Reports claim that Kate and Gerry McCann are refusing to rule out the possibility of taking legal action against the Portuguese detectives for failing to find missing Madeleine. The couple could sue the police over a series of mistakes in the investigation which affected the search for Madeleine.
Speaking to Sky News, the McCann’s have said it was far too early to talk about it - their main priority is to find their daughter. Clarence Mitchell, the couple’s spokesman has said,
“Our priority is to find Madeleine, and we will continue to work closely with the police to do that. Only then some way down the road will their lawyers consider whether any other action is appropriate in any direction.”
Mr Mitchell released the above statement after Portuguese lawyers representing the couple were quoted in the papers saying that the couple may launch legal action if the Policia Judiciara decide to stop the hunt for Madeleine.
Carlos Pinto Abreu, a member of the McCann’s legal team has said that suing the police would be difficult, but it wouldn’t be impossible,
“You would have to prove that it was intentional - only if you had information that someone had said they knew where the child was and the police had taken no action. It would not be easy, but it would be possible.”
