US artist Jeff Koons

On Wednesday night at Sotheby’s Jeff Koons had is 1,600 kg sculpture sell for $23,561,000 to the Gagosian Gallery in Manhattan and although he had this record sale he still seems to be praised and slammed at the same time.

According to Reuters India, “Koons is praised as an avant-garde chronicler of commercial pop culture and slammed as a peddler of trendy, meaningless kitsch”, but I guess that anyone that smashes records will have people trying to pull them down.

His art is undoubtedly hotter now than it has ever been before after a sale like that and this price of over $23 million has been said to be Sotheby’s and rival Christie’s “most important record of the last two weeks of sales” by Sotheby’s senior contemporary art specialist, Anthony Grant.
