Everywhere I look online I keep hearing the name “Linux” more and more with many products and services, my Sony PS3 can have Linux installed as an optional extra, Google has just released news of more workings with Linux and the new Asus Eee UMPC also has this operating system installed.
What then confuses me is that I have read a few articles of late saying that the demand for the Linux operating system has been falling.
This could just be that these blogs are talking rubbish, but let’s hear from you Linux gurus.
Is demand for the Linux operating system falling or increasing?

i’m not a linux guru, buy i see it is getting more and more popular, i see poeple get in touch with linux that never really cared about an os. maybe because everybody tried to avoid vista as long as possible.
The “falling demand for linux” is servers, and it has yet to be established whether this is a trend. Furthermore the study focuses on particular market segments.
Obviously demand for linux desktops has been slowly increasing, and the demand for embedded linux is growing faster the the number of new embedded devices which is huge.
People wonder when or if linux will “win”. The statment doesn’t really mean anything. Linux is already ubiquitous. It’s everywhere. Look inside your phone, your DVR, your internet router, you’ll find linux.
The fact is that the desktop is going the way of the dinosaur. Software as a service is everyday becoming a new business standard. Microsoft knows this which is why they are investing a huge amount of time into getting their servers to catch up with *nix.
It is unsurprising that after releasing such a major boost in technology they would see a modest gain in market share… but it won’t last. Microsoft and Apple and most of the other major technology corporations of the 80s believe that the way to control the market is to control the consumer (with apologies to IBM and SUN). Just consider the special adapters your g4 requires, or the choices you have when administering a windows server.
Demand for linux isn’t slipping, it’s simply expanding horizontally.
