It looks like DreamWorks are set for a headache when Tim Burton’s adaptation of Sweeney Todd is released next month. It’s reported that the film, which currently stands as a gory R-rated musical, will prove to be quite hard to sell.
Terry Press, head of the marketing campaign for DreamWorks has admitted, “This has many niche audiences that need to be dealt with, and they don’t really cross. There are Sweeney Todd freaks, there’s a sophisticated theatregoer crowd, there are the Tim Burton fans and there are the young girls who love Johnny Depp.”
If DreamWorks think that the merging niches are the biggest problem, they’re wrong. According to director Tim Burton, the film isn’t actually finished yet. Speaking yesterday Burton claimed, “Probably in two weeks. Hopefully.”
If all goes to plan, Sweeney Todd will be released in the US on December 21.

I think this movie looks amazing. I don’t think there will be any problems as far as people not going to see it. I don’t think people are so close-minded that gore fans would completely reject the musical part and musical fans would completely reject the gore part. People are not just fans of one thing, they’re fans of one thing more than another thing.
And of course the teenage girls aren’t concerned with movie content as long as Johnny’s in it, so if nothing else, there are plenty of them out there.
Let’s hear it for Tim Burton for tackeling such a thing!
