Leona Lewis Spirit - Album Review

The long awaited album from the X Factor 2006 Winner has finally arrived. I can say one thing straight off the bat - it was worth the wait. The album begins with the smash hit Bleeding Love and sets the tone for the album.

Track two, Whatever It Takes, is a mid-tempo number again showcasing Leona’s extraordinary vocal talents. The track almost throws back to a past era when the likes of Whitney and Mariah were still the Divas on top. Will Leona follow suit?

The answer to the question lies in the following tracks on the album. Homeless is a powerful ballad which sees Leona soar up and down the scales with ease. Better in Time, with it’s sprightly piano introduction and addictive only cements the fact that Leona was the rightful winner of X Factor. The song reminds me of an Alicia Keys song, with the prominent piano and rich vocals.

Yesterday is definitely reminiscent of 1990’s Mariah but I don’t mean dated. Yesterday is another mid-tempo track with the sort of breathy lines and powerful lyrics that put Mariah on top. In all the songs on the albums Leona makes it sound so easy reaching notes that only a select few divas can hear!

Track five takes a different route completely. With an introduction Destiny’s Child would be proud of, Take A Bow is a song you’ll find it hard not to bop your head and tap your feet to.

The following tracks ensure Leona will be placed right up there with the top divas in the business. Every song on the album is a potential top 10 hit. I Will Be, Angel and Here I Am are highlights of the album, and makes you see why Leona took her time releasing this album.

More satisfying than the usual reality show album which is full of covers, Spirit is a diamond in the rough and shows Leona is a serious recording artist.

Number of good tracks: 12 out of 14

Turn To: I Will Be and Leona’s amazing cover of The First Time I Saw Your Face

Switch Off: A Moment Like This - Leona’s debut single was good, but it can’t compare with the rest of the album tracks.

Overall Verdict: A fantastic album filled with tunes we’d expect from the sultry diva. Not too many ballads, but when one comes on it feels good!
