Sony PS3 275,000,000 polygons per second vs Xbox 360′s 500,000,000

polygons per second

Kim Naroz left a really long comment on the post about the amount of power the developers are using form the Xbox 360 and Sony Playstation 3, he pointed out that the Sony PS3 display’s 275,000,000 polygons per second, compared to the 500,000,000 polygons per second of the Xbox 360.

My question is does this really matter?

Here is Kim Naroz’s Comment:
Someone needs to point out that the Playstation 3 can only display 275,000,000 polygons per second, compared to the 500,000,000 polygons per second of the Xbox 360.

That is the reason why games like John Madden Football 2008, NCAA Football 2008, All-Pro Football 2008, and many other games from EA Sports, 2K Sports, and so many others all run at 60 frames per second on the Xbox 360, but only 30 frames per second on the Playstation 3.

Gamespot specifically said in the review of those sports games: “The Xbox 360 versions run smoothly at 60 frames per second at 1080p resolution, while the Playstation 3 versions struggle to run at 30 frames per second at 720p resolution.”

It isn’t just sports games with that problem. Look at all the Tony Hawk Skating games, Tom Clancy Splinter Cell: Double Agent, and F.E.A.R. They have frame rates that drop below 20 frames per second on the PS3 and go into slow motion it is so bad…even though the Xbox 360 versions have very smooth framerates.

Oblivion is NOW BETTER on the Xbox 360!!!

When Oblivion was released a year later on the PS3, it used a new shader design…that had NOTHING to do with hardware technology; it was just something put into the new version of the game as a software program. The download was released for the Xbox 360 later on, but the PS3 fanboys always pointed out, “But when you compare the actual discs, the PS3 one has some advantages (although the Xbox 360 version also has advantages, and was ALWAYS rated higher).

Oblivion: Game of the Year Edition is now available for the Xbox 360, and when you now compare Oblivion on the Xbox 360 to Oblivion on the PS3, there is NO DOUBT that the Xbox 360 version is significantly better; that is why it is rated higher!

The Playstation 3 version of Oblivon is a perfect example that what this man is saying about the Hard Drive of the PS3 being used to help out with memory limitations is NOT true. Consider the FACT that the Playstation 3 version of Oblivion does NOT allow the entire world to exist in the game at the same time, like the Xbox 360 version does. This is because of the Memory Bandwidth hardware bottleneck of the Playstation 3.

Also, when it comes to RAM, the Xbox 360 certainly DOES have fundamental advantages over the Playstation 3!

For example, the CPU of the PS3 can NEVER access more than 256MB of RAM at any point. The Xbox 360 CPU is free to access up to 512MB of RAM if there was a need. With the PS3, there are plenty of times when the CPU needs more than 256MB of RAM, and the Video-RAM of the PS3 is actually using less than 256MB of RAM, which means that if the PS3 had a Unified RAM environment–like the Xbox 360’s–then that unused Video-RAM could help the CPU, like it does on the Xbox 360. OBVIOUSLY, the Xbox 360 RAM design is much more flexible; it helps developers in ways that they enjoy working with.

Plus, it’s important to remember that the original design of the Playstation 3 called for the used of TWO Cell CPU processors–each with two Threads that could Send signals to the SPE subprocessors.

However, when Sony saw the design of the Xbox 360, and they saw how much better the Xbox 360 was, then Sony was forced to redesign the Playstation 3 very quickly in a way that hurt the PS3 system. This is nearly identical to what happened with Sega and the Saturn. Sega saw how much better the original PS1 was, and they were forced to quickly redesign the Saturn in a way that used parallel processing that was difficult to work with and was more expensive. This is EXACTLY what happened with the Playstation 3.

The original design of the PS3 was not even supposed to used a GPU, because it was going to have two of the Cell CPU processors. But when Sony saw the revolutionary ATI GPU in the Xbox 360 that was Custom designed for the Xbox 360, and was 1.5 years ahead of its time (since the PC didn’t see similar Unified Shader technology until January 30, 2007), then Sony was forced to removed one of the Cell CPUs in the PS3, and instead add a Nvidia GPU. But there was NOT time to custom design the GPU, so Sony was forced to included a four-year old generic GPU in the PS3. That is why people often point out the vast superiority of the Xbox 360 GPU.

Now that the PS3 only has one 3.2Ghz Cell CPU, it means that the PS3 has only two Threads capable of Sending signals to the six SPE sub-processors running parallel. Each of those six SPE processors is capable of Receiving a Threaded signal; however, the PS3 CPU is only capable of Sending two Threaded signals. This is where the hardware “bottleneck” of the PS3 reveals itself. Programmers often say that the PS3 has two arms (CPU Threads) that are trying to juggle six balls (SPE sub-processors). Obviously, that is NOT possible, and that is why the Playstation 3 hardware is such a BIG disappointment.

With the Xbox 360, Microsoft used a much newer and better form of technology. PCs often brag about their “dual-core” CPU design. The Xbox 360 actually takes that to the next level and used a “tri-core” CPU design, with each CPU using the most developer-favored videogame processor available–the PowerPC.

The Xbox 360 is literally the exact opposite when compared to the Playstation 3 in terms of hardware design and efficiency. The Xbox 360 has three 3.2Ghz CPUs, each with two Threads capable of Sending instructions. But the Xbox 360 doesn’t the outdated parallel processing environment of the PS3. There are no “sub-processors” to worry about with the Xbox 360. The signals can be focused on CPU and GPU commands. This literally means the Xbox 360 has six arms (CPU Threads) that are being asked to juggle only two balls (GPU and CPU functions).

THAT is why the developers absolutely LOVE the Xbox 360 and can design games so much more efficiently for the Xbox 360.

THAT is why games are released so much earlier for the Xbox 360.

THAT is why the overwhelming majority of Xbox 360 games offer better graphic and online performance on the Xbox 360.

THAT is NOT going to change!

It may be easier to port a PS3 game to the Xbox 360 than it is to port an Xbox 360 to the PS3 (since the Xbox 360 is more powerful in terms of videogame performance–500,000,000 polygons for the Xbox 360 is more than the 275,000,000 for the PS3), but the Xbox 360 will continue to be the Lead Platform this generation for two reasons:

(1) Because the Xbox 360 is so much easier for developers to develop games for and experiment with new types of gameplay.

(2) Because the Xbox 360 has sold over Eight-Million more systems than the Playstation 3, and that lead continues grow by hundreds of thousands of systems each month, in terms of Worldwide Sales.

Is the manager 12 years old or what?? What do you want with this? Convince peopple that X360 is better? Guess what, you are losing your time because I’ll be here to remember everyone that they can’t trust in this site and in the “news” they spread. I hope someone creates an Internet Police to arrest those who publicise “hate-news” and Lies to promote other products!

I respect your opinion, but we post a few featured comments a day of what people have been commenting on.

These are always from both sides of debates like this, as you would see in the featured comment section, we never stick to one opinion.

Please respect other people’s views, even if they are really in-depth.

  • Mak

    What clueless idiot wrote this??

“CPU of the PS3 can NEVER access more than 256MB of RAM at any point.”

Total nonsense.. Cell has 256MB and RSX have 256MB, but both can page into the other’s pool. So is in essesence exactly the same as the 360. The only real difference, is PS3 has 256MB of significantly faster XDRam to call on, as well as the 256MB of GDDR3 (the 360 has 512 of GDDR3).

    The next laughable bit:

“Plus, it’s important to remember that the original design of the Playstation 3 called for the used of TWO Cell CPU processors–each with two Threads that could Send signals to the SPE subprocessors. BAAAHHHHAAA, did you just make this up? Pathetic…

This is pure nonsense from a VERY worried Xbox owner right now, who can see any ground Microsoft made in the first year disappear down the drain very quickly

Are you paid by Microsoft. This is ridiculous. Not once in the past week have you posted anything other than an article attacking the PS3. It’s always the same tired arguments too. I own a 360. Please explain to me why Heavenly Sword and Ratchet and Clank look better than any game I ever played on Xbox. Honestly, this site is complete garbage and it is so clear you are just trying to increase viewership to get more ad revenue. This site is the source of all fanboy arguments across the internets: CONFIRMED.

  • terrence

um… how bout we just buy all three systems LIKE ME and stop being so… annoying :D

ps3 has exclusives and xbox 360 has exclusives and the wii helps keep the pounds off :D

entertainment is entertainment little one ;) i still use my old emachine to play boggle… it is has a whopping IGP that supports dx7.1 FULLY!!! OMGH4X

Who is Kim Naroz? I mean, aside being a Microsoft fan boy/girl who’s paid by Microsoft to post misinformation on blogs?

  • Daniel

I hope Kim Naroz replies to his above featured comment to back up his claims.

    @Dan
No we are not paid by Microsoft and as you said “Not once in the past week have you posted anything other than an article attacking the PS3″

Let me show you a few (by the way I love me 360 and PS3), this is just Kim Naroz’s opinion which has been featured.

A google search shows that all he does is post comments on forums and has no credibility whatsoever.

The fact that product-reviews posts his comment shows biased, shoddy, and unprofessional journalism. Where’s the source for this information?

  • Daniel

Yes Terrence thats just what I did, its great having all 3 systems as you get the exclusives.

All three get used in my home as they are all good for different games and reasons.

    @MN
I understand where your coming from about Kim Naroz, but again he just made the featured comment section with “His Opinion”.

  • OhBoy– AGAIN??

    @ Daniel

you see, it looks like I’m not the only one with the feeling that PR are just going to far with this kind of articles, this is “The Internet” for god sake, we know it might be an awfull source of news, but why make it worse?

The articles you’ve been posting are in the best description Ridiculous and biased. I don’t want you to be Sony Fanboys, or Wii fanboys or X360 Fanboys, I just wanted some professionalism, if you want to keep with this kind of “articles” you should remove your “account” from google news.

I’m tired of this, I was a fanatic Sony fanboy some time ago, I’m hardly trying to forget that, but this is to much, I couldn’t stand that even if it was critisizing other consoles.

It’s a matter of dignity, proud and honesty.

  • Daniel

    @OhBoy– AGAIN??
Thanks for the feedback, if other people also do not want to read the featured comments then we will remove that section and not feature comments again.

So lets have a vote as it is what’s best for the user at the end of the day (That’s you people).

Who would like the featured comments section removed and no more comments being featured?

  • xp

We don’t need specs and tech talk to figure this out… Simple observation works quite well

  • foo man ju

Yes, this is pretty one sided it really does sound. Honeslty, both systems are powerfull enough to last. PS3 has the Blu Ray player, that’s it…thats trully it. My Xbox 360 does rule as far as I care. No issues here. I’ll be sure to get my ps3 for 399.00 now and watch movies on my new 52 inch lcd 1080p sony hdtv…but thats about it. You can keep snake and turismo honestly.

  • OhBoy– AGAIN??

    @ Daniel

I don’t know you Daniel, maybe you are a fantastic guy with who I’d love to drink some beers, play some games, talk, do what friends use to do, Internet makes us to distant and it’s hard to evaluate people or their interests, and it’s to easy to critisize as I’m and others are doing, shame on us all!

If you want my opinion I think that yes, opinions as “news” should be banished from PR, at least opinions from “users”, we can never have sure if what they are saying is true or not.

Video Games are suposed to be fun, I’m 26 and for me video games are becoming more political than fun, god how I miss my old days as a gamer and when “all” games were good…

I don’t hown all 3 systems, I hown a PS3 and I will buy a Wii, not a X360 because the difference between the 360 and PS3 are not enough in my opinion, but I wouldn’t mind to have them all.

Well, again, I agree that personal opinions should be banned from “news titles”, not only because they might be incorrect but also because it’s not “news”, and of course everything they do is what we see in most posts, fights and more fights…

  • Daniel

    @OhBoy– AGAIN??

I have to agree with you, news in all types is best kept separate from comments, I have removed the section from the left and will not be featuring any more comments.

The other writers did not do this, so thats the end of that as I want what’s best for the users (You).

I will be adding a list of the most commented posts or latest commented posts.

I am 30 by the way and you are right about gaming today, when I played my Commodore 64 years ago every night the graphics were bad, but the gameplay was amazing.

Now days we are spoilt with choice and great graphics.

  • terrence

polygons hmmm… why not gameplay instead of shear processing power? pit that against each other please. i still prefer tekken 4 to all other fighter games… i miss ace combat 4!!! i prefer super mario kart on the snes to all battle racers… gameplay rules. entertainment is king. thats prob why exclusives rock so much… the ability to concentrate on the game rather than “how will this look on the wii, 360 and ps3″ …all the grey matter is focused on the development for its respected console. oh well. i think i made a post like this for the whole ps vs 64 vs pc vs dreamcast back in the day… rinse and repeat until desired :D

  • Mak

The problem is, the garbage you spout here, is posted on forums by brainwashed cluesless Xbots worldwide (Microsoft must be laughing their heads off, and all the idiots they have brainwashed).

  • inty2525

Amen brother… The Playstation 3 can only display 275,000,000 polygons per second, compared to the 500,000,000 polygons per second of the Xbox 360. NUFF SAID… 360 ftw! now let’s see if the market will put up with the high defect rates… also you can keep bluray, i’ll just download HD thru FiOS, that’s the future…

  • Trevor

So how does he explain Oblivion and Dirt running better on the PS3?

The reason EA games have been better on the 360 is simple and has nothing to do with the 360 being more powerful.

ITS BECAUSE THEY WERE WRITTEN FOR THE 360 AND PORTED TO THE PS3.

The PS3 IS more powerful. Get over it and stop lying you idiots.

  • JACK

I do remember the first tech specs of the PS3 sporting 2 cells instead of a GPU, the x360′s GPU is pretty awsome in terms of design. It is just to bad that ATI is doing bad in the Graphics Card market right now.

    @Smiler Nick
I don’t have to remind you that GT5 and MG4 aren’t really system sellers in the U.S. In japan GT5 will do very well I’m sure, but I doubt that either of those titles will turn the tide to the PS3s favor. I’ve been reading some pretty disappointing things about MGS5, mostly just control issues and mediocre gameplay in the demo. That is a demo though so I’m sure those will get ironed out. If I hear anyone state Asassins Creed as a system seller though. . . probably not.
I wouldn’t say that the PS3 is doomed, I see a positive future. However, I don’t see it beating the X360 or the Wii in terms of sales, and at the current moment I can’t see either of them beating the Software attach rate of the X360 either.
Like a few other people have said: I too own all three consoles. I really don’t play them online that much Because of my job.

    @ Mak
You’re clearly the uninformed one, for the PS3′s CPU does not have any direct access to each others ram, not to say that there isn’t a work around, but from what I’ve read about the PS3′s architecture I havn’t seen away they could Get around that. Also the Speed of the ram doesn’t matter if the quantity to be held exceed what is there. you can’t load an entire 350MB level into only 256MB of ram no matter how fast it is. at least not without loading it off of the disk or the HDD severel times over. That’s what you would call a bottle neck.
Can you guys confirm that this is all an

  • Tommy

Reguardless of what you sony fanboy say bad about the xbox 360, the proof is in the games. Something is obviously up with Sony framerates.

  • OhBoy– AGAIN??

    @ Daniel

“Now days we are spoilt with choice and great graphics.”

I don’t know if you realised, but you made a hell of a phrase! That’s so true man, so true!

I didn’t had the money to buy original consoles or games, the first console I had was an imitation of a NES, it came with a 211 games in 1 cartdridge, I played it for 3 days straight, I dind’t even saw the light of day during those 3 days, it was 100% video game FUN! Then I bought a Mega-Drive (known as Genesis in US), I bought MKII and man… I was The master at that game, I knew everything it was possible to know about a game, I din’t had money to buy more so I took all the joy a could from each game I bought (1 in each six months with luck)…

Now I’m married and a father, I “have” the money to buy everything I want, but this war consoles become so ugly and full of conspirations and technical data and huge interests that I see myself more time in Internet reading “war” then playing games, there are o many reviews, to many opinions, to many “everything”, it’s no more about THE game, is about every little aspect of the console, the controllers, the graphics, the sound, the brand, the companies, the advertisements, etc etc etc…….

Back in the days it was only about (F+F+B+D+HK)…

The age brings concerns and to many “racional” ideas, maybe when we are little kids we really know hoe to enjoy a video-game without the concern if the other console version plays better or not, or if the xxx site gave i a review of 3.2…

But I see 10 and 12 years old kids in this endless fanboy war… so I imagine video-games will never more be like the old times….

Sorry for the long comment, but I believe that the older Hard-core gamers undertand what I’m trying to say…

PS: Sorry my English, I’m from Europe (not UK).

  • Tommy

The sony is a good movieplayer though. Not that blu-ray offer any leap over hd dvd.

  • Grover

My god. Has this site become MS’s marketing site? This persons opinion is completely innaccurate – much like fanboy George.

One very simple example of this is the fact you have nothing but anti-PS3 statements on this site, and no logically backed X360 and PS3 statements.

And for all the damn ignorant Cell X360 fanboys, read some damn documentation!! You are plain idiots!!
    http://www.ibm.com/developerworks/power/cell/docs_documentation.html

The Cell has INTERNAL dma controllers on a ring buss. Each SPU can access memory INDEPENDANT of the PPE. This bullshit about the PPE having to control the SPE’s is exactly that – bullshit. The SPUs can independantly operate on their own if you want – get a damn PS3 and try it for yourself, its part of the simple SPU examples!!!

So.. to product-reviews.com you guys are being competely innaccurate and MS fanboys. You seriously need to get and produce some real facts and not the bullshit fanboys propagate here.

  • burrito boy

yeah but you all forgeting that the bit rate of the ps3 with the square root of the megapixels of the l.l.=emc2 by the ponastic formula followed by the gallois extensions of the covering space in the moleculing state of the power 3 formula, equals the parrallel processing of the sinoptic x…so bottom line the xbox 360 got a lot of bus memory and the playstation 3 got a minivan of accessible power in the logic core intake operation…dividin x per b+ c= a=bc meaning the output of the =xvodecalbua= will mean a bit rate of that of aproximately a lot. so stop your bitching all of you. but then again with a tittle like this, you know that if you come to this website you are going to argue and prove your point. but no matter what i tell you all something that will shut you up… I LOVE BIG TITTIES!!!!!!!!!!! booyah!

I just cannot take this seriously and I own many consoles… This website is a joke

  • xslashedx

well, i own PS2PS3 and the original Xbox1
and i love all of them!i don’t care anything which is better as long as they are not faulty game consoles!! i will buy Xbox 360 in the near future only if the hardware problems are fixed ;v

  • Myahon

complain all you like, he’s RIGHT. When it comes to power the 360 is the winner. When it comes to sales it’s the winner in America. And second only to the Wii worldwide. When it comes to games Sony is losing exclusives hand over fist.

It’s the two gen curse. Atari rules for 2 gens, got cocky and lost to Nintendo, Nintendo ruled for 2 gens, figured they could do what they want and lost to Playstation, which ruled for 2 gens and… guess what…. Their sales are unrecovarable. Even with the price drop it’s still selling less than half that of the Wii and no where near that of 360.

Developers are leaving because you can’t make a profit on a console with such low userbase. The same reason the very powerful gamecube got far less games then the underpowered PS2. it’s all about the userbase.

I also remind you you can’t enforce your taste on others. He’s talking tech specs, which if they mattered Xbox 1 would have won last round of the console wars.

I remind you like I do that annoying I-phone users with no I-life. Your console/operating system =/= your penis size. Taste is taste.

  • Media Man

It may not push more polygons but the ps3 is far more practical for my entertainment needs. Xbox 360 doesn’t have blu ray or DVD up scaling to 1080p.

  • Charles

I have read this post and others around the same topic and it makes me laugh. Why is it when the truth is shed and developers are saying it in abundance that all these Sony Fanboys get pissed off, throw stats and carry on a rant. They are the developers, not you. Get over the fact that Sony pimped you into believing that your system was superior all in an effort to push Blu-Ray. Really and truly, did the PS2 do anything but play games? Did the Xbox do nothing else but play games? Did you say I can’t wait until the next generation so I can play games with better graphics or did you say I can’t wait until the next generation comes along so I can watch a Blu-Ray Movie? Really, When Nintendo had their original system and they went to Super Nindendo the big deal was 16bit graphics. Then after that it just got better until you come to this generation of consoles. Now ask yourself who has the games. All I hear is Sony Fanboy ranting about PS3 Specs and Blu-ray and Home and folding and everything else that has nothing to do with games. Then the games they have are plauged with development problems and poorer graphics and are not upto par. Your buying a gimic and unfortunatly your the bait. Come on it all about the games and nothing else. Everything else is extra. The only thing Microsoft did to improve games was make them better and add LIVE which is the perfect compliment to GAMES. If your looking for a system with games look to Microsoft and Nindendo. If your looking for a Blu-ray player buy a PS3.

  • Kaz

first of all the ps3 has this 256 MB XDR @ 3,2 GHz
256 MB GDDR3 @ 700 MHz, GPU can access CPU memory
    256+256= 512

    360 as this 512 MB GDDR3 @ 700 MHz shared between CPU & GPU
10 MB EDRAM GPU frame buffer memory
only thing diffrent is that the 360 as that edram and its only 10mb
but that 512 is shared with both cpu and gpu its not split up like the ps3 is.
plus the playstation is alot faster then xbox 360 is. but you so called developers unlike a few dont know how to code for ps3 but soon that will change.

lol you got to be kidding about the polygons maknig the frame rates low just play cod4 on ps3 and xbox 360 there exactly the same 60fps

wrost case for ps3 polygon count: 400 million polygons per second (1.2 billion vertices per second / 3 vertices per triangle)

Maximum (optimistic case) 750 million and more depending on how many triangle strips are used in the game

so if you still have issues with this then contact gurellia games and ask them by far ps3 out does xbox 360 in polygons why you think MS keeps talking about there shaders.

understand the tech befor you spit out garbage.
and also the reason sony took the other cell out because the fear of devs not knowing what to do with the cell for graphics.

  • Vince

Man, listen to the sad ps3 people. You have a machine that has half the power of the XBOX 360 – deal with it.

Sucked in by the SONY pr machine again. Fool me once shame on you, fool me twice . . .

  • http://vgcchartz.com This Guy

It is a really big shame to hear the writer of the article calling game creators really lazy. Best said in this quote, “Because the Xbox 360 is so much easier for developers to develop games for and experiment with new types of gameplay.” Remember when the Playstation 1 came out, developers were intimidated by the new technology but in time they were able to develop great games.
And lets not forget that the Playstation 2 had about 8,571 game titles. This sir is where their bag of tricks lies. The 360 may have games now, but what about in a year when the Halo 3 hysteria dies. Halo 3 has the best launch in history, and i doubt theres another game capable of doing this.
Not to mention the 8 million units you say the 360 has over the PS3 includes a year the PS3 was not even in the fight. And if you align the launch dates of both consoles together, their weekly console sales are very close together with the exception that PS3 is doing a little better than the 360 when it was out this long.
And i am surprised you still have loyalty to the xbox. They made you get the huge control for the XBOX, they had a recall for the power cord on the XBOX. On the Xbox 360 if you want to match the ability of the PS3, you have to buy an HDVD player, the wireless adapter, and other things. At least Sony doesnt try to rip me off with 2.5 inch 10$ Halo 3 figurines.

  • Jweev

    Geeeeeee-whiz.
Who cares if a console has a jet engine strapped to it? The whole point of a gaming system is to PLAY GAMES! Throw all the tech stats out here you want, it’s irrelevant. If I had to choose, I would say I am a fanboy, but Microsoft made 2 better moves this round than Sony did:

-Microsoft learned from last time and launched earlier than Sony.
-Microsoft removed components like the hd movie drive and wireless adapter. This enabled them to offer the system at a significantly lower price, increasing sales.

Both systems have very good exclusive franchises, but Sony has more, and it sucks for people who only own one or the other (like me).

Bottom line, outside of exclusive titles, microsoft will end up with more titles and better titles because the have significantly more units in houses than does Sony. And since neither Sony nor Microsoft has ever done anything for me, I’m gonna go w/ better games every time.

How much easy it’s become these days to spin the facts using BIG numbers and complicated abbreviations. This post in Product Reviews is one of them

There are meticulous research that are published in peer-reviewed, scientific journals that point out to the processing power of the cell processor. A few examples are

Wow worst read ever, you sound like such a fanboy it makes me sick. With games out now like Ratchet and Clank, Hevanly Sword, Motostorm, RFOM, Warhawk, GRAW 2 out already with games coming out in the next couple months like GT5 prologe, Unreal T3, Haze, Uncharted, Lil big Planet, COD4, Burnout coming out you look like the biggest fanboy ever calling it at a brick when it hasent even been a year yet and already looks better than what was on the table in the same time period from the 360. Then you talk about next year God of War 3, Killzone 2, Final Fantacy, MGS4!!, GT5, GTA4, The Getaway, Socom conf, Socom full game, Street Fighter, Tekken 6, Infamous, Singstar, and many more yet to be announced you clearly say you dont have a PS3 and with the beast that the ps3 is and the 2 year of games to show it off better If $399 for a great system with blu-ray, is to much for you should get a better job and stop this writing crap beacuse you stink at it. ENJOY your day :)

I thought this was a review site! Now, if I want to know incredibly false information about a console, I know where to find it.

You can’t post other people’s opinions unless they have and post references to back them up and not from another news source (developers should know the most) cause in the end it means nothing and it gives people the wrong idea about the subject.

    It comes down to this.
There are visually stunning games on both consoles.
Different technology works in different ways that I really don’t care about or want to know.
As someone said, its about having fun.
I have not heard or read from anyone who is first and foremost a software programming engineer / graphics guru who said “In my expert, objective opinion the performance and quality of (_____enter console name here) is the superior one”.
Until we get a panel of independent, impartial expert professionals the jury will be out on which console is graphically best.
Most of us are fanboys, I know I am. A few of us care more about the games than the brand of machine.
I agree with the fella that said something about remembering we’re only in it for the pleasure of gaming.
    nuff said?

  • MikeB

This is complete nonesense, the PS3 is fundamentally much more powerful. This guy (who is he?) surely is no low level programmer or hardware designer.

The only reason why some early games didn’t run very well on the PS3 was because they were ported from the XBox 360, which offers different specifications and these games are not tapping into the Cell SPU’s (the bulk of the Cell’s performance potential, powerful and flexible processors which are able to accelerate CPU as well as GPU related tasks.

  • Norton

Lets not forget that the ps3 pixel shading technology isn’t as good either

    http://www.tech.co.uk/home-entertainment/gaming/games-consoles/news/sony-ps3-not-as-good-as-xbox-360?articleid=688059659

“Fill rate is one of the primary ways to measure graphics performance – in essence, it’s a number describing how many pixel operations you can perform. The fill rate on the PS3 is significantly slower than on the 360, meaning that games either have to run at lower resolution or use simpler shader effects to achieve the same performance.”

Lets face is PS3 stands for Piece of Shi* 3

  • alfredo

Too bad the ratchet and clank demo looks like shit sometimes, when the frame rate drops to like 20 fps when that big building is being destroyed, looked like too many polygons for the ps3 to handle at the same time.. oh and i have a ps3 and im always fighting with my 360 friends because they talk shit about the ps3, but im beggining to guess they are right.. oh and sonic, has anybody played sonic? when the frame rate drops to literally 6 frames per second?

  • Worst Fanboy Post Eva

Well what a load of misleading 360 fanboy garbage that is! Aside from how (in)accurate the article is, the author seems to be forgetting the fact the PS3 is out now! I recall Microsoft written “independent” research about the differences between the 360 and PS3 before the PS3 was released that read very much they this.

However, I have now played/seen games like Ratchet and Clank, GT5, Unchartered, MGS5, Lair (talking graphics/sound not gameplay), Warhawk etc. so I know what the PS3 is capable of, and as far as I’m concerned it’s a lot more impressive than what the 360 offers.

The 360 is built like a PC, and games look like PC games, even Halo 3 surprised me at how PC looking it was and how jagged things were. I was struggling to see what it was doing that my old PC couldn’t! Whereas I find PS3 graphics to be much more impressive and natural (and in the case of R&C, approaching Pixar quality). It may just be personal oppinion but I find PS3 (exclusive) games look much more visually impressive than the 360 equivalents.

Also exclusives and games where the PS3 has been the lead platform or independently developed show what the PS3 is capable of – Haze (developers were so happy with it they dropped the 360 version), UT3 (developers think the PS3 version is equal to the very highest spec PC, but remain strangely quiet on the 360 version), Call of Duty 4 (running flawlessly on the PS3 at 1080p 60fps, some early previews suggesting it even eclipses the 360 version).

This guy is trying to use a handful of lazy 360 ports as proof for his crap pseudoscience, while completely ignoring hard evidence (the games) that are staring him in the face!

Now that developers are getting to grips with the finer points of PS3 programming you are beginning to see the true potential of the PS3 and to suggest that somehow the games listed above are exceptions and that the future for the PS3 is 30fps 720p low quality ports of super duper 5 years ahead of their time 1080p 60fps mega games for a console that never brakes, is frankly ridiculous!

  • http://www.realmud.com Marc

As a retailer id have to say that the PS3 is history. Can’t sell them or the games. The 360 owns the market. Is the 360 more powerful? There is not one game that I know of that plays better on the PS3 than on the 360.

  • skunkburna

Hey! How come you didnt drop the my xbox can also fry eggs on it speciality?

  • Stef

ive only got 2 thingd to say to this idiot.
the first is that the xbox 360 will soon be outdated, dont kid urself. ps3 has from the start next gen disk, next gen hdmi and hard drives in every version (upgradable, so future proof) next thing.
i got 1 example… Gran Turismo 5. if youre talking graphics, there is no better. recently a quiz went out on the net that proved that 92% people cant tell the difference between GT5 and real life. thats just how good the graphics are. and need i mention that the best looking game EVER on a console happens to run at 1080p and at 60 frames per second smoothly? and polyphony themselves stated that what they were tryin to achieve would not be possible on the x360 and any new pc costing less than $8000. im sorry, but you’re wrong. ps3 is the future

  • Stef

just remembered. ps3 runs linux as well as other os’s. there is already an xbox360 emulator on yellow dog linux being developed. how long untill ps3 can play xbox 360 game, 1-1.5 years to halo 3? already there is an emulator that can run on linux on the ps3 that plays most every xbox 1 game. thats better than the 360 can do already!!!
Ill keep my ps3 and play halo 3 too, without spending $400 of wasted money on a console thats going to be outdated in 2 years. so i dont care

i own both a ps3 and a 360,while i would not buy the same game for both consoles i do download the same demo’s. the does seem better lighting on the ps3.but far more important to me is the consoles controller the xbox feels really comfortable but i can never get on with it, offset joysticks just dont seem to work that well and are not very sensitive. the ps3 on controller work very well and would go as far to say a design icon.all it needs is rumble feature.
next point is how long my xbox will last until i get the redring of death.
And we do need both consoles as if only one wins this war the price of games i fear will go through the roof.

  • Chris

Wow, some Xbox 360 fanboys can be a real pain in the arse. When I say some, I mean all of them

  • MikeB

I think these comments from the guys behind Darkness sheds some light on why various multiplatform games didn’t get the most out of the hardware potential:

“It depends on the type of engine you are doing. In The Darkness they have pretty similar performance, but that is very intentional from our side. We need the two platforms to perform similarly, and therefore we can’t design features that would take advantage of the difference of the two platforms. To my knowledge the PS3 has untapped potential in its seven SPUs”

    Source: Edge online

Also various early exclusives didn’t yet use the PS3′s SPEs, this was confirmed with regard to Genji 2, a game which looked graphically stunning and ran well on the platform. Give developers some time to adjust their legacy game engines, there’s no doubt the PS3 offers a lot more potential than the XBox 360 does.

Look at me! Look at me!

Yo! I be own’n the 360, like actually my 7th 360 for that matter…and I am suuuuch a fanboy. It makes me all warm and fuzzy inside. Thats beside the point though.

Honestly…which is better? Coke or Pepsi? Ford or Chevy? Southpark or Family Guy (ok that last one isn’t fair…everyone knows Southpark rules…only a PS3 fan would like Family Guy)…

My point is…I google XBOX 360 dialy, and I clicked on a link that took me to this site. Its pretty clear of this writters agenda. I mean, he could have wrote the same article, and left out a few of the personal indirect jabs at sony and came away with a bit more respect…

Now if your happy with you PS3

  • foo man ju

    Continued…

…and your 4 games worth playing right now…then good for you! Like I said before, I’ll be buying one soon to watch my movies on…and I suppose its possible that MGS4 and Killzone and UT3 will be cool…so then lets talk…right no all i have to say is Gears of War.

  • IsThis4Real?

Im a fanboy too. Not such a big deal.

  • MikeB

    1) The XBox 360 design is bottlenecked. The GPU and CPU have to share one bus to the RAM. The PS3 has one bus to faster low latency XDR RAM and a seperate bus to the GDDR3 RAM. Roughly twice the bandwidth.

    > PS3 can NEVER access more than 256MB of RAM at any point

    2) It can both the CPU and GPU have access to both types of RAM.

    > TWO Cell CPU processors–each with two Threads that could Send signals to the SPE subprocessors.

    3) The PPE allows for 2 hardware threads and as many software thread the software developer wants, each SPE allow for 1 hardware thread and as many software threads the developer wants to create.

    > Programmers often say that the PS3 has two arms (CPU Threads) that are trying to juggle six balls (SPE sub-processors). Obviously, that is NOT possible, and that is why the Playstation 3 hardware is such a BIG disappointment.

4)IBM tests already showed the SPEs can reach near 100% perfomance levels. So there’s no bottleneck.

    > Each of those six SPE processors is capable of Receiving a Threaded signal

5)7 SPEs, one is currently used exclusively by the OS.

Just some things I wanted to point out to render the article useless and clueless.

my god! the ps3 does not need to have the same amount of polys as the 360 becasue the 7 symetric cores can hold that much data! and with the help of blu ray giving the ps3 a transfer rate of 48mbps the ps3 will still give more. look what rock star said about gta 4 “we had to hold back the ps3 version as the 360 could not keep up, and with the 56Gb’s of data on one disc, we could not see all 360 owners having a large HDD”

  • JackDax

I seem to recall a dev working on GT5 commenting on how realistic PGR4 looked, stating that there was no way (at the tokyo game show) that was realtime gameplay, then he played the demo and was blown away. I believe it was in an Issue of EGM either from last month or the month before.

    http://www.players4players.com/fotosnoticias/1767870647451af51f4b720.jpg

    http://media.xbox360.ign.com/media/853/853087/vids_1.html
just look at any of the gameplay videos here. PGR4 runs ag 60fps and is one of the best looking racers I have seen to date. that is to say GT5 isn’t out yet so I can’t really compare the two fairly.

  • Steve

hahaha erm 8 million more 360′s sold than ps3. so that makes a total of 6 360 customers as they have bought a few hundred thousand each.
i dont know what inspired this article but the predictions in it wont happen, the new ps3 ad campaign follwed by november releases and finally ff13 and mgs 4 will have ps3′s flying off the shelves. And with very few returns compared to a big woopsie by microsoft not being involved with testing the 360 and its basically got a hamsters life span, you just dont know when it will die.

  • rosario

to be honest who really cares what any one says if u like the ps3 stick wwith the ps3 vice versa, all i see one websites and youtube is people saying fuck the 360, fuck the ps3, omg how sad do have to be to do that they are probaly geeks who have never had a shag (SEX) makeing them selves feel big all i have to say is O DEAR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Chris

You corporate shrills need to focus the frick away from sales. Sales don’t mean shít.

Oooh, big woop, the Xbox 360 has sold more units than the Playstation 3. Wake the hell up! The 360′s been out for a year longer. Look back to the games and sales in the 360′s first year, both crap.

Like I said, sales barely signify anything. Think about the Wii. Why does it sell so well? Primarily, because it’s cheap, even though Nintendo sells it for more than it costs to make. On the other hand, Playstation 3 owners are getting an incredible bargain when buying a PS3.

Next, it appeals to parents who want to buy a console for their kids. The Wii looks cute, it’s small, and has kiddy games. On that note, most of its games are oriented to children; Cars, Meet the Robinsons, The Ant Bully, Cooking Mama, Spongebob, Billy and Mandy, the list goes on…

Have any of you realized that the total Xbox 360 sales include the people who had to buy another 360 because their first, second, third, even fourth 360 succumbed to the red rings of death? When you look at it, that means that even though more 360s have been sold, the number of people who own a 360 and Playstation 3 are very close.

  • Shane_O

    Hey Kim,

STFU! I pity system fanboys like you. Honesly, why does this $#!t about 250,000,000 polygons to 500,000,000 polygons even matter, or any hardware spec between the 360 and PS3 for that matter? Games are only as good as the developers behind them, bottom line! Call of Duty 4 is a perfect example, that if a developer takes the time to understand how a system works it will be exactly the same on either the 360 or PS3. So, take a chill pill and relax, because none of this stuff matters at all in the long run. Just enjoy the games you want to play on the system you want to play them on and STFU!

    P.S.
    Fanboys suck!

  • Haligonian

$ONY fanboys can’t stand hearing the truth! I would feel the same way if I had dropped all that cash for a system that simply doesn’t deliver the goods. Maybe someday $ony will get their shi7 together but until that far off day comes, go buy a 360 ppl. Why wait when XBOX Live is here now? I mean I didn’t play games at all until the day I went and played on LIVE – now I can’t stop….it’s like crack for smart ppl!!!

  • Matt Dupont

I’m glad I read this article. Very informative. I was thinking of getting 2 consoles this holiday. One for my brother and myself.

I was about to get a PS3. My friend has it and said the same thing how the framerate on Resistance: Fall of Man is pretty bad. That’s the only game he has so I don’t know if it does it on other PS3 games.

With the 360 I was afraid of the 3 red lights. But I guess since they have that new 3 yr warranty it won’t be a bad deal.

Anyway, I saw this deal on Amazon where you buy an Elite and get 2 games with it, Forza 2 and Ultimate Alliance for $450. I just ordered 2 so I’m pretty excited.

ok i was a die hard xbox 1 fan…never had a ps2, microsoft pulled the original xbox off the shelf roughly 4.5 years after its release. Ironically, this is just when it was starting to actually catch up to the ps2 cough cough. It was superior in every way minus the games. I loved it none the less. Why did they pull it off the shelf…money, it cost too much to make and good old bill was loosing money :( what did they put out…the ring of death…a cheap, slight upgrade on the original system. discouraged, i shunned xbox and waited for the ps3. Im glad I did, with ps3 you get a ps1, ps2, dvd, blu ray, and cd player. I own about 200 ps1 and ps2 (i got a few I missed for ps2) and despite what you may read they work flawlessly. We are talking about games for the ps1 that are over ten fucking years old!!! I own 374 original games for xbox one and if I got a 360 100 of them (may) work. wtf??? And lets not forget that blockbuster has signed a contract in which they will be exclusively carrying Blu ray…the dvd era is over and blu ray is the new standard (or will be). Oh yeah, blockbuster just happens to be Americas #1 chain of video rental stores in the usa…significant point I think yes. Also, lets talk about the horsepower of the two systems….yeah ps3 can process 2 terraflops of information to 360′s 1…significant…i think yes. Lets talk about 1080….most 360 games run in 720…most ps3 games (especially sony made games) run in full 1080. And lets not forget where videogames really come from (japan) and area were sony will more likely dominate over 360…japan. significant…i think yes. Who had the first cd player, who had the first walkman, who had the first boom box….sony, I think yes. And what was the last American gaming company to make a system…atari…jaguar..crash and burn…..keep having those pow wows in your ring of death in vain…then check out heavenly sword

ps. halo is the most over rated game of all time

    for real!

  • steve

John, your spelling and grammar is bad but you are a smart man!!! You are right in a lot of what you say and I can tell you have given this much thought. I own a 360 and I played heavenly sword, I honestly think that ps3 is more capable from the looks of that game alone…here is one thing though, go to blockbuster and look at how many 360 games they have vs ps3…what does it tell you? More people are playing 360 than ps3 and that says something! Right now I am content with my 360…although I will admit…its my 3rd one. But as a gamer, I will say I do wish I had a ps3.

  • aaron

hahah, smart man John…really. All I have to say is PS3 IS SO MUCH SEXIER THAN 360!!!

JOHN HAS THOUGHT ABOUT THIS…..ALTHOUGH HIS GRAMMAR IS OFF IN SOME PLACES!!!

  • Console yourselves

Why bother with, which company sells the most, what is the point in debating that. The only people that need to be worried about sales are the corporate heads at the respective companies.

If Sony wins the console war, will you get some kind of special prize? If Microsoft outsells Sony, will they give you a profit share?

Actually the ps3 can do 400 to 750 million polygons per second depending on the game. See the facts at:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RSX_'Reality_Synthesizer‘ do a little more research shi7box fanboys.

God you Sony Fanboy have a lot of time on your hands to write all these long whining posts!…. we’ll i suppose you gotta do something while you wait 4 some games to come to your movie player.

  • martin

I think John is talking S**t, and a ps3 fanboy
    …significant…i think yes.

  • George

    Um..
Actually the original poster is correct in pretty much all of what he says.
In particular, the PS3 does not have 512mb of shared ram, it has 256mb of dedicated Ram for GPU and CPU use.
And the PS3 WAS originally designed to not have a separate graphics processor, with the Cell handling it all.
And at the last minute they went to Nvidia for a solution(not because they were scared of the Xbox’s GPU) because they realised that the cell couldn’t handle graphics processing duties on its own. Sorry “Mak” you are incorrect and the OP is correct.

  • George

p.s. if they PS3 is so much more powerful than the xbox (lol) then how come every game that is out for both systems is either identical, OR superior on the xbox, running at more FPS.

Can any PS3 fanboy name a game that is out for both systems that is superior on the PS3? I thought not.

Also you people talk about the cell like its the second coming, despite it’s documented coding issues.

But you utterly fail to ignore the indisputable fact that the PS3′s GPU is inferior.
There is no argument on this latter point, it is a fact.

So if even if the Cell > xbox CPU (which it isn’t) the xbox GPU > the PS3 GPU, and as most games are more GPU than CPU dependent, any perceived (and incorrect) superiority of the Cell processer is probably not that important.

Anyone care to comment on this?

  • MikeB

    @ George

Read my comments above, it answers your question.

    > Can any PS3 fanboy name a game that is out for both systems that is superior on the PS3? I thought not.

Oblivion, DiRT, Call of Duty 4, things are looking up with regard to cross platform PS3 game development.

    > But you utterly fail to ignore the indisputable fact that the PS3’s GPU is inferior.

It’s not, it’s more powerful (more ops per second) and in addition with the SPEs can considerably outperform the XBox 360′s max potential.

  • penn

    @George

I was skeptical at first of the xbox 360 vs PS3 debate. In fact I felt the PS3 was superior with all the graphical trailers and impressive spec numbers being spouted off by sony.

I also originally felt the xbox was in damage control in how they tried to explain the performance gap between the consoles in terms of the xenon vs cell…

i,e. Cells performance is theoretical, more suited to single floating point operations i.e, encoding decoding movies etc, the cell wont handle gaming code that well…blablabla…

I didnt think the arguements were that relevant, at the time.

But game after game after game, I am starting to think that microsoft were not far from the truth.

Spouting off names of games like Killzone 2, MGS4, Ratchet and Clank etc…and then giving discussion ending rhetoric like “Full Stop” or “its all over” or “game over”…hardly makes for a rational explantation of the real world circumstances of both consoles.

  • dabizo

    @George

Ratchet and Clank could never be run on a 360 – it can’t even fit on a dvd either.

PS3 is a more powerful machine than a 360 – so what! Wii is a shite console but still outsells both.

PS3 is only 8 month old – it was out the end of March, games not ported will be better looking than a 360 its just fact, this article is rubbish m8

  • Vrostus

It’s a shame that people have to criticise a product and come up with rubbish, rather than being critique in their articles. Articles like this that give a subjective view are of no benefit to anybody, this goes for anybody writing any article on anything.

PS3 IS THE DON END OF

  • JCM

The article is obviously biased, and does not cite any sources for the “data”. But, that doesn’t mean it’s not true.

The only thing I can say for 100% sure is that after 1 month, 8 games, and a lot of perseverence, my Xbox 360 is currently sitting on ebay, waiting to be sold.

After playing the PS3 since its UK release in March, there is NO WAY that I could settle for the next best thing. The 360 IS a good console, but it simply isn’t good enough.

I just wish that more others could talk from experience, rather than their arse.

I actually write the code for a lot of these games. Anyone who wants to masturbate over the PS3 go ahead. Hey guess what maybe you can go and write the code for these games, because guess what the programming world does not. I challenge anyone of you to come into work with me and ask any real game programmers if they enjoy writing code for the PS3.

You guys are as dumb as Sony, they do not get it, and neither do any of you!

Sony fired Phil T. In the gaming world to fire a legend means your console was a bust. You guys with your horse blinders on can’t even see this.

Two years roughly before Xbox360 came out, both consoles had a programmer convention to show us what they had built and FAQ.

Xbox360 was smart enough to ask us as programmers, what do you need from us to be implemented on the 360. Guess what they did implement most of our suggestions and that is why it is so easy towrite code for. That is the just the code aspect not the hardware aspect that he is talking about in the article. That was another bonus which allows us to create faster pure graphics.

Now PS3 had a programmer’s convention but all they did is show us how pwerful their console is nothing else.

Now some of the hardware in the PS3 is more powerful then the 360. The only problem is it’s the wrong hardware that is more powerful then the 360.

By the way any game created for both platforms is automatically created for the 360 first(more consoles and less code) then ported to the PS3. Now I know that at our studio, time is money. And it takes about 5-10 lines of PS3 code to convert 1-2 lines of Xbox360 code. The Sony code is like programming in the dark ages, they have zero libraries of functions. So that being said we at this studio farm out the PS3 coding to a company not as reputable as us. I’m not saying they can’t write code. They just may take a few shortcuts until they start making their own games

So yeah if any of you PS3 losers want to write code for PS3, coming to work with me we have a lot of finished 360 games that need to be ported to the PS3. I’m sure you guys are older then a 12 yr old indian boy, so you may write better code for Sony then we have actually writing now.

P.S. PS3 can’t even afford to pay for many exclusives right now, and don’t mistaken Sony for the PS3 division, because Sony has almost cut htem off of funding.

    Wake up people!

  • JACK

    Actually Mike B,
after a patch oblivion for the 360 looks the same as the PS3 version, and the game of the year addition is the exact same. the reason for oblivion was that it had far longer development time and Bethesda changed the shaders for the game engine. Dirt? after a patch it runs exactly the same as well. CoD4? not one difference whatsoever.

    as for you Dabizo,
Ratchet and Clank disk size is only because instead of having one copy of a texture on the disk, they put a copy of the texture in each level because the read speed of the Blu-ray disk is much slower than that of DVD henceforth the reason for the large disk size. As for whether or not it could be playable on the 360, Probably. but since Sony would never let their precious franchise go, so we will never know. I do agree though, the article is utter rubbish.

The overall fact of the matter is, the PS3 and 360 are pretty much equal in terms of power the PS3 may have more theoretical power, but since a theory isn’t necessarily true than why bother even comparing. Sony doesn’t care about it’s fanboys, I recall them stating At E3 2005 that people would buy a brick if they called it PS3.
I don’t currently own a PS3 but my brother does, and neither of us play the damn thing, we usually play PC games with a little 360 and SNES on the side.
If you can afford it just buy all three consoles and be happy.
also the PS2′s failure rate was as high or higher than the 360′s. launch 360 = no failure. . . yet.
    launch PS2 = 7th one and counting.

  • JACK

whoops, spelled a few things wrong there didn’t I.
    eh, who cares.

  • Jon

    @Jack

I agree, PS3 and 360 are fairly equal on overall game “quality” and appearance which is what really matters after all. BUT, with that said, I don’t think you know more than Insomniac does. They say no, they things they did on the PS3 wouldn’t work on the 360:

    http://www.ps3center.net/story-1186-Insomniac-Says-Ratchet–Clank-Only-Possible-On-PS3.html

The team has just finished releasing Ratchet & Clank Future: Tools of Destruction, which PCN will be reviewing next week. They have not even had time to rest for one week and they have already announced that new content is on the way to please PS3 gamers further.

“They also stated very clearly in a recent interview that the demands of Ratchet & Clank on the PS3 would not have been possible on any other system, that includes the Xbox 360.”

  • Eric

    @Jack

Unless you know better than Insomniac, the answer is no, R&C won’t run on the 360:

    @ JACK

    > The overall fact of the matter is, the PS3 and
    > 360 are pretty much equal in terms of power the
    > PS3 may have more theoretical power

The PS3 has much more proven power, it just takes time and effort writing or re-writing a game engine to make good use of the SPEs, but has already happened with regard to exclusives and it’s already well underway with regard to cross platform game development.

    > read speed of the Blu-ray disk is much slower than that of DVD

That depends on the reading speed of the drives.

Actually the PS3 can read Blu-Ray discs faster than the XBox 360 drive can read dual-layer DVDs on average.

Insomniac states they couldn’t have done R&C Future on DVD without significant sacrifices, even taking out of account localizations.

  • JACK

    @Mike B
Would you expect them to say that the game could run on the 360. simple matter of marketing and hype. I can’t recall the games but there has been other PS3 games that “couldn’t be done on the 360″ and vice-versa, I do believe that VF5 was said to be impossible on the 360. why pay any mind to the game developers or the publishers on games that are *Exclusive* to brand X. Of course they’re going to say it can’t be done on this or that. with the xbox 1 and ps2 generation there were some games that could not be done properly on the ps2 due to power constraints.(Splinter Cell pandora tomorrow had butchered levels and false “Shadows”)Truth be told, that both of the Power house consoles this time around are pretty much even on theoretical output and though R&C:FToD is a very good looking game, I would still give the nod to Oblivion(PS3 or 360) or Gears as far as graphics go. since I am not too much of a fan of the Ratchet series though I could really care less which console its on. If I really want to play it I will rent it and play it on my brothers PS3.

Also, doesn’t any one remember the PS1 disc issues? most of the games that I wanted to play(RPG’s) came on four or more discs. I don’t recall anyone complaining about it then. I don’t, however, see why a game such as Oblivion can fit on a single DVD with room to spare( the disc image for the 360 is a little less than 6GB) and Ratchet would have problems? Lost Odysee will come on four discs, the developer did state however that is because of the amount of CG cutscenes within the game. at any rate however, I could care less who has more disc space.
and the DVD read speed for the 360 is 16x while the BD in the PS3 is 2x. The read speed is quite different, BD 2x is approx. 12~13MB/s while 360′s DVD 16x is approx. 21~22.
as a side note, no games on the 360 are currently useing the hyper-threading on each core. Blah Blah, when they figure out how to program for the PS3′s SPE’s Blah Blah, it doesn’t matter what people say, for the next couple of years I don’t see either console looking much different different than each other.

If you also want to quote *Exclusive games* that’s fine, but exclusive does not mean system seller; GT5, MGS4, RnC:FToD, Drakes. . . not system sellers, well. . . Maybe MGS4 will be. . . but then again, the previous iterations weren’t really systems sellers. they did very well but not system seller well. at least not in the U.S.

  • MikeB

    @ JACK

    > I do believe that VF5 was said to be impossible on the 360

No, the developers never claimed this to be so? Making things up?

    > Gears as far as graphics go

I won’t, IMO the visuals are better and the game runs at 60 FPS. Oblivion looks nice but has framerate issues and more so on the XBox 360.

Epic already stated UT3 is well beyond what they have achieved in Gears of War and the game is said to run better than Gears did on the XBox 360, according to Epic.

    > Also, doesn’t any one remember the PS1 disc
    > issues? most of the games that I wanted to play
    > (RPG’s) came on four or more discs. I don’t?
    > recall anyone complaining about it then.

The PS1 was released in the CD era, imagine the PS2 came supplied with a CD drive instead of a DVD drive. God of War 2 on 10 or more (data duplication for faster loading) CDs? Luckily not.

  • John

    @Jynx

I think leet1 was trying to say more than anything is, the cell can indeed be exploited and scaled quite well for graphics performance, and completely independent of the GPU/PPE….whereas all the bone heads are saying all that matters is the GPU and PPE, and the SPEs are just for back end junk.

  • Warri0r

This whole article is wrong. The PS3 is able to have the same or more amount of polygons than the 360. The ram is also split into 2 different types on the PS3 and the cell and the rsx gpu can tap into both. The design of the PS3 has never changed since it was first designed and has always called for the cell processor and the RSX gpu. Also how the hell can you have 2 CPUs and make a video game console without a GPU? IMPOSSIBLE! So Daniel, who is the author of this article is an idiot. Also his comparisson between the two versions of Madden 08 was not a fair comparisson because the developers have had more experience with the 360 hardware than with the PS3. Also Daniel, can you explain why the 07 Edition of Madden for 360 was not in 60 FPS? Yeah, so if the Xbox 360 is really able to have more polygons, then why didnt Madden 07 have 60FPS? Do your research right next time and stop trying to make the xbox 360 sound superior to the PS3 because the PS3 is the one that is actually superior. That is why the PS3s are being used to help find cures for diseases and the 360s are not. In terms of hardware, PS3 wins.

  • Johnny Large

    @ PS3 Losers

As a programmer of these games, all games can be created on all consoles, not just Ps3 nor just 360, but any game can be tweaked to even play on a Wii or regular Xbox or even the Ps2. R&C can be programmed for the 360 and it would take a lot less code to do it as well. Again the hardware in the PS3, some of it is superior to 360, but the catalyst component hardware pieces are not. If you program for the console, which none of you do, because I do, and I would recognize any blogger who was one, considering how small the gaming PROGRAMMING industry is right now

By the way you have to love the Live component of PS3, oh wait! there is no live component to PS3, because they did not bother to test this with their previous console, they left it up to the game companies(very dumb idea!) in which only really one company took advantage of.

But who am I to argue with people who are use to playing with an inferior console, and let alone are too scared to reply to my comments because they know nothing of the industry.

  • TheShoe23

Actually, who are you? What company do you work for? What games have you programmed for? Won’t tell us huh. Well then you are lying out your teeth. I know because I’m a programmer for Insomniac and you are full of it. See I can lie too!

  • MikeB

Johnny is almost right but still very wrong. I agree R&C TOD could be made for the PS2, but the game quality and complexity would suffer, huge sacrifices would have to be made IMO making it offer a very different gaming experience.

Calling people “PS3 losers”, says enough though. I you want to talk to real coders, check out PS3Coderz.com (online again soon, I hope), the site is co-run by a buddy.

There is no way the 360 is more powerful than the ps3, the 360 graphics arn’t that big a step up from the last big ps2 games like GOW2, the ps3 graphics of there exclusive tiltles are far superior. Anyway it doesn’t matter about power it comes down to one thing and one thing only, the disc format, ps3 has stepped up and all the 360 does is push DVD’s further which wasn’t needed as the ps2 and XBOX already pushed it far enougth. 360 will lose out because it keeps producing generic games (apart from Bioshock) and has concentrated too much on online play and ended up neglecting the single player side of their games, Halo3, GOW, PGR etc. all rely on online to much and have ended up neglecting the hardcore/casual gamer like myself who like a bit of story and charcters and all round good single player experience from games like God of War, MGS series, Heavenly Sword, Shadow of Collosus, Ratchet and Clank Future etc and having games like RFOM and Motorstorm (althougth i am annoyed that in MS to play multiplayer u hav to go online) having online as a nice bonus feature. The PS3 got it right by concentrating on single player over multiplayer and bringing out great games for online play like Warhawk. The PS3 covers everything whilst the 360 is for people who like to go online and play the same games and do the same thing over and over (what’s the point?), when playing the 360 I start to think that Roger Ebert was right that games arn’t art, but then I stick on a ps3 game or play Wii round my mate’s and u see the effort and love put into these games because the developers made the games they want to make not the generic garbage the 360 spews out (just look at what they are doing to try and capture the Japan market, trying to guess what Japanese gamers want instead of using great ideas to make games).
Sorry bout ranting but I think 360 fanboys need to respect the Wii for what it does and the ps3 as the great all round games console and entertainmet hub that it is, this generation of gaming is going to be dominated by the ps3 and the Wii,and I guess the PC as well(it does have all the 360 games and more).
U 360 owners can have fun with Mass Effect I’ll stick with the console that willbring us MGS4, Haze, Uncharted, FF13, Killzone 2, GOW 3, Home, GT5 and the other that will bring us Smash Bros. and Galaxy, oh and a Wii mote lightsaber.

  • Jeff

    @michael

I think you have a good point. I think the younger crowd is more your 360 fanboys and they are getting what they want, online play. I have a lot of fun doing online play, but the 13-23 crowd seems to take great pride in spending hundreds of hours online honing their skills and making sure you know they are better than you. Online play is almost all trash talking fools who probably sit there playing Halo until they run out of red bull. Me, I like the story driven games a little better and occasionally go online with games that let me.

doesn’t matter whos more powerful, if we continue to see trends like this than. . . who Knows.

The world’s largest game publisher made most its money on Xbox 360 sales last quarter, more than double that of Sony and Nintendo sales combined.

    Source: Electronic Arts
According to an Electronic Arts filing released yesterday, Xbox 360 alone accounted for 50 percent ($218 million) of EA’s total revenue during the third quarter followed by Sony platforms with 25 percent ($111 million – PS2, PSP, PS3) and Nintendo’s Wii and DS with a combined 24 percent ($106 million).

Xbox 360 sales were up 31 percent over last year as Wii sales debuted at $59 million for the period followed by just $17 million in PS3 sales. PS2 sales were significantly down to $73 million from $269 million in the previous year while DS sales increased from $14 million for the quarter in 2006 to $47 this year. PSP sales dropped from $64 million in 2006 to $21 million in 2007.

Electronic Arts revenue by system (Q3 2007)
    Xbox 360 – $218 million
    PlayStation 2 – $73 million
    Nintendo Wii – $59 million
    Nintendo DS – $47 million
    PlayStation Portable – $21 million

    360 GPU > PS3 GPU FACT
    360 Memory arcitecture > PS3 FACT

    PS3 FAILS

  • Kim Naroz

“CPU Processing (Floating Point Math) Power”
    vs
“Videogame Graphics (Polygons, RAM, GPU) Power”

“Processing Power,” which is measured in Floating Point math calculations is the one and only area where the Playstation 3 hardware outperforms the Xbox 360 hardware. PS3 outperforms the Xbox 360 by about a 2:1 ratio in this area.

However, “Floating Point” math calculations are virtually USELESS in the area of Videogame Graphic Performance!

Several programmers have said that if the Xbox 360 and Playstation 3 were only running Spreadsheet or Accounting programs, then the Playstation 3 would outperform the Xbox 360 by a wide margin.

Those same developers pointed out that videogame consoles are NOT designed to run math-based Spreadsheets or Accounting programs.

It should also be noted that the Playstation 3 is NOT a supercomputer. When IBM uses the Cell processor in their supercomputers, there are two differences. First, IBM uses a more advanced version of the Cell processor. Sony was forced to downgrade the Cell CPU used in the PS3 in order to keep prices down. Second, IBM allows TENS-of-THOUSANDS of Cell processors to run parallel together, wheras the PS3 is just an individual CPU.

And in response, YES, the original design of the PS3 called for TWO Cell CPU processors to run parallel together and be priced at $399. When Sony saw the Xbox 360 and its advanced Unifed GPU technology, Sony knew that they needed a GPU in the PS3. However, the cost would have been too high to release a system with a GPU and two Cell CPU processors. As a result, one of the Cell CPU processors was removed (yet the price was still $599).

This is virtually identical to what happened to Sega when they designed the Saturn to be $199 with 2D processor power, but then saw the original Playstation based on 3D processing power. Sega was forced to add a couple of generic, non-customized, Hitachi SH2 CPU chips to run parallel. This caused the Saturn to be priced at $399. On paper the Saturn “appeared” to be more powerful than the original Playstation, but in reality the “performance” of software was always better on the Playstation.

Similarly, the software performance of the Xbox 360 is virtually always better than the Playstation 3. In terms of “Math-based CPU Processing Power” the Playstation 3 is more powerful than the Xbox 360. However, in terms of “Videogame-based (Polygons, RAM, GPU) Processing Power” the Xbox 360 is more powerful than the Playstation 3.

When Sony redesigned the PS3 in such a short time, it caused the development environment to be very difficult for developers. It caused the price to be much higher than originally planned. These factors have greatly contributed to the failure of the Playstation 3. Sony lost $1.9 billion dollars in the first quarter of the PS3 life. Sony has since had to lay-off employees, take out corporate loans, sell factories, and sell shares of stock to the public in order to generate liquid-assett cash, since the PS3 has proven so costly. This is the reason why there are so many rumors from reliable sources that say the Playstation 3 and PSP are the last hardware units we will see released from Sony.

Also, as a response, I want to point out that the PS3 CPU can never access more than 256MB of RAM. The PS3 does NOT have the same type of Unified RAM that the Xbox 360 does. With the PS3, there is almost always some type of RAM that is being wasted; however with the Xbox 360, all RAM is always being taken advantage of. Unified RAM is much more efficient, and that is why Xbox 360 games always have much smoother framerates.

The overwhelming majority of multi-platform games released on both systems has proven that time and time again the Xbox 360 versons are superior. This is a fact that continues to reinforce itself.

The only reason the Playstation 3 includes that type of Floating Point math-based Processing Power is to handle decoding process of the Blu-ray movie discs that are used on the Playstation 3.

Nevertheless, the Xbox 360 still has far more than enough Floating Point math-based Processing Power to handle the decoding of HD-DVD movies.

The fact is, Floating Point math-based Processing Power is virtually useless for videogames. In order to improve videogame graphics it takes polygon power, RAM, the most advanced GPU available, and a software development environment that developers enjoy working with.

Xbox 360 has FAR more power than the Playstation 3 in each of those areas. That is the reason why Xbox 360 games have smoother framerates, better textures, better lighting, ect… And that is why the Xbox 360 versions of games are rated higher and receive higher review scores.

Legendary game developer, John Carmack, specifically said that the Xbox 360 development environment is the best one ever created–even better than the PC!

Performance speaks louder than words. When it comes to multi-platform games, the overwhelming majority of Xbox 360 games are rated either noticably or significantly higher than the Playstation 3 versions. The gap in performance continues to grow in favor of the Xbox 360 over the course of time.

Playstation 3 also lacks games in key genres. For example, the Xbox 360 has Real Time Strategy games currently available such as Command & Conquer 3, and Battle for Mid-Earth 2. There are also seven more Xbox 360 RTS games on the way, including Halo Wars. But Playstation 3 has been available for over a year, and STILL does NOT have any Real-Time Strategy games to play.

Bottom Line: Xbox 360 offers far greater performance than the Playstation 3 as a videogame machine.

    @Kim

Hmmm, me thinks a microsoft related PR firm. My reasoning being you sounds like you’ve read a lot of MS’s white sheets but yet at the same time really know little about anything.

Bottom line dude, if there is a difference it’s not that much. You make it sound it’s a difference between day and night, but looking at the games they really are both quite fantastic and pretty equal.

  • Marc

Microsoft doesn’t need to do this kind of PR. The game ratings, reviews, and developers are all favoring the MS platform. Sure Sony is a great platform as well but it is the generation loser.

  • Eric

    @Marc

Dude keep reeding your 360 fanboi sites, they will tell you what you want to hear.

  • Marc

    Eric,

I am a Video Game retailer. An independent game store. Guess how many ps3′s i sold this holiday. I think its less than 5

    I sold at least 50 360′s

Everyday people come in and we let them play anything they want. its been over 3 months since a PS3 game was requested to be played on our Big screen.

Im just being realistic. I sell more N64 and NES then PS3 related anything.

  • Eric

    @marc

Are you saying that developers are favoring the MS platform because you aren’t selling PS3s and games? That is a stretch. People buy consoles for many reasons. Yes the 360 does have the critical mass right now but that all because of perception rather than reality. It is the popular choice. Hey go ahead buy a 360, what do I care. I think they are basically equal performance wise. 360 probably does have a better game selection, so that’s a very good reason to buy one. I mean it’s just as much as little johny’s friends all play Halo and he wants to join in over the web so little johney ask’s his mommy for a 360. Simple as that.

Also you saying it’s a 10-1 selling ratio? That is out of the norm. Right now it is 1.75-1 in the US and almost even parity world wide.

  • Eric

Also I think it needs to be said that last generation sales were over 120 million units and with Wii/360/PS3 combined we are at what 25 million right now? Still quite early to say any of them is the winner or loser. Maybe mid 2009 that can be said more definitively.

  • Marc

Im seeing 10-1 on console sales and maybe 30-1 game sales and 50-1 accessory sales with 360 being the favorite in my store.

For example I cant keep or get many xbox 360 Rock bands or Guitar hero 3′s but I have a stack of ps3 ones.

  • kenosuke

yeah but yall need to realise something. kfc is way better than churges chicken. period.

  • kenosuke

    thats churches**** my bad

  • kenosuke

    aw hell whatever.

  • Ian

its funny, all this discussion about system specs and crap like that. However, no one talks about what really matters. Fun for your money. Not only is the 360 cheaper, the livemaes it last so much longer. Example, cod 4′s single player didnt last very long, however I has logged over 16 days of online play! Its the replayability that live offers that really matters.
also, multiplayer isn’t the only thing live offers. The microtransactions for arcade game and the indie development games make the $6 oh so justified.
Let’s not forget the ability to rent movies! HD movies! This is revolutionary. All these bonuses blow the blue ray player out of the water and makes the PS online look like shit.
conclusion: xbox offers more bang for your buck. PS3 is the whore on the side with STDs

Gamespot has conducted a Graphics Comparison between the Xbox 360 and Playstation 3 each year since the Playstation 3 has been available.

Xbox 360 has been declared the winner of the Graphics Comparison each of the three years: 2006, 2007, 2008.

2008 shows that the gap in performance continues to get bigger, in favor of the Xbox 360.

Here is the hyperlink that shows the newest comparison–one the Xbox 360 easily defeats the Playstation: hxxp://www.gamespot.com/features/6191251/index.html

…And by the way, the Playstation 3 only transfers data at a rate of 54MB per second as a Blu-ray player being used for movies. When it comes to gaming, there are hardware “bottlenecks” that the Playstation 3 faces, which allows the PS3 to transfer data at a rate of only 9MB per second. The Xbox 360 transfers data at a rate of 16MB per second.

The Official Playstation Magazine wrote an article about the longer load times of PS3 games shortly after the Playstation 3 was launched. The only time the PS3 does not have to deal with either noticably or significantly longer load times is when the game is placed on the PS3 hard drive. Sadly, it often takes over TWENTY long minutes to write the game onto the PS3 hard drive. Even when a PS3 game is written onto a hard drive, the load times between Xbox 360 games and PS3 games is virtually identical, as we saw in Devil May Cry 4 and Grand Theft Auto 4.

Also, the person who listed the specifications of the Playstation 3 really should take a look at all of the nonsense that Sony listed. In case you didn’t notice, those specifications STILL have the Playstation 3 listed with 2 (yes, TWO) HDMI outputs!

Those were false specs, buddy! Even Konami’s Hideo Kojima specifically said that when the PS3 development kits arrived, the entire staff of Konami realized Sony listed false specifications about the Playstation 3 at the 2005 E3 show.

In case you don’t remember, Sony told LOTS of LIES with the Playstation 3, just like they did with the Playstation 2. The difference with the Playstation 3 is that this time we were ready for those lies. Like the saying goes, “Fool me once, shame on you; fool me twice, shame on me.”

Here’s a small sample of the LIES that Sony told:

    (1) Sony said the PS2 Emotion Engine supercomputer CPU would have graphics similar to the Disney Movie called Toy Story. Obviously that never came close to happening.

    (2) Sony said the PS3 would have “4D Graphics.” Obviously this never came close to happening. The PS3 only uses simulated 3D graphics.

    (3) Sony said the PS3 would have 2 HDMI outputs. We now know this didn’t happen; the PS3 has only 1 HDMI output.

    (4) Sony said the Playstation 3 would have games running at a “standard” 1080p resolution. We now know that the Playstation 3 has very few games with a 1080p resolution. Most Playstation 3 games have a Native Resolution of 720p or lower. For example, the Xbox 360 version of Grand Theft Auto 4 runs at 720p, while the Playstation 3 version runs at only 640p.

    (5) We also know that the Playstation 3 has ZERO games that run at 120 frames per second, even though Sony said we would see PS3 games running at 120 frames per second. We also know that most Playstation 3 games “struggle to run at 30 frames per second at 720p resolution.” That was a quote from Gamespot.

    (5) Sony continues to tell lies to this day. For example, Sony recently said that “ALL” PS3 games would have Trophies included them as a result of Firmware Update 2.4. We now know that only 3 (yes, ONLY THREE) Playstation 3 games received the Trophy feature from Firmware Update 2.4.

What’s worse is that Sony doesn’t require any 3rd party, 2nd party, or even 1st party developers to include the Trophy feature in any games that have already been released or will be released in the future! It is NOT a mandatory feature that developers must include with games the way that Xbox 360 Achievements are.

It’s common knowledge that the Playstation 3 has very inconsistent framerates, not only because of a lack of polygon power compared to the Xbox 360, but also because of the fact that the PS3 has only one Cell CPU, which has only two Threads to Send instructions to the six SPE subprocessors.

One person mentioned that the PPE chip in the PS3 also has two Threads to send instructions to the six SPE sub-processors; however, that is deceptive, because the PPE is a processor that does receive a Threaded instruction signal from the Cell CPU. The PPE is almost never used in PS3 games, because doing so would mean the Cell CPU has only ONE other Threaded instruction to send to the six SPE subprocessors.

It’s also important to remember that the Cell CPU used in the Playstation 3 is NOT the one that IBM originally intended to use in the Playstation 3. The Cell CPU that IBM uses in its computers is very different from the one that was downgraded to use in the Playstation 3.

The PPE focuses on physics, and works with the SPE subprocessors on Physics and Artificial Intelligence. As a result,PS3 developers often are forced to choose between Graphics or Artificial Intelligence. This is the reason why PS3 games have a reputation for terribly poor Artificial Intelligence.

Many people believe this is the reason why the Playstation 3 has been available for 1.5 Years and STILL does NOT have any games in the Real-Time Strategy genre.

  • Kim Naroz

I would also like to mention the superiority of the RAM in the Xbox 360.

There are several other reasons why the Xbox 360 has superior RAM.

Previously I talked about how both the Xbox 360 and PS3 are listed as having 512MB of RAM. I also talked about how the Xbox 360 RAM is Unified so both the CPU and GPU can access RAM simultaneously whenever it is needed. As a result, RAM is NEVER wasted in the Xbox 360. If the GPU needs 400MB of RAM, it can have it. If the CPU needs 400MB of RAM, it can have it.

The same cannot be said for the Playstation 3. The PS3 has RAM that is divided into two sections–one that is dedicated to the CPU, with the other dedicated to Video RAM. Each section is made up of 256MB of RAM.

Although the Video RAM of the PS3 can potentially make use of some of the CPU RAM, the FACT of the matter is that the CPU RAM of the Playstation 3 can NEVER have access to the 256MB of Video RAM. As a result, the Playstation 3 CPU can NEVER have access to more than 256MB of RAM.

There is another factor I didn’t mention before. It relates to the efficiency of the Operating System used for both systems.

The Xbox 360 Operating System is INCREDIBLY efficient! The Xbox 360 Operating System uses only 32MB of the systems RAM.

The Playstation 3 Operating System is TERRIBLY inefficient! The Playstation 3 Operating Systems WASTES 96MB of RAM that could be used for other purposes.

As a result, the Xbox 360 has 480MB of RAM to work with, while the PS3 has only 416MB of RAM to work with.

These reasons also play a role in the continuous advantages the Xbox 360 has over the Playstation 3 in terms of framerates that are much smoother and more consistent on the Xbox 360.

  • http://www.webforcenow.com Kim Naroz

Certain games, like Call of Duty 4 run at a framerate of 60 frames per second on both systems. But Call of Duty 4 is a game that experienced technical problems with various bottlenecks due to the varying levels of action that occur on the screen. The game was originally designed to run at 60 frames per second at 720p, but it caused drops in the framerate. The proof of this is the fact that Call of Duty 4 runs at a resolution of only 640p on both the Xbox 360 and Playstation 3. This may be “equal” in terms of what is displayed on the screen, but the FACT is that Call of Duty 4 is putting a much larger burden on the PS3 than it is the Xbox 360.

Confirmation of this can be seen in the large number of games that “run smoothly at 60 frames per second on the Xbox 360, but struggle to run at 30 frames per second on the Playstation 3.” That was a quote from Gamespot.

It’s simple math: The Xbox 360 can display approximately 500,000,000 polygons per second, compared to 275,000,000 polygons per second for the Playstation 3.

Multi-platform games use what is called a “Lowest Common Denominator” form of programming.

Basically, what this means is the developers start out by saying to themselves, “We need to develop a game for the Xbox 360 and the Playstation 3.”

Then, the developers put limits on how many polygons they are going to put on the screen, and they determine what framerate the game will run at as a result of that number.

When the developers multiply the number of polygons displayed on the screen by the number of frames being displayed each second, they examine what that number is. Multi-platform games can NEVER display more than 275,000,000 polygons per second, or else they can’t be released for the Playstation 3, since the PS3 cannot display more than 275,000,000 polygons per second.

As a result, developers are often conservative with the number of polygons being displayed with multi-platform games, especially with the poor reputation of inconsistent framerates that the Playstation 3 has acquired over time.

It basically comes down to these THREE factors:

If a multi-platform game running at 30 frames per second on the Playstation 3 uses 250,000,000 polygons or less, it gives the developers the ability to allow the Xbox 360 version to run at 60 frames per second, since 500,000,000 is double the number of 250,000,000.

If a multi-platform game running at 30 frames per second on the Playstation 3 uses over 250,000,000 polygons per second, it means the Xbox 360 version is also forced to run at only 30 frames per second. This is an unfortunate situation, because it means the Playstation 3 will be using 90-100% of its power by displaying somewhere between 250,000,000 to 275,000,000 polygons per second, while the Xbox 360 will only be using 60% of its power, since the Xbox 360 has so much more polygon power.

If a multi-platform game is intended to run at 60 frames per second on the Playstation 3, the Xbox 360 version will also run at 60 frames per second. The Playstation 3 version will be limited to 275,000,000 polygons per second. The Xbox 360 will also be limited to 275,000,000 polygons per second, due to the fact that 275,000,000 is the Lowest Common Denominator. This is unfortunate, because it means the Playstation 3 version will be using between 90% to 100% of the systems power, while the Xbox 360 will be using only 60% of the systems power. Call of Duty 4 is an excellent example of this situation.

Also, the Xbox 360 uses 10MB of eDRAM. This new form of RAM technology is something that even Windows Vista-based PCs do not yet take advantage of. The next release of Direct-X on the PC will start to take advantage of eDRAM technology for gaming, but it still hasn’t happened yet.

This just goes to show you how incredibly far ahead of its time the Xbox 360 Unified-Shader GPU/Multi-Core CPU design is.

  • Justin

This one made me laugh, for some particular reason the poster for this assumes that unified ram is a good thing, for those of us who have ever tried to run a PC game that pushes your hardware limits of current technology that this is a load of crap. A GEFORCE 5400 with 10TB of VRAM will never perform better then a 9800 with only 512MB. By making memory unified for video and thread processing you bottleneck the entire system by overloading the bus transport system. For a simple number crunching separating the RAM from VRAM is engenious. It doesn’t take that much to do the actual processing for even the most current games and the dedicated VRAM allows a seperate bus for data transport. From a programmers perspective, the person who posted this is trying to convince people that a pile of excrement is cotton candy, integrated video processing will never surpass dedicated.

  • Game Designer

Unified RAM in the Xbox 360 is vastly superior to the Non-Unified RAM setup in the Playstation 3.

The reason why Unified RAM doesn’t work well with Nvidia GEFORCE Graphics cards on the PC is because the technology used by Nvidia was not custom designed in a way that is optimized to work with a multi-core CPU and GPU working together with Unified Shader technology. Even the overall PC setup is not designed in a way that is optimized for Unified RAM. From the point of view of the PC setup, it is better to just have 2GB of Non-Unified RAM and let a lot of it be wasted than to have 2GB of Unified RAM, because at least the Non-Unified RAM doesn’t create hardware bottlenecks.

…but that has nothing at all to do with the way the Xbox 360 is designed. Remember, the Xbox 360 is incredibly far ahead of its time in terms of design and technology.

For example, the Xbox 360 was the first hardware to ever use the revolutionary Unified Shader technology. PC graphics cards didn’t see Unified Shader technology until January of 2007, yet the Xbox 360 was using it in late 2005! That truly is revolutionary and amazing!

The same thing can be said with the multi-core design of the Xbox 360. The Xbox 360 has three 3.2Ghz PowerPC CPU processors. Ever since the PowerPC was used in Sega’s Model 3 arcade hardware in 1996, it has been common knowledge that the Power PC is the best CPU ever designed for videogame use. Using three PowerPC CPU cores was a revolutionary idea, because PCs in 2005 were bragging about “dual-core” technology…yet the Xbox 360 was already using a “tri-core” design!

eDRAM really is another incredible example of the RAM advantage that the Xbox 360 has over the PS3, and even the PC. eDRAM is something that PC games will not be optimized for until the Longhorn Operating System from Microsoft using DirectX 11 is released. Yet the Xbox 360 has been using it since 2005!

The reason why the Xbox 360 is so much superior to the Playstation 3 in all of these areas is because the Xbox 360 had so much more talent and skill involved in the engineering design of the system. Nearly 2,300 (yes, twenty-three hundred) engineers helped design the Xbox 360. But only slightly more than 200 people were involved in the design of the Playstation 3.

It really did hurt the overall design of the Playstation 3 when Sony saw how much superior the Xbox 360 was, and then was forced to quickly redesign the Playstation 3 in a way that made it more difficult to program and more expensive. Sony ended up using only one Cell CPU instead of the two that were originally planned, and Sony was forced to include a GPU that was not originally planned in the design. What’s worse is that even though Sony knew ATI was designing a custom GPU using the revolutionary new Unified Shader technology in the Xbox 360, Sony couldn’t afford to do anything similar. As a result, Sony was forced to include a generic Nvidia graphics card that really was based on four-year old technology that was outdated.

The fact is, Xbox 360 is the best piece of videogame hardware ever designed. Legendary game programmer John Carmack points out that nothing compares to the Xbox 360 in terms of videogame hardware and overall programming environment that is so developer friendly with virtually no hardware bottlenecks.

But, we can talk and argue all we want, the software is the proof. Here is what we know for sure:

    * Xbox 360 games are rated higher than Playstation 3 games 95% of the time.

    * Many times, the Xbox 360 versions of games aren’t just a “little bit” better…many times the Xbox 360 versions of games are a LOT better!

For example, Orange Box got scores of 95% on Xbox 360 and was Game of the Year. But the PS3 version was relesed two months later and received scores of only 80%…it wasn’t nearly as good as the Xbox 360 version.

    * Playstation 3 receives virtually no third-party exclusive games

    * Xbox 360 receives plenty of third-party exclusive games

    * Even when the Playstation 3 is the “Lead Development Platform,” the Xbox 360 versions of games often end up better than the Playstation 3 versions.

For example, Soul Calibur 4 is a game where the PS3 was the Lead Development Platform. Yet the Xbox 360 version of Soul Calibur 4 has resolution that is 40% higher! The Xbox 360 version runs at a resolution of 1365x960p, while the PS3 version runs at only 1280x720p…Plus the Xbox 360 version includes rumble, achievements, and custom in game music…all things that aren’t supported in the PS3 version.

    * Resolution and framerates are two of the areas that represent the performance of the RAM…and the Xbox 360 versions of software virtually always have smoother framerates and resolution that is equal or higher than the Playstation 3 versions. Sometimes, the Xbox 360 versions of games have TWICE the framerate as the Playstation 3 versions of games!

NO DOUBT ABOUT IT…Xbox 360 has superior hardware than the Playstation 3 in the area of RAM, GPU, CPU design, and every other important factor. The only key area where the PS3 has an advantage over the Xbox 360 is “space” on a disc; however, this is an advantage that is not noticed in over 99% of games, because literally less than 1% of games require more than one DVD of space…and now that the Xbox 360 lets games be placed on the hard drive, it doesn’t really matter anyways, because the discs can be written to the hard drive so that you don’t need to switch them at all.

  • Justin

That is the biggest load of crap that I have ever seen, first of all you continue to tell me that having unified ram is a plus but you cannot give me a single real reason why, and lets be honest there isn’t one. There will always be a bottleneck at the bus side when you integrate your VRAM, this holds true to both PC and Console. Second of all you need to look at the big picture, very few games suffer from framerate issues and the ones that do were either horrible ports i.e. Orange Box, or developed by tired companies who refuse to learn new API programming. Then we get to the PPC or Power PC Core which actually is the platform for BOTH consoles, the advantage with the PS3 is very simple if you have one master core at 3.2 Ghz completely dedicated to system management, then a second at the same speed dedicated to processing the content being streamed to it, the second core can fire of instructions to the 6 other cores for rudimentary operation such as different object’s physics movements. The 360 has 3 main cores two of which can process API data but one of which has to route both threads. I happen to be a strong supporter of good compression technology and the 360 supports a lot of it, the PS3 wasn’t designed for it so much of the data that isn’t API data must be fed RAW whereas the 360 can process compressed data, fortunately this is a firmware concept and not a hardware one, so with the video pipelines of which each can run uncompressed 1920×1080 resolution in progressive scan, is the PS3 was using compression technology it would not only have a leg up over 360 but it would make a huge leap over 360. But for me a lot of this was very little of the equation…

The Xbox in every way imaginable tries to get customers to pay more money for technology that is far cheaper market priced. For example, you have the 120GB hard drive which STILL retails for 150 dollars, lets be frank here a 120GB hard drive is what, like 60 dollars now? The PS3 allows user to install ANY hard drive they wish, just as long as it conforms to standard laptop SATA and considering a 320GB hard drive is only 129.99 right now I think in terms of hard drive space the PS3 has the advantage. Then we can start talking about multimedia, I have to say my elite was one of the best and cheapest network media players available, there was very little that is could not play, in fact the only thing I could that it choked on completely was DIVX video with AC3 audio, which for most people is not a huge deal BUT, the Xbox does not allow content to be stored to the local disk from ANY outside source other then audio CDs, which seems funny running concurrent with the ability to PAY for video and MP3s. The Elite was a bungle because it would likely cost a elite owner thousands of dollars to fill the drive based solely on the fact the user have NO other choice then go to Microsoft when they want anything. We also have to face another fact, media streaming uses an enormous amount of bandwidth which I much prefer the 10/100/1000 connection for the PS3 as opposed to the old 10/100 connection the xbox offers. Then we have something else to consider…

Peripherals: All and I do mean every single peripheral for the 360 is proprietary and fairly expensive whereas the ps3 uses all STANDARD peripheral technologies for everything except the camera which agreeably is a gimmick for both consoles. I bought a 30 dollar laser mouse and wireless keyboard for the ps3 and turns out the free bluetooth headset that came with my nokia works as a wireless headset, the 360 wireless headset is STILL 50 dollars, or if I prefer a wired one as they tend to be of far better quality I can use literally ANY one I like. And say I want to use an external hard drive which I do because I swapped the measely 40 for the 250 I had purchased and now the 40 is external, I can write to the external to which the 360 can not.

Online: There is no doubt that Xbox live out does PS3′s online experience in quite a few ways for me I liked the available Arcade classics like TMNT and Ikaruga which were both awesome games. The online community is also notably larger for 360. The important factor here though is that most of what I like is available free with a silver membership, and the one thing everyone wants is to play online and for the games that really count like COD4, the experience is literally identical so screw paying Microsoft 50 dollars a year to use my own already expensive internet connection.

  • Game Designer

    Justin,

You are the one who is very incorrect, even when discussions basic concepts.

For example, the 120GB Xbox 360 hard drive does not cost $149; it now costs only $119…And you really would never need one that large now that the Pro system comes with a 60GB hard drive.

You are also making a fundamental mistake when you say that the Playstation 3 has 6 “cores.” Playstation 3 does NOT uses “multi-core” technology the way the Xbox 360 and the PC do. The Playstation 3 uses “parallel processing” the way the Sega Saturn did.

Xbox 360 has three 3.2Ghz Power PC CPU processors, each with two Threads to “send” instructions with. The Xbox 360 only needs to worry about “sending” instructions to the GPU and the overall CPU.

Playstation 3 has one 3.2Ghz CPU processor, and it has only two Threads that are capable of “sending” instructions with. The HUGE BOTTLENECK with this design is that the Playstation 3 has six SPE sub-processors, each with one Thread that is ASKING for a Threaded instruction from the CPU. Those SPE sub-processors to not “send” instructions; they receive instructions from the CPU.

The way the one person said that the PS3 has only two arms (CPU Threads) trying to juggle six balls (SPE sub-processors) is a perfect example of the Playstation 3 programming envrionment.

With the Xbox 360 it is literally the exact opposite. The example that says the Xbox 360 has six arms (CPU Threads) but only needs to juggle two balls (a CPU and GPU) is a perfect example of the Xbox 360 programming environment. The majority of programmers absolutely love designing games on the Xbox 360, but they hate designing games on the Playstation 3.

If we are being “honest” we need to state the facts. It isn’t just games like Orange Box that have framerate problems on the Playstation 3, even though the Xbox 360 versions of the games run perfectly smooth.

Everything from Assassins Creed, to F.E.A.R. to Splinter Cell have huge framerate advantages for the Xbox 360. In fact, some of those games are downright disappointing on the Playstation 3, even though the Xbox 360 versions run fine.

All-Pro Football is a game that runs at 30 frames per second on Playstation 3, but it doesn’t run at a “steady” 30 frames per second. The Xbox 360 version of All-Pro Football runs at 60 frames per second, and it is always “steady.”

F.E.A.R. is another game where the Xbox 360 version runs “steady” at 30 frames per second. The Playstation 3 version tries to run at 30 frames per second, but it often dips below 20 frames per second and gets so bad at times that there is “screen-flicker” and “slow-motion” similar to what used to happen in the 8-bit videogame era.

Splinter Cell on the Playstation 3 is absolutely terrible.

The list goes on and on and on…

I want to answer your question about Unified RAM, though.

The 512MB of Unified RAM is ALWAYS being used! There is NEVER a second when the RAM is being wasted.

The same cannot be said for the Playstation 3.

For example, 256MB of the RAM of the PS3 is devoted to the CPU, and 256MB of RAM is Video RAM. The CPU does have the ability to access the Video RAM when there is a need; although, it loses a great deal of efficiency. However, the GPU of the Playstation 3 can NEVER access the CPU RAM. This means 256MB is the absolute limit for the PS3.

The same cannot be said for the Xbox 360. There are plenty of times in games like Gears of War, Orange Box, Lost Planet, Halo 3, and others where more than 256MB of the Unified RAM is being used in a way that would normally be handled by the Video RAM.

    ADVANTAGE: Xbox 360

Also, the way that you talk about a “bottleneck” when using Unified RAM does NOT apply to the Xbox 360, because it uses the INCREDIBLY EFFICIENT form of RAM known as eDRAM. 10MB of eDRAM is a HUGE amount! That right there is one of the reasons why the Xbox 360 games have such smooth framerates compared to the Playstation 3 games which often have unsteady framerates and lower resolution textures.

One final RAM advantage the Xbox 360 has over the Playstation 3 is the simple fact that the Xbox 360 Operating System is so much more efficient than the Playstation 3 Operating System. The Xbox 360 OS requires only 32MB to use. The PS3 OS uses 96MB of RAM, which is a total waste! This means the Xbox 360 has 480MB of RAM to use for gaming, while the PS3 has only 416MB of RAM to use for gaming.

But, none of this really matters…at this point in time it is ALL ABOUT GAMES…This is the THIRD HOLIDAY SEASON for the Playstation 3…yet the Playstation 3 still has ZERO games available in certain genres.

Real-Time Strategy is a genre that has gotten SO MUCH MORE POPULAR as a result of all the awesome RTS games on the Xbox 360…yet the Playstation 3 STILL has ZERO games in that genre!

Every Xbox 360 system comes with a headset…the same cannot be said for the Playstation 3. In fact, NO PLAYSTATION 3 system comes with high-definition cables of ANY KIND!

If you have a wireless Xbox 360 controller, you essentially have a wireless headset, too, because the headset plugs directly into the controller. That’s as easy as it gets.

Even new games like Soul Calibur 4 do NOT include features like Rumble for the Playstation 3, even though the Xbox 360 version does include Rumble. That means if you spent $60 on the PS3 dualshock 3 controller, it was a waste of money!

Xbox 360 is a much better game system. Xbox 360 has more games. Xbox 360 has far more exclusive games. Xbox 360 multi-platform games are rated higher. Xbox 360 has a better online service…Xbox 360 has Rumble, Achievements, and Custom Music in EVERY game…Playstation 3 cannot compare to all that.

Again you reasoning is tainted both in your facts and your reasoning. The Cell is a multi-core processor the difference is that when ps3 passes data from its processor to its XDRAM it can do so along two separate pathways as opposed to one (PS3). Only the 6 SPEs are linear, the two process cores are independant. The advantage of having two mother cores and 6 daughter cores is integral hyper threading. When hyper threading was introduced it allowed a single core instance to essentially twist the data from 2 separate threads, of coarse the added performance required a very high clock which the P4 offered in its P4 Extreme 3.2Ghz but this is still limited to the single core available and the processor still has to do all the work. The Cell is ingenious because it takes to hyperthreading cores and allows the daughter cores to do the grunt work whereas the process cores only divvy up the data. I can tell that you have never done any serious programming before because you are unfamiliar about the advantage of this concept. Using the same concept as you, in the form of juggling balls it would be equivalent to having 2 arms that can juggle six balls but juggling 3 balls per hand, at 3.2 Ghz per hand this is relatively easy and when the data must be passed on it can be passed via VRAM rather then unified system ram which is not nearly as efficient. You are right that developers embrace the 360 far more readily at least in the past they did, a lot of this has to do with it being far easier to program for but this has little to do with the technical capabilities but rather the complexity of the code, instructions that are sent to the cell cannot be easily debugged once it has left the original core and if the data is sent to the wrong SPC or routed back with wrong results it gets very complicated to resolve the issue or sometimes even find it. Fortunately we are starting to see a lot more developers hopping on board to the Cell PPC processor, as proven with 2008/2009′s PS3s 13 exclusives as opposed to 360′s measely 5. This is not me saying xbox sucks, I still loved my xbox, I just sold it because it seems RROD is eventually an inevitability.

    Justin,

When all 12 months of 2008 have passed, the number of exclusives that the Xbox 360 has is FAR greater than the Playstation 3!…In fact, the Xbox 360 will have 24 exclusives that are 100% exclusive to the Xbox 360…that doesn’t count the third-party games that are released for both Xbox 360 and PC, but NOT for Playstation 3…it also doesn’t count the dozens of games released exclusively for Xbox Live Arcade.

For crying out loud, by the time 2008 comes to an end the Xbox 360 will have more exclusive games in the genre of RPG for 2008 than the Playstation 3 has in all genres for 2008…and the scary thing is, that is NOT an exaggeration.

Justin, once again you refuse to acknowledge that the Playstation 3 is based on “parallel processing.” Playstation 3 does NOT use “multi-core” processing the way that the Xbox 360 and PC do.

Sony might “refer” to it as a multi-core setup, but Sony’s definition is very definition of what Intel and Microsoft refer to as a “multi-core” setup.

Also, I think that your analysis of juggling is an excellent one.

Previously I said that I thought it was very accurate to say that the PS3 has two arms (CPU Threads capable of Sending instruction) that are being asked to juggle six balls (SPE sub-processors asking to Receive instructions from the CPU)…This really is an excellent example of the difficult programming environment of the Playstation 3.

You are now saying that the situation can also be described by saying that the PS3 has two arms (CPU Threads sending instructions to the six SPE sub-processors), with each arm having three balls to juggle (since six divided by two is three).

You claim that this will be easy, because juggling at 3.2Ghz is an easy thing. Unfortunately, that simply is not true, which is why most Playstation 3 games, including games that were released this month, still have plenty of framerate problems, even though the Xbox 360 and PC versions do NOT have those problems.

Justin, you NEED to realize that Sony’s original design for the Playstation 3 called for TWO of the Cell CPU processors. Sony originally wanted FOUR Threads to Send instructions to those SPE sub-processors. Ken Kutaragi basically said that the SPE sub-processors on the second CPU would almost never be used. He said that the whole reason for having a second CPU was to strictly use the extra two Threads to control the 6 SPE sub-processors on one of the chips more efficiently…The PPE also would have been used much more often with two Cell CPU processors.

If Sony would have kept the design of two Cell CPU processors, it would have resulted in a much easier program environment that is far more developer friendly than the current design of the Playstation 3 that shares so much in common with the difficult Sega Saturn development environment.

The problem was, with two Cell CPU processors, the PS3 didn’t have a GPU…and with no GPU, the PS3 had graphics that were not even close to the Xbox 360 with its custom-designed GPU. As a result, Sony was forced to add a GPU, which meant they were forced to remove one the Cell CPUs…it make the system way too expensive, and it made the system way too difficult to develop.

You NEED to realize that Playstation 3 programmers are NOT Harlem Globetrotter basketball players who can juggle 3 balls with one hand, while simultaneously juggle 3 balls with the other hand!… It’s not a matter of what Sony “claims” the Playstation 3 has the “potential” to do. We saw with both the Playstation 3 and the Sega Saturn that the “potential” marketing scheme is a joke that programmers don’t fall for.

Even if there are situations that don’t involve gameplay where we “can” juggle that way for a little while, once actual gameplay starts it will only be a short time before you see framerate problems and “muddy” looking textures.

RROD is something that hasn’t existed in the Xbox 360 for the last two hardware generations. The “Falcon” hardware generation eliminated the RROD, and the new “Jasper” generation that we are currently living in not only eliminated the RROD, but it also eliminated the noisy DVD drive.

Let’s let the software do the talking…like the saying says, “Actions speak louder than words,” and “the proof is in the pudding.”

Fallout 3 is one of the biggest games of the year. It has been rated 10 out of 10 on the Xbox 360 by several sources already.

But the Playstation 3 version of Fallout 3 isn’t nearly as good as the Xbox 360 or PC versions.

Here’s what one of the IGN websites had to say:

“The latest issue of PSM3, the UK’s first dedicated PlayStation 3 magazine, has an exclusive review of Bethesda’s FallOut 3. The usual suspects has already posted scans of the article on the Internet, revealing that the editors of PSM3 admitted that “the PS3 version compares poorly to its Xbox [360] and PC counterparts.”

Today, the PSM3 staff tried to rectify this statement by saying that “the PS3 version looks the same as on Xbox, but things in the distance are slightly jaggier/rougher, the textures seem ‘muddier’ up-close and the frame rate is choppier, especially during the last few story missions.”

Too little, too late. The damage has been done.”

Justin, do you see the reasons why the Playstation 3 version is rated lower then the Xbox 360 and PC versions. It’s the same thing as always:

    * Framerates that are choppy

    * Lower resolution that produce “jagged” images

    * Textures that are “muddier” and less vivid, because the GPU of the Playstation 3 isn’t nearly as advanced as the GPU of the Xbox 360

It doesn’t matter whether the PS3 is the “Lead Development” system or not. Like we saw with Soul Calibur 4, the PS3 was the Lead Development system, yet the Xbox 360 version had smoother framerates, 40% higher resolution, rumble, Achievements, and custom music…

Xbox 360 versions of games have always been better than Playstation 3 versions of games, new games like Soul Calibur 4 and Fallout 3 prove that isn’t going to change anytime soon.

  • Justin

No one said it was easy for programmers, but at 3.2Ghz it is easy from a technical standpoint. Second of all if we are going frame drops lets talk about games that actually experience it. I have been through Soul Caliber on both consoles and saw problems with neither. If you want a good example of a bad port, look at Orange Box. Orange Box was one of my biggest disappointments but frame dropping wasn’t the disappointing part of it, actually the texture mapping and poor lighting was the huge downfall here but that severely hurts the experience. It is a little hard to make any judgments on Fallout 3 because I could care less about current RPGs, I have never been a fan of anything Bethesda has produced personally and Bethesda has a history of bad programming for the PS3, just like RARE having a bad rep for 360 i.e. Perfect Dark. Functional threads or not, in the end it all comes down to raw data and the PS3 has the 360 beat by a VERY large margin. Lets look at just the hardware alone…

Xbox Ethernet= 10/100T wired only (wireless 100$ extra)
    PS3 Ethernet=10/100/1000T wired and wireless G capable
    Xbox PPC Processor Performance= 1TFLOP
PS3 Cell PPC Processor Performance=2 TFLOPs
    360 HD Video Output=HDMI 1.2×1
PS3 HD Video Output=HDMI 1.3×1 with bandwidth support for 2x
360 Optical Drive=12x DVD Drive capable of dual layer DVD at 8.4GB
PS3 Optical Drive=BD-ROM capable of up to 50GB of data.

  • Paul

LOL at the PS3 fanboys. Yes you wasted that money.

Microsoft learnt a long time ago that success came around by massaging the development community for your platform. Sony have dropped a big one here and are lucky you are all so blind as to believe their hype.

The power of the cell architecture will never be realised, why should developers spend milions to gain a 10-20% benefit.

And that 10Mb of cache on the GPU on the xbox gives the xbox upto 500Gb/s bandwidth compared to the crappy 50Gb/s on the PS3, which is also why the GPU on the PS3 which is inferior to the XBox GPU(Thats Fact BTW) cannot even achieve its full potential in any case.

Great in practice but for consoles a bad choice.

Sony has only its own ego to blame for its demise in the market.

Save your money buy an XBOX 360 or wait for Wii HD.

  • Justin

I was granted access to the instruction set manuals for the Cell BE and from my close understanding the Cell could easily execute instructions designed for the PPC 540 chip that the 360 is based on. From taking a look at what parallel computing has to offer in the form of Nvidia’s Cuda I have no less doubt that the PS3 can very easily stamp the crap out of low cache the 540 offered in the 360. We can already see the not so lazy companies squeezing out high performance optimizations that were no doubt only introduced fully in games made within the last 2 years for PC. Killzone 2 feature motion blur which is an incredibly graphics taxing effect that has really only graced Crysis and Crysis Warhead in full effect. As it stands most Xbox exclusives make it to PC at the very least eventually and my computer makes a joke out of both consoles. It still stands to fact that the Cell architecture as well as the GPU that feeds from it feed from simple parallel processing which has time and time again been a proven method for producing the best graphics imaginable. Games that look good on Xbox that have been ported to PS3 look terrible because they were made by companies that haven’t resolved the changes involved in massively threaded execution i.e. Valve, Bethesda, and Ubisoft. These companies also have to satisfy the PC market which undoubtedly has much higher standards than consoles. Crysis Warhead with all of its settings set to enthusiast makes my machine hot and I am running extremely premium made components, so if these companies cannot fill their entire market they will inevitably fail or get bought by EA.

whats his name Kim Naroz give him a job!..anybody that can get into that much detail deserves one unlike some journalist that say..”uh the 360 has reached its limits?”..with no facts to back it when they should be saying DVD has reached its limits.

nice read by the way though there were some wordin’ mistakes but it happens to eveybody..but it seems like you’re hatin’ on him since he brought facts to the table since polygons do count in gaming since all games are polygon based..shaders and such just knock out the jaggies and both consoles are prety good at that though i’m getting annoyed with the ps3s blur everything effect instead of using anti-aliasing..lazy if you ask me.

  • Justin

This crap makes me laugh, all the old hardware junkines gawfing at how they can produce 500,000,000 polygons in slow multi_threading and giving polygon numbers that only utilize the stream processors and one processing unit. Combine all of PS3′s SPE’s plus its stream cores and you can expect 900,000,000 polygon performance, so not only does it beat the piss out of xbox, it probably beats the piss out of the next console Microsoft has to offer.

  • Justin

Actually I am pretty sure that anti-aliasing is entirely designed to knock out jaggies. That’s what anti-aliasing is. The difference here is that games that only high end PC can produce are using effects that take advantage of the way the human eyes and brain perceive things and the ps3 monopolizes on this. I have no reason to war here, my PC can beat the ever living @#$%^ out of both my PS3 and 360 but I have to look at this from a developer’s perspective (being as I am a developer). Both companies are struggling because there have been huge advancements direct proceeded by launch such as cheaper more advanced die processes. But lets look at this from a real persective and make it easy for the game nuts that have no idea as to what goes into developing. Anyone who has a good gaming PC knows that the processor is just a feeding trough for games and handles little more than physics and data bus this is where the PS3 is superior in spades. A dual channel GPU opens up the possibility for AFR and SFR which could easily take a games and double its performance or even take a game that produces a substandard 24FPS on the 360, with AFR you could see 48 to 50. Poor framerates are due to bad developers not bad console designers. I have seen what massive threading can do and it is truly amazing a program that can yield all 4 logical threads of an i7 can shatter the Core 2 extremes at triple the price. In reaity is takes a lot of FPU time to produce effect like motion blur and texture mapping is FAR beyond just removing jaggies. Advanced texture mapping produces the real meat and potatoes of a worlds detail. A 3D opject can have infinite polgons and still look like a VirtualBoy game without texture mapping. I see one advantage to 360 and that is that is has a community accessible developing environment and the PS3 requires a 10,000 dollar monstrosity to alpha on.

    Forza Motor Sport 3 – Halo 3 ODST – Alan wake – Fable 2–3- Splinter Cell Conviction – Gears Of War 2–3 – … SORRY PS3!

Oh ho! here came 2009 and you are eating, EATING, your words aren’t you Kim Naroz hahaha. That so-full-of-crap posting that incited such huge discussions based of half-baked conjectures.

  • Nhoj

Are you retarded? This article is from 2007. Do you know he is now eating his words?

  • john

The article seemed very accurate to me. I own both, and have programmed for both and ps3 is a nightmare….I'd much rather work with 3 cpu's and an impressive GPU at 60 fps….than old unfriendly architecture on the Ps3.

  • Myass

73 Weeks later and those words seem pretty stupid.. PS3 was always the better system it just needed time for developers to get used to it.

Plus, it’s important to remember that the original design of the
Playstation 3 called for the used of TWO Cell CPU processors–each with
two Threads that could Send signals to the SPE subprocessors.
