Juno has definitely been one of the movies to create the most buzz this year. Thanks to this, Juno screenwriter Diablo Cody has become Hollywood’s golden girl and her schedule is filling up fast. Speaking to EW recently, Cody revealed some details about her upcoming projects.
Girly Style: Diablo started to write this ‘female response’ after seeing Superbad. The film is ‘named after the wuss version of push-up’s, [and] tells the story of some nerdy college women’. Mason Novick (Red Eye) is attached to produce the film for Universal.
Time and a Half: ‘A satire about the cult of modern-day hipsters’. Cody described the movie as ‘a generational, working stiffs kind of comedy’, inspired by films like Reality Bites and ‘those films that defined Generation X’.
Jennifer’s Body: The story follows a cheerleader who has the perfect life, until she becomes the girl from hell. She becomes possessed and finds herself killing boys in the small town she lives in. It’s up to her best friend to find a way to stop her.
The United States of Tara: Cody was picked by Steven Spielberg to write the pilot for a comedy idea he had about a woman who struggles to find a balance between her identity disorder and raising a dysfunctional family. Cody pitched her story to Spielberg over the phone at the Universal lot and has yet to meet him. Cody said, ‘Isn’t that awesome? It’s like Charlie’s Angels. So we had the call, and he said, ‘Okay, go write it.’ I walked outside and just went numb. E.T. is the first film I ever saw in the theater. I sank down to the curb and put my head between my knees.’
Burlesque: Cody was brought on to rework the musical for director Steve Antin. The film follows the story of a young woman who tried to escape a hollow past by performing in a neo-burlesque club in LA.
Diablo also told EW or her longing to one day direct, saying:
“If I were a dude, I don’t know that I’d be so eager. But I feel like I have a responsibility to try because there’s such a paucity of female directors. There are worse things you can do in life than direct a bad movie.”
