We’re sad to report that Kanye West’s mother Dr. Donda West passed away Saturday night in Los Angeles at the age of 58.
The spokesman for the West family has said that the family respectfully asks for privacy during this time of grief,” A cause of death has not been released.”
Donda West who was known for her strong bond she shared with her son, by whose side she was often seen at parties and award shows.
Kanye West has often spoke of his close relationship with his mother, who raised him alone after her husband left when Kanye was 3 years old.
Donda was the inspiration for the song, “Hey Mama,” on Kanye West’s 2005 album “Late Registration,” in which he sings: “Hey Mama, I wanna scream so loud for you, cuz I’m so proud of you … I appreciate what you allowed for me. I just want you to be proud of me.”
Donda recently published a book about her famous son called “Raising Kanye”. Donda West writes about bringing up the future star during the years when they lived on Chicago’s south side and in Blue Island and Tinley Park.
Donda West moved to the Los Angeles area two years ago, to work as the CEO of her son’s entertainment company, Super Good, and chair the Kanye West Foundation.
In the book, co-written with journalist Karen Hunter, Donda West talks about being a single parent who proudly encouraged her son’s artistic endeavors.
Donda who was an English professor at Chicago State University before retiring and moving to California, often took young Kanye to cultural activities in the city. She also writes that she believes it was important for her son to see the world, and she brought Kanye along when she spent a year working in China.
She said that “I always listened to Kanye; sometimes parents don’t do that …If we fail to make a connection, then all the advice in the world is falling (on) deaf ears.” At the same time, she set firm standards for her son. “As I say in the book, you can’t just let a child grow up like a weed. You really have to be there.” As the chairwoman of the Kanye West Foundation, Donda West oversees her son’s philanthropic efforts, including the Loop Dreams program.
Housed at the Challengers Boys and Girls Club in south central Los Angeles, Loop Dreams teaches kids about entertainment careers and how to produce music, while requiring them to stay in school and maintain good grades. Donda said that “Loop Dreams’ is a term that Kanye came up with.”
“A loop is what a producer gets when he samples repeatedly, so you have the loop of a song. Just like kids have ‘hoop dreams’ and want to play basketball, today a lot of kids have ‘loop dreams.’ They want to rap. They want to produce music.” Loop Dreams is coming to Chicago next spring, with a training seminar for the area’s teachers.
In her book, Donda West addresses the controversies Kanye has stirred with some of his public remarks, including the statement he made after Hurricane Katrina hit New Orleans: “George Bush doesn’t care about black people.” The outspoken rapper’s mom says she is proud that he speaks his mind. She said “What I’m supportive of is Kanye thinking critically and analytically and speaking the truth as he sees it.”
Donda West was a truly Inspirational mum who supported her son and I am sure she will be missed dearly.
All our prayers are with Kanye and his family at this time.
