The auction at Christie’s on Tuesday night finished with a jaw-dropping overall sales total of $395 million. This total is the second highest ever achieved in fine art auctioneering. One of the highlights of the auction was a 1937 Henri Matisse painting which set a new record for the artist.
The painting was sold for a staggering $33.6 million. The Matisse work, titled “L’Odalisque, Harmonie Blueue features one of the artist’s best loved models lounging behind a bouquet set on a table.
Guy Bennett, who runs the department of Impressionist and Modern art at Christies, New York, bid on behalf of a client on the telephone and won the bidding at $30 million. Added to Christie’s buyer’s premium, the total came to $33.6 million.
The previous record set at an auction for a Matisse painting was at Sotheby’s in London this June where “Danseuse dans la fauteuil” sold for $22 million.
