Upcoming Animal Crossing for Nintendo Wii going MMO route

There are not many details going around on this, but according to Edge magazine (a reputable European publication) the upcoming game Animal Crossing is going the social networking MMO route.

The Nintendo Wii game was confirmed to be heading the MMO direction by a Japanese source, although this information has not been confirmed by Nintendo.

So with no official confirmation, what do you make of this?
