking that’s fine, but they’re only recording the worse stuff. Stuff that’s not commonly said on Xbox Live. I would love it if someone didn’t do a biased report, documentary, etc. on video games. Pretty much every report on video games magnifies every bad thing and barely says anything about the good things.

  • Mr. Whenchester

I play halo 3 online all the time. and i never hear any of that racism. i have heard a few jew cracks. and the f bomb. also if you handed an adult a controller they would figuere out how to change the parental controll settings eaisly

  • http://chaoticcheetos.spruz.net/ Chris Cole

They act like Halo is the only game on xbox live that has trash talk. Almost every game can be played on live. Besides, I also play PC games that are online (Counter Strike: Source) and there is so much more trash talk that you wouldnt believe it. Also, ive heard kindergardners with language that is just as bad as the people on xbox live, and they learn it from their siblings or parents.

  • Josh Bryce

I guess Fox is sponsored by Sony.

  • Damien

well, I myself am 14 years old, and i have played the game for many hours
society has to accept that there are people out there who are just trying to be tough on xbox live and cause trouble.
I hear so much of this exact kind of trash talk every day that i play it. It is so common, i just brush it off. Hell, i tease those bastards, i tease them. They are weak, they are very weak, its quite amusing in fact.

This is the age of technology, and although not too many good things can come out of it as far as smack talk, like i said, society needs to accept it. I am not mean whatsoever on xbox live, i play the game for fun, which satisfies me.

    Have Fun Playing!

  • daz

lol wo this isnt a real video its staged look at my previous post, u can clearly see that when there “trash talking” there mic’s dont move on screen, and there playing social coz the icon shows that u have to press up on the D-pad to talk, which they clearly didnt press up as you can see

  • Nathan

hahahaha wow, yea i have played xbl for about five years.. in those five years i have never really heard any of that stuff. yes i have heard some of it but not that extream, are you sure you didin’t hire anyone to say that on a mic? yes it is up to the parents to protect their kids from the bs that is said on xbl.

  • halogamer15

im a 15 year old kid that plays halo 3 for a long time every day personally i think that disabling the chat on an xbox dosnet help me because i like to here my team mates say where the people are on the map but ive never herd any racial slurs that bad in this vid and if any one ever gets to annoying i mute them simple as that

  • Gary Ricker

Someone said something about a fine for letting underaged kids play M rated games….there are several flaws in that….An M rated game is suggested at 17+….That is a very personal matter. A lot of these things are said by these kids and I honestly think that it stems from not being taught proper sportsmanship….This is a game and thus should be treated as much and good sportsmanship is one of those things that should be observed and with that being said, there are some 13 and 14 year olds I’ve played with (now 19…Started playing Halo a long long time ago) that are more mature than people who are older than me….Maturity is all in how well someone deals with things, not how old they are

  • HMMM

This is… Ridiculous, the idea of XBL is to game with others not to game by yourself or just with friends… its to meet new people. of-course you shouldnt tell someone you met on live your exact location… they are implying that XBL is bad and you shouldnt communicate with each other. If someone does give out exactly where they live thats just Ignorant, and personally i think the parents are to blame for that if you know your child is talking to others worldwide then you should atleast remind them not to Do taht! and about the trash talking..People talk like taht everyday There will always be verbal insults. on XBL or not…

    GAME ON!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • WOW

You people keep complaining, or rather stating that people under the age of 18 shouldnt play Mature rated games. Rated M means you have to be 17+ to buy it alone. im 14 years old if i was not allowed to buy M games with a parent then why does the store sell them to you they obviously are guessing that your parents are not going to play the game… soo please stop saying that “kids” or people under 17 shouldnt play M games its not like you guys didnt play T games when you were 10 years old… God and i hate how they are using halo 3 as an example almost everother online multiplayer game people trash talk.
Seriously its like saying hey kid you cant see this Rated R movie because your under the age of 17 with your parent
and besides gaming is becoming more and more popular its not like this is going to do anything…

  • WHAT?!

Bugg i completely disagree without most of the trash talk does not come from the “kids”. Thats a completely ridiculous thing to say… i have had my share of hearing 17 and up do their trash talking.
And you cant blame the parents for trash talk…. your parents cannot control everything you say…

  • zeb

holy hell shut the fuck up you bitchs, ITS A GAME, a little trash talk is all. Like anyone takes it serious or gives a shit, get over it, let a good thing be!

  • i love trash talking

Trash talking over XBL is funny, if you don’t like it theres a MUTE option so use it.
I love when americans take the piss out of my english accent with thier witty remarks. Its just as funny for them when I or other people do it back, some people take it too seriously, just relax, have fun, it is a game after all…

  • stnkye

there is noone of this going on. i have played 1200+ games and never hear anything this bad. fox news… you do realize there is a REAL WAR TO COVER RIGHT???

  • Embarrassing.

WOW really???? Come on, really? First off, I cannot believe they are bashing only Halo 3. Every FPS on the xbox market that has online capabilities is like this! Second, They are complaining about children hearing a ton of foul language. It’s the internet WHAT’S NEW!? I work at GameStop and we are REQUIRED to ask for I.D. for people who buy M rated games and if parents come in to buy their children these games we are REQUIRED to tell them about the potentials of Xbox Live. The parents are at fault for these problems NOT Xbox Live, NOT Bungie (the makers of the Halo series), Not any other company. FOX, I despise you.

  • Austin S

Just a response, something I forgot to mention, I am 14 1/2 years old (In a few days) an my mom doesn’t mind buying this for me, she knows I am mature for my age and knows I am responsible. I hear some of this stuff, and I think the cursing is fine (I mean it’s in campaign too, so parents who bought it this shouldn’t be a problem, Look on the back of the case!!!!! It says Why it is rated what it is)But I cannot stand racist chatter, it just chills me, I mute and report on all racist chatter (if resonable, not 100% of the time) and I mute the person. My mom knows the kind of stuff they say on live, I make her stand in there and listen every now and then, so that one day she doesn’t come in and get suprised because people just so happen to be swearing/racially yapping their heads off in that particular game, she knows what I do to them, actually, I might show her this vid, shes heard worse.

  • Austin S

And for those of you who said its funny, joke trash talking is, trash talking for no reason other than you feel like is just call being inconsiderate, GROW UP!!!!!

  • Austin S

And just another thing, People who think trash talking is funny and Especially you jason GROW UP!!!!! Joke trash talking is okay But real trash talking because you think is funny is not, its called inconsideration!!!!! And racism is a joke too! Everyone is human, although slightly varied in culture. So you too. GROW UP!!!!!!!!!

wow people dont know who to blame for problems no more first it was rock then movies then tv now video games fucking society

  • Dukoo

God’s sake, STFU! I have barely ever heard racist comments or whatever they say we have “heard”.

  • Todd

Has anyone ever heard the expression, “ignorance is not an excuse.”? Well, pretty much the generation that thought of that saying is the generation that the parents interviewed are a part of. Yes, that saying came from their generation. So why don’t they follow their own advice. “I had no idea that parental controls were available.” Well, dumbasses, that’s because you bought you kid the console and a mature rated game and then let him/her hook it up and walked away without paying attention to what was going on. Maybe you should look it up in the manual that comes with the console. Do you honestly think that microsoft isn’t going to cover their asses on this to avoid lawsuits from biased reports like this? Wake up people!! The world isn’t perfect, you should have figured that out by now, but that doesn’t mean that ignorance is an excuse.
