Gave My Xbox 360 Away: Repair is just too much hassle

By: Daniel Chubb | November 26, 2007 | 36 Comments

Gave My Xbox 360 Away

Over the weekend my brother came over and took my Xbox 360 away, why you might ask. Well it’s simple; I am fed up with the crashing and 3 red lights.

I have tons of games which will be given away as Christmas presents and I also own a PS3 and Wii, so that’s where my attention will go now.

I did love the 360, but I cannot be dealing with a faulty product that was sold with a over heating fault…also with many gamers writing comments on PR saying they have had many 360’s after repair, I am just cutting losses and moving on with my other 2 consoles.

    “Lazy American’s”

I have had the RRoD twice, it took 3 weeks to get back both times and the coffin was over nighted to me. Great blogg superlazy person. I bet you weigh 290 pounds fat lazy american.

  • Paul

    Foolish

I had the console 10 months before i got the RRoD, funnily enough the same week i purchased Halo 3, spent 5 minutes on xbox.com raising a hardware return call, printed out the UPS sticker, contacted UPS to come pick it up from my office, waited 4 weeks till it was returned in fully working order.
No hassle, no cost. True the console was sold under-developed but the free extended warranty and the problem free return process made up for it.

  • Will

No, I think he’s just kind of stupid. This is obviously a slanted…biased…bunch of bullshit to fan the flames of hate and rile the PS3 owners to charge. And Daniel,(author of article that is…) you are an idiot, and I BET your fat.
Just my three cents…your new replacement would have been the improved version, but your not deserving of one anyways.
Happy to not see you and your like on Live anyways.

  • Phat Yank

    @Daniel

Stop using our internet or I’ll eat you. Stupid foreigner.

  • slice

MS should have spent an extra perfecting the hardware and ironing out the reliability issues considering they’re now behind Wii anyways. Rushing out the system for the 1 year headstart was pointless.

  • Paul

i dunno Slice, haven’t seen any sales figures for worldwide markets since these http://n-europe.com/news.php?nid=11202 which have the 360 edging it, although more than likely the Wii will rule this xmas and leave the other 2 behind, until GTAIV that is.
Good point about the early release though, anyone else think that the 360 would of come out on top had M$ kept the console in testing for a few more months?

  • jeff

    buy ps3 u idiot.it has 1 p.c hardware problem.

  • Mornelithe

American’s may be fat, and they may be lazy, but we can still wipe every worthless human off the face of the planet with a push of a button.

  • vin

The issue is not with the cost of getting it replaced. It is with the fact that he has to go through all that for a system that should work properly. Luckily he has a PS3. Go Sony!!!!

  • Daniel

Well guess what, I live in the UK, I am far from fat and I guess you are happy buying products that break…or maybe its not your money that brought your 360.

  • Will

@Vin, Another true American…(Stupid that is…)Don’t ever back your own country for anything, keep giving America away, the rest of the world is freely enjoying your hard work.

  • otakugamergt

    this site = zero credibility

  • madalex

Mornelithe, a typical response from a fat yank.

Is that the same arrogance that thought the Iraqis would just roll over ?

4.5 years later and 4000 US troops dead.

Your doing a good job guys !!!!

  • cjhike

Daniel I hear you. I got rid of my 360 about four months ago and picked up a PS3. It was not with out regret that I parted ways with it, however I was just not interested in sending it in over and over to be fixed.

I am not a fanboy of either system, it really does not matter which one I have as long as it works when I want to use it and the PS3 has never let me down.

I really do not understand the the mentality of the 360 fanboy, sure the 360 has more games currently however in the future this will even out, and the console just keeps breaking.

  • slice

@ Mornelithe, YOU can’t push a button and destroy anything, your government can, and so can russia’s, china’s, japans, etc…

@ Will, too bad the 360 is made in china huh?

  • spill

    Good for you Daniel!!

How can people support and defend a company like Mircosoft when the continue to sell a defective product?

Would you continue to by the same make of car if the engine seized every 3 months?

    People are weird.

  • Will

@slice, unfortunately, pretty much all the manufacturing from every countries products are “manufactured” in China, just like the P$3, the Wii, and the 360. It’s hard to beat slavery (CHINA) when you’re trying to compete in a world market.
It’s where the unit is designed and where the profit ends up that actually determines it origin.
The poor workmanship is in all aspects of the industry, I know, I work in it every day.

  • TK

Sounds like the brother is the smart one. He’s going to make a call, get a return box, drop it off the fed ex store and wait 3 weeks for a working 360.

Doesn’t sound too hard to me. Sure the guys a fool. But why bring race into the issue. Especially when you have no idea.

At least Microsoft owned up to the issue and backed its product.

  • Anthony

Haha @ Daniel. I feel sorry for you if you consider having to send your hardware back TWICE taking six weeks in total “normal” and/or acceptable. What low, low standards you have. I bet you way 90 pounds and eat trash out of gutters for dinner. You may love your Xbox but you’re a moron if you consider that kind of crap acceptable. Get out your pickaxe, another shill for the MS off-world mining colony has been found. ;-)

You fanboys AMAZE me. Such loyalty to a company that loves nothing but your $$. I plan on buying an Xbox but I’m waiting till this crap is under control. Two broken consoles in 1-2 years is TOTALLY unacceptable. I guess if your TV, computer, cable box, cell phone, dishwasher, car’s engine, Ipod, etc. all broke twice a year you’d be Ok with that too? Buuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuullshyte!

  • Anthony

Oops, when I said “Haha @ Daniel” I meant the dummy who posted about Fat Americans, not the blogger who rightly is pissed about his busted Xbox(s)

  • Jake

    @Paul: Foolish.

If your car or cell phone broke down, and they took it in – hassle free – for four weeks, would you be happy? No car, no phone for something you paid for!!! You paid for the xbox to work – you did not pay to have it missing for weeks. So how does hassle-free make up for it? I’m sure you went to your friend’s house to play on the Xbox there for those weeks you were without one, but I bet his/hers had to be sent to be repaired as well. Not having something that you regularly use and that you paid hundreds of $$$ for – is always a hassle.

  • B

Good point spill i’d be so over it if it was my car with rrod all the time. so why should you dickheads say its ok for it to breakdown all the time ” cause its got a special 3 year….. whatever the product u love is bull.

  • One

    Wow I don’t get people.

If you pay for anything you expect it to work. Period. Saying a product is ok that it breaks because your only out 3 weeks playing time is just dumb.

My roommate pre ordered Halo 3 just to have his 360 RROD two days before it came out. Was he like oh its cool I won’t be able to play Halo 3 for three weeks? No he was pissed because he paid money to play games and he couldn’t.

You buy a 360 to play games when you want to play games. RROD is unacceptable.

  • Paul

    @Jake

I got 12 months of play out my 360, the one with a known defect, before it had to go back, as I said before; 4 weeks and no cash spent later I had it back with known defect removed. My housemates car broke down 2 months after he received it, Volvo S40, the car had an unknown manufacturer defect which the warranty didn’t cover and he had to pay. When i bought my SPV phone back in 2004 the LCD screen cracked due to a known fault with overheating, I sent it away and didn’t receive it back for 3 months. Fair enough M$ sent out a product with a defect but that doesn’t mean every console on the market is fubar, in fact i did use my friends console while my was being fixed, a Halo 3 SE and it worked perfectly as you’d expect and no it hasn’t had to go back, as far as I can tell M$ have found the problem, given all owners an extended 2 year warranty with free pickup and delivery, sure I was without the console for 4 weeks but I’m not chained to it and I didn’t immediately go out and spend more money on a PS3. I mean look at the “dusty” PS3 case a couple of weeks back, I bet that wouldn’t of happened with the 360.

  • Bob

Wonderful made up stories. Anything to start up a thread.

  • Daniel

@bob Well my brother does have the 360, guess you have a problem understanding…its ok the world takes all sorts.

    UPDATE
And by the way, yes Microsoft are fixing it for him, but I am happy for my brother, call it an early Christmas gift…I am just fed up with a product that has so many problems…anyways I love my PS3 and Wii

  • ben

Fair play ive had 3 xbox 360′s die with RROD and this one will be my last one, once it dies ill go on to playing my PS3 too. I can already see the cr@p from the fanboys but I dont really care im 30 I have a good job I own both consoles and I enjoy them both, its just Microsoft’s offering doesnt last more then 6 months at a time, I know 7 people with 360′s and all of them have had at least 1 console go back for repair so I dont see how people can say it isnt a badly designed and faulty product. One thing I do know is I wont be buying any Microsoft console at launch date in future im going to wait and see if they have got it right next time.

  • slice

@ bob, just because your 360 hasn’t broken doesn’t mean everyone who says theirs has must be lying. I have 9 friends who own a 360 and 4 of them have had them break. 1 of those 4 had 2 break! Anyone who denies that the 360 has MAJOR reliability issues is either blind or stupid.

  • jake

    @Paul

I’m sorry to hear about your housemate’s car. But as far as I know, the Volvo case wasn’t as extensive as the Xbox. If every 3rd or 4th Volvo experienced major problems (ie. couldn’t run) within a few months, Volvo would be having serious issues: PR problems, class-action lawsuits, etc., and consumer’s shouldn’t have to put up with that crap, whether it’s covered under warranty or not. Same case with the “dusty” PS3. The article talks about one pissed off dude going to the media over his “dusty” PS3. If every 3rd or 4th PS3 stopped working because of dust problems, the PS3 would be much worse off than it is. You don’t have to go out and buy a PS3, but how many times does your Xbox have to break before you’re ready to use it as a pedestal for your PS3 or Wii? One time? Two times? I’m just saying Daniel’s point (the original post) was not foolish in giving away his Xbox – he’s got a valid point and he didn’t want to put up with his Xbox crapping out every couple months.

  • Paul

    @jake

Just to hit back. I’m yet to hear from someone who has had to send the 360 back for repair multiple times since the over heating chip problem was resolved with the better nm chips and the extended warranty. True it took M$ over a year to a) figure out what was wrong and b) issue a responsibility statement with the extended warranty as standard but it seems that a lot of posters here are acting as if everything they have ever bought has never gone wrong and continued to work indefinitely, which I’m sorry is just not true, if you can honestly say everything electronic item you have ever purchased works, continues to work, and has never once required contact to a manufacturer then congratulations you have led a charmed life indeed sir.

  • foo man ju

Nice! I’m on my 7th return and running strong! I guess I just love the free repairs and customer support. Just wish I had some lame motions sensor in my hand right now like the wee does so I could demonstrate on this screen the motion I am making towards this column at this moment. Good Xbox don’t need you!

  • Nelson

Stupid Microsoft fanboys on this thread.

There is no such thing as hassle-free replacement – the fact that you go a month without your system is a hassle. A product that breaks often should not be bought.

Of course your blind loyalty and xenophobic mentality prevents you from seeing the obvious.

Daniel made the right choice. I did the same thing a while ago, and I don’t regret it one bit. I might pick up an XBox 360 next year once they redesign the WHOLE system.

  • anothernonstory

Heck send it to me and i will send it in and have 2 360′s.

  • light

Xbox is poorly made. Only the reason it is selling well is because MS is sending brown bags to developers house. Ms is raping you upside down and fat ass american dont even know it. LOL enough said. MS Hassel free exchange is gay. Does ms gives you other console to play while yours is out ??

  • Anthony

Wow, talk about blind followers. Yes other products on the market have defects from time to time but this is a MAJOR problem. We’re talking like 30% or more of all consoles busting within a year and some other high percentage of it happening TWICE! Hell there’s like 1000s of people on #3 for crying out loud. And as for MS fixing the problem, adding extra warranty for those with the defect, problem solved… BZZZZZZZZZT wrong. They ALL have the potential to RROD. Even ones you buy right now. Even ones you get back repaired. The 360 has been through SEVERAL hardware revisions and they STILL fricking RROD. Now they’re using smaller, cooler CPU chips and it still happens. They’re saying the next revision will use smaller ATI GPUs and are hoping that should finally solve it. And when is that? Bloody August 2008 is the target! What kind of POS console needs three major revisions to solve a massive wide-spread breakdown problem since launch and takes like 3 full years after launch to do it? Assuming it IS corrected… (not holding breath)

  • Anthony

And before the fanboys start flaming cuz I actually like my PS3… Like I said, I’m planning to pick up a 360 so I can play the odd exclusive like Halo 3 or Mass Effect or Gears 2 or Fable 2 (played Gears of War and Bioshock on my PC, there’s really nothing else exclusive for 360 with any teeth) but only if this is resolved. And that’s a big IF. Until then, my PS3 has been rock solid, plays 95% of the same good games (COD4, Rock Band, Guitar Hero 3, Assassin’s Creed, NHL 08, GRAW2, Vegas, the upcoming Army of Two, Burnout Paradise, etc.) and with FREE online I might add (waiting 3 years to buy a 360 will save me $150 in online fees right there!). Plus the PS3 now has a whole crop of kickass exclusives (Uncharted, Warhawk, Ratchet and Clank, MotorStorm, Heavenly Sword, PAIN) with many more on the way. Not only has it never failed but it lives crammed in a hot entertainment center compartment running nearly 24/7 (it’s also my media center via TVersity and I frequently let it do the Folding@Home project). Never so much as crashed in a single game let alone broke. Going on 13 months now. There’s NO doubt in my mind MS released a shoddy product in a desperate attempt to gain that year head start. My advice to those unsure which to get. Buy a PS3 now that the price is down and get a 360 in a few years. Then you can play all the exclusives (only are a handful worth playing) and you’ll save piles on online fees and maybe, just maybe it will be non-defective by then.
