Japan October Sales: Sony PS3 closing gap on Nintendo Wii

November 6, 2007 | Filed under Gaming, Nintendo Wii, Sony Playstation 3

Japan October Sales
The Sony PlayStation 3 console has started to make some ground on the Nintendo Wii in Japan’s October sales; the PS3 was being outsold 6-to-1 by the Nintendo Wii in Japan.

October 07 saw the PS3 close the gap, with the Nintendo Wii selling 110,415 units and the PS3 selling 47,183 units in Japan.

It’s hard to tell if this is a more long term trend until we see the next few month’s figures, but that will include the very important Christmas month.

The facts are that the Wii still outsells the PS3 2-to-1 in Japan and that might have something to-do with the price.

Nintendo are very happy at the moment as they are apparently Japan’s third-most valuable company thanks to high demand for the DS handheld player and Wii.

Please, enough of these articles suggesting that the Wii is LOSING ground. Show me the month that the PS3 outsold the Wii. That’s right… it hasn’t happened yet. Headlines like this belong in the trash. The line should be “Wii sales slow, as PS3’s stagnate.”

  2. Kevin on November 6th, 2007 4:16 pm

To suggest that PS3 is “closing” the gap is completely illogical. being outsold 6:1 and than being outsold 2:1 does not mean the gap is closing it just means the gap is widening at a slower pace. For the gap to close the PS3 would have to be out selling the Wii, not be outsold by less. If you spot me 10 points and than I outscore by 1 point for the rest of the way you will never catch me!!

O.K, this is the last time i’ll post this: THE WII IS NOT IN DIRECT COMPITETION WITH THE PS3 - PERIOD/FULL STOP - the Wii is a secondary console as far as hardcore gamers (the ones who spend the most money on games), after the PS3 and Xbox 360. Comparing the Wii to the PS3 is like comparing a Seaga Mega Drive to a PSone - duh!

  5. ma3rouf on November 6th, 2007 5:57 pm

dumba!ss kevin he didnt say the gap was closed but said it was getting narrower probably going to close

    ur stupid

  6. Zman the Wise on November 6th, 2007 6:02 pm

That’s right the wii has ceased to be in direct competition with the PS3 since it became clear that the PS3 would never catch up. Gimme a break James.

Comparing the Wii to the PS3 is like comparing the PSone to the Dreamcast-duh!

  8. Jason on November 6th, 2007 7:24 pm

With the PS3 being twice the cost of a Nintendo Wii - that means they are almost level pegging in terms of revenue that they generate.

The Wii to the PS3 is like comparing oranges to apples. They may be round but they are completely different beasts targeted at a very different audience.

When will fools stop trying to compare these 2 consoles!

What sells more a Porche or a ford. The ford of coarse. Its cheap and serves people needs. But there are a few of us that need more than that. We need Horse power we need more features so we buy a porche. The same goes for the Wii and Ps3.

If you want a console to have fun with then buy the Wii. If you are looking for graphics than buy a good PC. The truth is, graphics on the PC will always whoop anything a console can ever produce. In 6 months the PS3 will be obsolete graphics wise anyway. Meanwhile, a few upgrades later and my computer will be on top again :).

  11. dan on November 6th, 2007 9:28 pm

Dan that is the most dumpest thing i have heard. PS3 are focring there technicial on us & its crap. PS3 is finshed. The games dont look that good even, they have lack of memory & they stink. All game compaines know how smart nintendo is & are joining them. Dan its time to sell your PS3 & but the WII ohhhh yeayh wii

  12. The Truth on November 6th, 2007 10:03 pm

    Wii = Metroid Prime/Zelda: Twilight Princess/Wii Sports/Mario Galaxy/Mario Kart

    PS3 = BlueRay

Remind me again… which one is for Hardcore gamers?

    James???????????????????????????????????

  13. The Truth on November 6th, 2007 10:07 pm

    One More Thing!!!

PS3 may get more games later on and make a run at the Wii. Somehow, I don’t think that the PS3 will ever attract enough gamers (hardcore or otherwise) to compete with the Wii. HDDVD players at Wal-Mart for $95.00. That was the PS3’s last chance for my business going down the drain.

    Peace!!!

  14. Keith on November 6th, 2007 11:13 pm

    PS3 has:
Ratchet & Clank Future: Tools of Destruction
    Warhawk
    The Eye of Judgment
    Resistance: Fall of Man
    Tekken 5: Dark Ressurection
    Heavenly Sword
    Folklore

Who said PS3 doesn’t have games?

  15. Sahir on November 7th, 2007 2:48 am

The PS3 can’t be closing a gap if the Wii is STILL outselling it. It can only start to close the gap if it actually starts to sell more consoles with the Wii…Which it never will.

  16. kirin777 on November 7th, 2007 2:58 am

Hey The Truth, u so stupid. Show me that WalMart sale HD DVD player for $95.00. You dumb fuck, u have no money to own PS3 or Xbox. Go get a job then we’ll talk, otherwise shut the fuck up.

  17. J-dizzle on November 7th, 2007 3:15 am

    The truth,
you seriously are one dumb fuck! first off, two of the games you listed aren’t even out yet. two of the other games have been out for almost a year now suck some serious balls. and ive never even heard of metroid prime.

  18. Zman the Wise on November 7th, 2007 4:33 am

Jason, that’s actually what I used to think, but I found out they don’t actually produce the same amount of revenue, let me break it down for ya.

The XBOX360 and the PS3 are actually sold at a loss. Sony Produces the PS3 at a price of around $800-900, and selld is for $400-500. The reason for this is that, assuming enough people buy the console, they can make their money back on software royalties, bluray DVD sales, and first party software sales. Microsoft does the same thing, its a strategy they used with the first XBOX.
The Wii on the other hand is produced for around 200 and sold for 250 so it makes $50 per console. The only revenu generating console is the wii.
So with the XBOX and the PS3 are you getting more bang for your buck hardware wise? Absolutely. The companies? Not so much.

  19. Zman the Wise on November 7th, 2007 4:44 am

So far both companies are losing a lot of money , but that can be absorbed by the parent companies until they make it back. Microsoft is about to move into their first profit quarter since the launch of the original XBOX, Sony, is in deep trouble at the moment. Not to day they can’t make it back, not at all. For all we know SONY could catch on fire and start selling like crazy, catch up to the Wii and the xbox in a year or two and eventually generate profit. So far though, they are having dissapointing sales.

On a completely unrelated note Kirin, what’s your problem? Jeeze there’s no call for that kind of language just because someone disagrees with you. Why do you even have the 777 at the end of your name? It’s no big man. People disagree on a lot of things. I know the PS3 XBOX360 are far more powerful than the wii. I also know the wii has a great lineup of the games I like and I think the potential of the wii remote is just awesome. It’s just my opinion that those things are better than amazing (yes I can freely say they’re amazing) graphics. You gonna cuss me out too?

PS- to all, analogies are worthless

  20. The Truth on November 7th, 2007 5:11 am

    Kirin,

You need to go back to school, and learn to speak. Your lack of knowledge of the English language just made you look stupid. Check this out:

    http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2007/11/02/wal-mart-best-buy-chop-toshiba-hd-dvd-player-prices-by-100-ag/

Next time do your research before opening up your pie hole.

    Have a great day!!!

  21. The Truth Speaks Again on November 7th, 2007 5:16 am

    Kirin,

What are you, like 5 years old. Go back to school, and learn how to speak English. Also, before you open your mouth again, I will save you the humiliation. Wal-Mart and Best Buy were both selling sub 100 dollar Toshiba HD DVD players last week. If you think that it will be a one time thing, think again. They have announced their Christmas lineup, and guess what… TOSHIBA HD DVD players for 95 dollars. Honestly!!! Do your research before opening up your pie hole.

    Have a great day!!!

  22. bluntman on November 7th, 2007 1:34 pm

How can Sony be closing the gap??? Their still selling less than Wii so its impossible to be closing the gap.Wii to PS3 ratio mite get smaller though

  23. eddie on November 7th, 2007 5:54 pm

Truth, that $95 HD DVD player is only 1080i, it doesn’t do 1080p.

Zman the Not So Wise, all hardware manufacturers lose money on the sale of their systems, Nintendo included. Always have and always will. That’s the business model. They make it back in game sales. No one can buy a game for a system they don’t own. Hardware manufacturers would give the systems away if they could. Nintendo’s Wii costs much more than the $250 they charge to make.

  24. CMan on November 8th, 2007 1:05 am

No Eddie, as hard as it is to believe, Nintendo actually is making money off the sale of the Wii console itself. This website discusses it: http://www.gamespot.com/events/wiilaunch/story.html?sid=6157690

  25. Zman the Wise on November 8th, 2007 1:36 am

    Eddie,
You’re wrone, but I DO like what you’ve done to my name there! lol. All in good fun I guess.
