Call of Duty 4 Will Only Run At 720p: Another Playstation 3 Failure?

Another Playstation 3 Failure?

Although gamers claim that the game looks amazing, one gaming fan has reported that Call Of Duty 4 will only run at 720p. This is despite the back of the box claiming that it supports 720p, 1080i and 1080p. The gamer, who owns a Samsung Full HD TV can’t seem to get the game working above 720p.

He has checked the TV, he is using an HDMI 1.3 cable and the Playstation resolution is set at 1080p but nothing seems to change.

Making absolutely sure it wasn’t his television, he tested his other HD games like NBA Street Homecourt, Ninja Gaiden Sigma and LAIR. They all ran at the 1080p like the box said they would.

Are you having problems with Call of Duty 4? Could it be that the game can only run at 720p – what do you think?

From what I understand it will only run in 720 per all the stuff i read on the net.

maybe its a print mistake like ninja gaiden says it supports SIXAXIS control and it doesnt

  • Chris

Woah there, don’t jump to conclusions. A Playstation 3 failure? What the hell are you talking about, you sound like a mindless fanboy. Last time I heard, Call of Duty 4 runs at 720p.

Next time you call something a “failure” take into consideration that the most amazing games you’ll ever see: Resistance, Motorstorm, Ninja Gaiden Sigma E, Heavenly Sword, Eye of Judgment, Warhawk, and Ratchet and Clank, and Metal Gear Solid 4, Haze, LittleBigPlanet, Uncharted, Killzone 2, God of War III, and Gran Turismo 5 to come, are exclusive to the PS3.

Shouldn’t a failure be a system with a 30-40% failure rate? How about a system that relies solely on one franchise that was ridiculously overhyped?

  • hollywooda

hahaha, ohhh chris you sad, sad man……

  • maya

what this individual is referring to is upscaling to 1080p. both 360 and ps3 versions of this particular game is rendered natively @720p. the 360 contains a hardware scalar which automatically upscales to 1080p if your display supports it. this is partly true for the ps3 except it has to be applied by the developer for the game in question. this feature wasn’t implemented for the ps3 version by IW and THIS is what the article refers to (possibly due to system overhead).

is there any practical or significant difference when “UPSCALING” from 720p to 1080? no. it’s certainly no substitute for natively rendered 1080P games which this article blatantly implies (e.g. GT5, Tekken 5:DR, NGS…). so what the shit is it with all the FUD? another PS3 failure? wtf!

when there’s an error in reasoning, such is evident in this case, it is generally referred to as a fallacy; an argument in which the premises given for the conclusion do not provide the needed degree of support. for instance, having just driven a blue car I experience a puncture. So ONLY blue cars suffer punctures.

do you see what i did there? seriously, get some perspective.

  • Numanthia

    I agree fully with Chris.

The xbox 360 is actually this gens first true failure. Both the PS3 and the Wii have sold more units in their first year than the xbox 360 did in it’s first full year.

In the xbox 360′s first year there was 0 great games to buy and only in months 13 (Gears of war) 20 (Bioshock)and 21 (Halo 3) of its release did it have any decent games but considering the horrible quality of the product (30 – 40% failure rate) and only a few great games it is clear that the only real failure is the xbox 360.

It has also been report, several different reviews, that COD 4 is graphically superior on the PS3 vs the xbox 360. At this point it is almost stupid or dumb to buy an xbox 360 for 3 games while the PS3 already has double the quantity of must have games in only 10 months of its release, plus it has blu-ray which rocks.

  • The Only Person with A brain?

    You idiots.

The game runs at 1080i and 1080p as stated on the box. If you have ALL resolutions checked, then CoD4 will send out the native 720p signal.

If you want it upconverted by the PS3, then un-check 720p.

Another failure?!!? lol That’s what you’re parents said.

  • I have brain too

Maybe their parents only have a child…
So, maybe JP was their only failure
    lol

  • Oh dear

Chris comes across as a fanboy to me.

  • martin

To chris, all them games are exclusive, what about all the good exclusive ones to xbox, like ummm gears of war, halo, pgr3 and pgr4, bioshock, the list goes on! i know where i would rather be

to Numanthia, so much of a failureis it, just look at the halo 3 selling stats.
quote”In the xbox 360’s first year there was 0 great games” unquote
you must of missed a 1 out from the start of the 0.

so the ps3 isnt a failure, it could burn down your house, it is probably your main heating supply for your house, you need a seperate house for it because its so big and heavy.

    achivement system?
    come back to that
    rant over
    :)
    xbox360 rules.

  • http://tenkio.com rich

@ Numanthia. lol, silly, retarded fanboy. I seriously doubt what the 360 has done can be considered a failure by anyone with more than half a brain.

Likewise, a game not running at 1080p on the PS3 isn’t a failure, it’s a mistake on the box. You don’t have the fill rate on the PS3 to do much overdraw AND get 1080p. You have to make a choice: ots of shaders or 1080p.

  • stevo

HA HA HA its all expected for a ps3 a FALIURE TAKE MY ADVICE GET A 360 THERE THE BEST!!!!!!!

  • Wayne

Numanthia and Chris, you are clearly PS3 fanboys, judging by your completely biased view of the line up of games available for the Xbox 360.

You (Numanthia) say that there are only 3 great games available for the Xbox 360, and yet it has the highest average software attach rate of any of the next-gen machines.

There are plenty of quality exclusive titles available already on the xbox 360 outside the ones you mentioned, Dead Rising, Condemned, Lost Planet, PGR4, Forza Mortorsport 2, ACE combat 6, DOA4 to name a few. Not to mention some big name future exclusives like Mass Effect,Splinter Cell Conviction, Alan Wake, Halo Wars, Ninja Guiden 2, Too Human and Gears of War 2 are all in the pipeline.

Don’t forget either that the 360 is still the leading development platform for nearly all cross platform titles so everything you’ve seen of games like Resident Evil 5, and GTA IV is all running off Xbox 360 hardware.

Yes, the Xbox 360 has it’s faults, most notably the estimated 30% RRoD failure rate, but even this cannot detract from the fact that it is a very solid gaming platform, with a slew of great games (both exclusive and cross platform) to choose from, and an excellent online experience.

Now, before anyone labels me an Xbox 360 fanboy, I just want to point out that right now I am the proud owner of all 3 next-gen systems, as well as a DS and PSP. I am a proper GAMER, with no blind allegiance to any platform and all I care about is playing quality games, irrespective of what system they are released for.

What is with all these Xbox, playstation, and Nintendo fanboys, who feel the need to constantly harp on about how their chosen system kicks the ass of all the other systems, like they were some sort of visionary for making the correct, inspired choice. You are all pathetic and juvenile and your incessant flaming on these forums is an unceasing source of irritation.

    Play games NOT consoles!

I feel I should comment on the actual article while I’m here. COD4 is being rendered at 720p on both systems and according to Infinity Ward they should look identical in their native format. If there is some issue with the PS3 not being able to upscale it to 1080p, then I’m pretty sure that somebody will be able to fix it with a patch of some sort. It’s hardly “another PS3 failure” (bit of an overly-sensationalistic title designed to attract attention to a nothing piece of writing methinks) just another one of those little glitches that will continue to rear their heads on all next-gen systems. With all the effort that goes into making a big next-gen game, with HD grapics, advanced physics, etc, the huge increase in costs, and the pressure on developers to hit release deadlines, small quibbles like this are going to become the norm. They are nothing to get worked-up about and we just need to get used to them, much in the same way as PC gamers have been doing for years.

  • Amused

lol @ I have brain too

If you really had a brain, you’d realise that by clicking on this post just to insult the writer you’re earning him money! The title is there simply to attract fanboys whether it’s true or not – job done i’d say!

Don’t state you have a brain if you really don’t!

  • Bill

If it CLAIMS to run in 1080P and don’t, its a failure.

  • zs450

All they have to do is hire some kid with a sharpie to black out the 1080p and all will be well.

  • The Professor

IT WILL RUN AT 1080P on the PS3

check your facts before looking stupid AND biased

  • Chris

First off, kudos to Wayne for the great post. That’s the way to think, play the games, but take into consideration that it’s hard to play the game when people are flagrantly accusing the Playstation 3 of being a failure left and right.

Oh martin… martin, martin, martin. I respect your opinion, but you have to escape from the marketing cocoon of gaming and understand that sales don’t make a game good. Sure, Halo 3 sold ridiculously well, and had incredible hype, but in my opinion, Halo 3 did not live up to the hype at all. Think about this; Did Halo 3′s graphics and gameplay really live up to having it’s own drinks, consoles, controllers, clothing, costumes, cars, and headsets? Hey, Halo 3 is a decent game, but I can name plenty of other games that are much better, without the millions of dollars of advertising used like Microsoft and Halo 3.

Also, you bring up how the Playstation 3 runs. Last time I checked, and saying this from an unbiased, factual point of view, the Xbox 360 is louder than the Playstation 3.

Achievements are fine, and the Playstation 3 is getting trophies with the upcoming Home network. Trust me, I went crazy getting ahcievements on my 360 last month, but I took a break after having to return it after the red rings for the third time, and now I’ve been catching up since I got it back a few days ago. I have a feeling Home is going to step up the skill point concept, though, with 3D trophies in your own hall of fame, with cool graphics and images accompanying the virtual reward.

  • this is wrong

it runs at 1080p on ps3 search on google theres proof.
and Wayne dont go and call other people fanboys when you clearly are , i mean you wrote like a whole fu*kin page about a load of s**t, i mean who does that,

  • Wayne

@this is wrong: you are clearly either an idiot or illiterate.

You accuse me of writing a whole page of F*ucking sh*t, but by your comments that I am “clearly a fanboy” I can tell that you were too intellectually challenged to take in the information contained therein.

How can I possibly be a fanboy when I own (and am happy to own) the PS3, Wii, and Xbox 360, as well as the DS and PSP? Perhaps, in your infinite wisdom (yes that’s sarcasm) you might point out which system I am a fanboy of?

My defense of the Xbox has nothing to do with fanboyism, but was only in direct response to 2 comments on this forum that I strongly disagreed with. Had you read (or been able to read?) my post fully you will note that I took to defense of the PS3 and had a go at the authour of the piece in the process.

The length of my post comes from a desire to back up my arguments with facts, and to make my points clearly, something you were unable to do when you acused me of being a fanboy.

For all I may disagree with Chris’ perspective on things, at least he can f*cking read and write properly and make sense. I just don’t see why he had to turn this into another Xbox v PS3 argument, when there was no mention of a comparison between the two in the article

  • martin

    thanks for the comment chris,
yeh even tho i love halo blah blah, the press stunts were a bit over the top. i think they worked tho :)
im glad your ps3 runs quiter then the xbox.
and i didnt know about the ps3 trophie thing. trying to copy xbox?
im sure ps3 and xbox are both excellent in their own ways, just everyone has their own opinions.
and i cant wait for COD4 who cares if it runs at 1080 or 720, play and enjoi. i bet you couldnt even notice the difference anyway

  • Chris

    In turn, kudos to Martin

How about we stop the bickering and end on a good note?

  • Knut

    Martin,

Thank you for a well written rebuttal of both the article, and the various incensed posts written in response.

Nice to see a post which is both literate, and thought out. It’s a rarity these days.

    Regards,

    Knut

  • Knut

    I meant Wayne….wayne, not Martin. Sorry Wayne…

    Damnit

  • snut

the game only renders at 720p it is supposedly upscales the image to 1080 through software, but apparently this doesn’t work a lot of the time
